How many miles on your subaru?
The 89 loyale that I used to have was finaly sold at 280k when the original clutch went out. I probably could have gotten more miles out of the clutch but I was driving over white pass twice a day 4 days a week for the last year of its life. That car was purchased new by my inlaws, and was the best car they or I ever had. Mike

Front end CLUNK
On my 1990 loyale I have the same problem. Checked the ball joints and they had play, so I replaced the. I purchased an after market pair that were middle of the line price wise. And honestly I wont do it again they are crap. Any how, I still have the noise. I checked the strut tops to see if they were bad, nope. I checked the steering components, nope. I checked the wheel bearings and brake calliper, nope and nope. The subframe and engine mounts look good but I not sure what Im looking for. Ill watch this post for more ideas. Thanks guys Mike

3spd auto going away (5spd swap)
WOW:banana: thanks guys. But the work will now have to wait. I had found a parts car for 100.00 on cl. Spoke to the kid. I asked him if I could pick it up early in the morning, he said he had a doc. appt. so he asked me to show up a 1230. Agreed. I went and picked up a tow dolly and called him about 15 min from his house. The kid says "oh you didnt get my message? I sold it to a guy that came early this morning." Talk about pissing me off. Anyhow back to searching for a cheap parts car, times are tough and money is hard to come buy. THANKS FOR ALL OF THE INFO. I will be back to this thread many times when I find a car. Thanks again Mike

3spd auto going away (5spd swap)
Hi guys, I have a 1990 loyale, non turbo, with the 3at. Im buying a 1987 donor car with a 5spd dr to swap it out. Ive read through all of the posts that I can find. And just a couple of questions. It looks like I can install the clutch etc from under the car. Is it easier to pull the engine? I hope not:eek: Is there any parts that wont fit from this 1987? Will the axles in my car work in this D/R? Does anyone have any tips on removal and installation, especially of the tourque converter and install of the pressure plate, fly wheel and clutch? I have a manual and will be referensing that alot. LAST thing about how long should this take a mechanicaly inclined person to complete? Thanks guys Mike

Home Made Roof Rack
WIth that last pic I thought to myself, dang that looks familiar. Then as I read, a bunk bed frame! Ive got the exact bunkbed for the kids. And I am going to be taking out the lower bunk. Now I know what I can do with it. Thanks for the idea. Are you going to put any walls around it? Mike

Yes, Sorry 3 spd auto. Mike

Tired of my three speed, what is my best option
OK, So the three speed in my 1990 loyale is still working OK but the 4wd solenoid is still down. I have monkeyed with it for as long as I want to. The options are, at least the way I see it, do a 5spd dr tranny swap with pieces or buy a donor car and swap it that way. For pieces Im guessing that I need a new flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, tranny, rear drive shaft, clutch pedal and cable. Are they hydrolic? or mechanical clutches? What years can I choose from? Is there a price that I can expect to pay for the pieces. Alternately I could look for a complete non running car. Again what years can I select from. Im thinking that it would be easier to use a donnor car but more expensive perhaps. Monney is short having been on fulough from the RailRoad since January. Thanks for your opinions Mike

1990 Loyale 4WD not working!!!
Well, I used my wifes car as an anchor and no rear wheel movement. I still get a click from the solenoid, but that seems to be all. The tranny says it is full of fluid, everything else is working. So where do I get the part to replace it. And is it hard to replace. Thanks Mike

1990 Loyale 4WD not working!!!
Ok disregard my last post. So while I was dinking around with some other stuff under the car I noticed a much more solenoind looking thing on the passenger side of the tranny towards the very back. I traced the wires to a plug ect ect. When I unpluged it the light for 4wd went out on the dash. YEAH FOR ME!!. So without the ign on it is zero, with it on and 4wd off it is like .2 volts. When I push the button I get almost 10 or 12 volts or something. So then Im thinking that the solenoid is trashed. I plug it back in (still with the 4wd button on) and I hear a click:banana:. I push the button multiple time and it clicks each time. So when my wife gets back I will use here car for an anchor and see if the rear tires will turn/spin in our gravel. Ill post again when I find out. Thanks Mike

1990 Loyale 4WD not working!!!
I think I found the soleniod on the drivers side of the tranny and traced it back to a plug on the top of the tranny in the engine compartment. It has two wires, small gauge. And its wraped in a woven white colored sleve. Hopefully these are the correct wires. When I pulled the plug appart to test for voltage I got, zero with ign. off, about 3.7 volts with the ign. on but not running and the 4wd button off. Then when I pushed the 4wd button nothing changed. Still read 3.7 volts. Does the car need to be running to test it? If I pull the soleniod out how do I test it. Thanks again Mike

1990 Loyale 4WD not working!!!
Cool, So if I get under the car, is the solenoid easy to see? When I check for voltage, is it all or none for on and off. Or is there an acceptable voltage to make it work and an unacceptable voltage indicating a fried part? THanks again guys  Mike

1990 Loyale 4WD not working!!!
OK The idle is fine at this point, a little high around 95o rpms, but fine. And there is no diff. when I turn on the 4wd. I pulled one of the lines off of the vaccum can and the idle did turn to poo. It went back to normal when I pluged the line back in. Mike

1990 Loyale 4WD not working!!!
Txakura I dont see any large round flat disk on top of my tranny. There is a large diameter plastic vaccum(I think) line comming out of the top of the transmision, it has a little boot like a spark plug covering the connection to the transmision. I couldnt get the boot of to see what kind of connection it is. It might be the speedometer cable I suppose. There is vaccum at the vaccum modulator on the passenger side of the tranny. Is the small white plastic can on the passenger side fender for the 4wd system? What does it do. Can it get plugged? As far as the button is concerned, if it lights the dash up then does that mean the switch is good and the problem is "down stream" from there? At maybe a relay or something? When I push the button should I hear an audible click any where? When I did a search I found a contributor that has an article on the push button 4wd. So I pmed him to ask for the article. Maybe that will help when it gets here. Thanks guys Mike

Will 2 1/4 inch tube work for lift?
Will it cause me to need to lengthen the steering shaft?

The wheels are drilled!!!! and spare 235's
I just finished the toyota wheels project. Turned out great. As soon as I get some tires I will post picks. If any one needs a 235 75 LT 15 tire I have three that would make great spares. Still a ways to go before they get down the the tread wear indicators. They are a decent all terain from Costco. Only problem is that they are still on the rims. So if you want on(or all) you will have to wait until I get tires mounted on them. Then I will save the old ones for you. Free of charge. Also if any of you GURUS could look at my post in the subuaru teck older generation, regarding my 4wd not working:banghead: I would apreciate it. Mike

1990 Loyale 4WD not working!!!
My loyale has the three speed auto and I just noticed that the 4wd is not working. I tried searching for an hour or so and had no luck. So here is my post. My haynes manual has NOTHING in it about yhe 4wd system. What should I look for to fix or test or replace. The last time it worked was last weekend. Thanks Mike:confused:

Wheel drill help and missed you at Evans Creek
Even though I live in Carbonado, I wasnt able to head up to EC to meet anyone until Sunday morning. By the time we got up there it was like 11 and every one was gone:( Oh well, sorry we missed everyone. Next time Ill be there. Anyways, I want to redrill some toyota wheels and was wondering if anyone in Pierce County has an old hub I can use to pattern the holes. I would like to drill the hubs but I dont have the cash to buy the new lug nuts and bolts. Thanks guys. Mike

what do you keep your tools/gear in to prevent it from flying around?
They make all sizes. Im sure that you can find one that fits your needs. I will admit that the box causes me to carry more than I used to just because I have the space now. There are way nicer ones out there too. But I figure why spend the money on an expedition box:slobber:. Mike

what do you keep your tools/gear in to prevent it from flying around?
Heres how I do it. I have used this black plastic box in about 6 different rigs. If we take my brothers truck I just move the box over. You can get them almost anyplace, walmart, lowes and homedepot ect. Really cheap, like $30.00. I secure it in my wagon with a strap through the back seats' hold down hooks. In the summer I have two, two ton comalons, bolt cutters, axe, two tow straps, a couple of clevises, kneeling pad, extra jack, big hammer, 1 gallon of coolant, 2 quarts oil, atf fluid, gear oil, small tool box, lug wrench, big blue tarp, and some other small things, first aid kit, toilet paper ect. In the winter I add my small chain saw, a couple of wool blankets and a couple of heater meals. Everything fits nicely and stays out of site, quiet and relatively secure. If I am anyplace that there is a chance of flipping over, I put a good carabeener? through the lock hole to keep it closed if I flip. Here are some pics WHat do you think?

Got me a loyale!!!!
Cool, Where are you located? This is a great group of people. Very "all knowing". Just use the search or ask your questions and you will have your answers. Most stuff for the subarus of our generations needs to be hand made. I will be doing the 2 inch strut blocks here shortly. Also swapping in a Dual Range 5 spd when money is available. Ive been looking for wheels off of a Peugot, but know that I have seen how easy it is to drill the hubs to 6 lugs on 5.5 inches, I think I will do it that way instead. We use the car mostly as an overland car. Not for rock crawling or real off roading. So the two inches of suspension lift and some good 27 inch all terains will do me well. Take care and welcome aboard.
