Well, now the Idle wont go low enough for SMOG on the '78
I learned the glasses part the hard way...

Are EGR's, Vacume regulators, etc. sold new at stores for carbed EA motors or no?
Simple question, are the EGR's, Vacume regulators (like the one on the intake manifold, and on the distributor) sold new anywhere, or must I find replacment ones off of junkyard cars? More specificly, this is for an EA71. I have a couple replacements off of other cars for some of them, but they are not brand new of course... I think I could use some newer parts for the rebuild.

Thats not the problem, because if I did loosen it, it would still die, because it would not idle under like 1200rpms. Anyway, the Carb is Officially dismantled Its in all its pieces not, sans the throttle/choke shafts which I left on there. There was a HUGE crack in the thick gasket that sits between the throttle and carb, along with several cloged vacume spots in the regulator and some of the vacume shafts too... The throttle might have a vacume leak, its really loose and I dont think that is normal. There is a brass ring on the outside, and it looks like it should be tighter than it is. BTW, Who carries alot of the carb cleaner? (other than just the bottled kind, or is that the kind I am supposed to use?)

Awesome. Thats what I thought it was like.

Good stuff. I guess the crank main seal will require an engine rebuild?

I dont want to spend $100 on a full engine kit when I probalby wont use most of it. Just the oil pump gaskets would be fine, along with the carb gaskets, EGR gaskets, vacume regulator gaskets, and maybe the distributor gaskets. The EGR and distributor I would presume would be the same as some of the later model gaskets, but I dont know for sure.

Too late, its all dismantled :-p I took off the carb, EGR, vacume regulator, and the other vacume thingy on the intake manifold. The EGR looks totally cloged, part of the throttle looks clogged too. The center gasket definatly needs replacing on the carb. I found a couple more problems too The distrubutor looks like its leaking oil from underneeth where it sits on the block. There is another Oil leak behind the crank pulley, im not sure if its the one where the oil pump is or behind the crank though. And I have a frayed wire on the wiring harness right bellow the middle of the Radiator...

If it doesnt involve welding or wiring, I can do it. Dont worry about that part. I have plenty of time right now too, in fact ill probably go start working on it now.

I got the timing gun, ive fiddled with the idle/mixture screws a million times, but I havent cleaned out the carb... Is that via just with a can of carb cleaner, or taking it off and soaking it?

Anyone run an aftermarket Tachometer on a carbed EA?
Nah, I want something nice and small

Thats it? Neat.

Anyone run an aftermarket Tachometer on a carbed EA?
I think I want to get just an aftermarket tach for my '78, I dont like not having one, its annoying. Hard to tune it well too. Suggestions? I already have an autometer screw on gauge mount for a 50mm gauge...

Title says it all, I got the other problems seemingly all fixed, got the timing right, but the car just will not idle under 1200rpms... BAH! Im pissed... At least I have a month and a half. Time to rebuild the carb?

Will dual port 1400 heads bolt onto a EA71?
When you browse 8 forums in the course of an hour, you tend to have to take shortcuts :-p

Tips on passing SMOG? (78 wagon, with issues)
Ok, ill keep an eye out for you too. BTW, the 78 is running well, but it is having a bit of an issue trying to get it to idle. If you turn it on and leave it, it will die, but if you give it alot of gas, it will return to idle and idle fine and run fine. Ideas?

Tips on passing SMOG? (78 wagon, with issues)
Ok, I got it running with the help of my uncle. Turns out that the bolt that you adjust the distributor for was striped... Causing the timing to go funky. So basically just bad timing, kept getting worse due to it moving around. I just removed the old radiator that was spewing water, got the new one ready to go in So basically, all I have left to do is just install the radiator and take it to the smog station! Not to mention get a timing light

Tips on passing SMOG? (78 wagon, with issues)
:-\ I bought this car to learn how to do this stuff, the only reason I'm asking for options is because of the whole smog deadline. Otherwise, I would be spending more of my spare time, which is not limited as you suggest, doing this all myself. I have no interest in supporting vendors, I dont make enough money to support them anyway, which is another reason I do everything I possibly can myself.

As far as I can tell, the 1400 carb is nearly identicle but it doesnt have that crazy vacume regulator. The other EA71 newer carbs I saw wouldnt work because they were set up almost completely different, it would have required basically taking everything in the engine bay minus the block to run it.

I got the temp registration extended through til the end of august, so that gives me some time to get this done...

Really? Thats cool. I could use another opinion of what might be wrong. I have someone else coming up next week to check it out.

I'm sure the price is reasonable, but my smog deadline is like 2 weeks and $200 is alot for me right now. Im still wondering if anyone has had a simular experience with this problem and can give me a more precise solution.
