So, how bad does this engine look to you?
EA71, MY78 4WD 4-speed Wear doesnt look bad, and the buildup seems quite cleanable. I was just wondering if it was indicative of any sort of possible issue with the motor, but then again I guess these pushrod motors do run a bit crummy

I just today pulled the motor off of the 78. Needed to do it to get the heads off so I can take them to a machine shop to get the stupid broken bolts removed. Anyway, took some pics, lots of crud everywhere... How bad would you guys say it is? http://community.webshots.com/photo/166896604/171703146PyfTiT http://community.webshots.com/photo/166896604/171703775NeuAfc http://community.webshots.com/photo/166896604/171703684heMuUr

Ruh roh... broken intake manifold bolts... (ea71)
Well I just removed the engine BY HAND in order to get the heads off... Definatly difficult, but its done. Next up, taking the heads to a machine shop...

Ruh roh... broken intake manifold bolts... (ea71)
bump, even less success today. Every drill bit, even the super sharp dremel tools, are no longer making any sort of work on the bolts... Not only that, the stupid exaust recirculation thing is stuck on the heads too... Im about to shoot myself in the head...

Ruh roh... broken intake manifold bolts... (ea71)
I would have to pay to have any welding done. What kind of drill bits should I be looking for? Carbide, titanium, etc.? BTW, I just finished the Carb/Intake manifold rebuild. Now, I need those bolts out, then lift up the engine to do the oil pan gasket, along with the valve cover gaskets and oil pump gaskets... Stupid bolts, I would be done this week if it wasnt for them!!!

Did anyone ever try dual webers?
Just a thought... I dont think they would fit, but hey, its an idea... Dual 32/36 DGV's... probably too much carb, but it would be neat...

Throttle body/carb spacer gasket?
I got it figured out. I cut a little channel around the crack location with a dremel, then filled it with epoxy and ground it flat. Basically sealing the crack

I'm about ready to give up... If this thing didnt have stupid coolant running through it, I would just use some metal screws or something to hold the intake manifold on...

ARG! The easy out method has yet to work... Already snaped on easy out with just a wrench, and now I need to find a metal drill bit that can actually drill steel... ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

bump, im screwed without this thing...

Throttle body/carb spacer gasket?
Well, ive got like everything going for rebuilding the carb on my 78, but aparently the gasket kit I got did not come with the throttle body space gasket! (the thick one that goes between the throttle and carb, between 2 other gaskets) The one that was on the carb is cracked, so I definatly need to replace it... Any one know who has them?

I tried out the cut + use a screwdriver method... Still no go Ill get a blowtorch ASAP

Would You Pay $550 for a pair of GEN 1 Fiberglass Fenders?
That $250 he mentioned for a set sounds much better... My wagon could use fenders, and a front bumper piece.

Ruh roh... broken intake manifold bolts... (ea71)
I really didnt think it would be a problem, because the first long bolt on the end came right out... I put hardly any pressure on the bolts before they sheered. After seeing them with the manifold off, its easy to see they would have sheered no matter what because of the rust.

Ruh roh... broken intake manifold bolts... (ea71)
I already have some cloth on the ports I knew that one... Ill go take a look for that EZ out tool, thanks for the info!

Ruh roh... broken intake manifold bolts... (ea71)
Ill probably have to drill them out considering what state they are in... (ill take a pic tommorow) with basically only a couple of threads sticking above the head, with only one or two with enough left to get a grip on to try to get them out... I'll probably ruin the heads too if I try and drill them out...

Ruh roh... broken intake manifold bolts... (ea71)
Well, I went to take off the intake manifold today so I could start working on replacing some of the gaskets for the old wagons motor... And sure enough, as I was removing the bolts on the intake manifold, one of them sheered right off.... Its in the head darn good. By the time I was done, 4 of the 6 were sheered, all the short ones I guess I shouldnt have decided to replace those gaskets, I really didnt need to they were holding up Now, what in gods name can I do about it?!

www.allsubparts.com Reputable/Reliable?
Just curious, I havent seen anyone refer to the site http://www.allsubaruparts.com on here yet... Anyway, ive been looking all over for gaskets/etc for my 78 and so far this looks like the most comprehensive site for it, along with KEM manufacturing. Anyone have any experience with that site/vendor/company?

Help on exhaust parts
The RS guys dont even run over 2.25" on their cars, larger diameter pipes just kills torque. 3" is what WRX's use!!! (for a turbo motor, less backpressure after the turbo = better, you want that air to go out as easily as possible for the most power) I would stick with 2" at most for EA motors.

Help on exhaust parts
Anyone have any pics of their custom exhausts? I'm going to have to do the same thing, replace the whole exhaust (headers are leaky, along with the rest of the exhaust... Its an EA71) Whats the diameter of the exhaust ports from the heads? I was thinking run that size to a Y pipe through to 2" piping with a resonator and a magnaflow 2" straight through muffler out to 2" piping maybe even without a tip... My car doesnt come with a Cat stock, so I dont have to have one, save myself some money, but it might help with emissions...

Well, now the Idle wont go low enough for SMOG on the '78
Its the "Berryman chem dip", blue/red/white logo, same as the carb cleaner can.
-
Well, now the Idle wont go low enough for SMOG on the '78
Worked just fine. Actually, it worked better on the throttle section than the canned carb cleaner did.
-
Well, now the Idle wont go low enough for SMOG on the '78
Actually, the roo-builder kit is under $20 I also discovered today a parts-dip carb cleaner container! Man, that was a waste of spray cans when I could have used that...

Well I spent like an hour at Maita Subaru trying to see what parts still existed for the car in terms of gaskets... I managed to get the EGR gasket, oil pump gasket kit, and the valve cover gaskets. However, all of the carb gaskets are discontinued, or at least not in the US Cant even get the nice cork gasket for the carb like everyone says to get. I'm emailing Roo-builders right now about getting a gasket kit. Ive seen a couple other odds n ends web sites that carry kits it looks like, but im not sure whats in them (doesnt say).
