The cops are too buzy seeing how many jelly donuts they can stuff into their mouths, and by looking at the size of most of our cops, thats a lot of donuts.

Greetings from Alaska Our #2 98 OBW has been used in Prudhoe Bay ( North Slope) for many years as a car for my helicopter pilots to us. It gets down to 60 below or colder all winter. Our EJ25 DOHC motor will start as long as it has CLEAN OIL (10W) A Sears Diehard GOLD battery ( the biggest one that will fit in the car ) and you MUST take it inside at nite to keep it warm. Starter only last a couple of months but we get the NAPA starter with the lifetime warranty and carry a spare with us. And their easy to change. At 60 below the brake drag something terible after you apply them and the antilock brake system will become VERY slow at pulsing. At 60 below, if you turn on the wipers on,(front or rear) the wiper gearbox will tear itself apart. Just try to roll a window down and it bends the up and down arms in the door. We leave this subaru running all day long. DON'T leave the heater on high cause it will cold soak the motor. the motor can't/won't get warm. (the temp gauge won't even move.) This will cause the exhaust system to freeze solid. also your gas mileage goes down to about 12 mpg. P.S. at 60 below, DON'T SLAM THE DOORS. And the door lock and unlock system horn will just make a scratchy noise. other then that, their great cars !!!

Get a good set of Titanian studded Goodyear Ultragrip winter tires, put 350 pounds in the back and they will go anywhere. Subaru's everywhere up here in Alaska. Welcome onboard. LOTs of good info and GREAT people here. We put a switch on our subarus (98 OBW-09 WRX) to turn off the antilock brake system, in case you need to stop in a hurry on wet ice.

You kniked one of the composite gear when you were changing the HG. seen this before. MOST IMPORTANT :: did the values hit the pistons. Replace all four gears and check ALL the other idlers, water pump belt contact point. MAKE sure the crank gear reluctor arms are not bent. that is if the values are not bent from piston contact. good luck !!! if you have to pull the motor apart then use the new redesigned head gaskets. subaru # 11044AA610A they take care of the HG problem. These gasket came out from Subaru 3/09 search for my last post about these new style HG's. AAA theshop Subaru repair designed them over 3 years ago, and they fix the HG failure problem. our Alaska 98 OBW has had a set of them for 2 1/2 years ago. This new Head Gasket you are talking about were designed by Kurt Alder owner of AAA theshop Subaru repair (Anchorage, Alaska) a three years ago and Subaru started to sell a copy of Kurts redesigned head gasket. All the Subaru taxi cabs up north have been using them for the last couple of years with no problems, some taxi's with over 350K on them. the "sealing ring" around the piston hole has been moved in. One thing you MUST do is set the values, when you are using the new gaskets. Subaru started selling these gaskets 3/09 Subaru # 11044AA610A 101mm .045" MLS Gasket (Head) DOHC 16V 6* They work. Have them on our # 2 Alaskan 98 OBW.

Subaru has copied the head gasket that was designed by Kirt at AAA theshop subaru repair years ago. These HG should fix the problems that the EJ25 DOHC has. SUBARU's number is #11044AA610A these HG's are 101mm 045" MSL gaskets for the DOHC 16V EJ25 Not only does Kirt tell me but the owner of the Yellow cab fleet (they have LOTS of Subie cab's) These HG seam to fix the HG issues. LOTS of subie cabs in Anchorage. They are one of the best sellers cars in ALASKA. If you use these newly designed gaskets then you MUST set the value clearance !!!!!!!!! Need a GOOD feeler gauge and Micrometer and remember that these are in MM. I have done six (6) HG jobs using these new style gaskets and have had no problems. DON"T relie of the subie parts person for help (info) as I have found most of them are CLUELESS. Thanks KIRT.

Alaska Highway #11 Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay was built in the 70's (450 miles) My subie has driven this road several times. Their uses to be only one gas stop at Coldfoot 1/2 way their. look up the north slope haul road and Coldfoot. great road trip. JUST PULL OVER FOR ALL TRUCKS !!!! This road has pot holes bigger and deeper then a Ford F-350 dully. Hit one of these pot holes at 60 and your car or truck will turn to JUNK. bottoms out and tears the whole front suspenion and exhaust and other parts OFF your rig. Must be about 50 cars, trucks (big and small) at the Yukon river crossing. 1998 OBW EJ25 DOHC Automatic. 245 K on the speedo. Keep the rotor RPM up Alaskan2 minus -12 below tonight

Redwood City, CA to Pruehoe Bay (north Slope) Alaska 3820 miles 4 days. 1998 EJ25 DOHC OBW time to fly my companys A-Star helicopter back to San Jose airport 2 days

1998 OBW EJ25 Automatic Alaska driving Chevron Reg. 25 MPG on our last trip from Anchorage to La Conner in the middle of winter 2458 miles outside temp was minus -62 below for 3 days the gas mileage went down to 15.8 MPG. NOTE : Driving your subie at -60 below. 1. DON'T turn on the wipers. destroys the wiper gear box 2. Don't even think of rolling down the windows 3. Don't leave the heater blower on high while parked. It will cold soak the motor 4. If you leave your car running at night, the condensation coming out of the exhaust will will build up from the ground and within a couple of hours will build up and chock off the exhaust pipe. We used the engine (PT-6) cover off our twin otter and drove the whole front of the car into it. That worked GREAT. 5. Be carefull about how much you use the brakes as they take 10 seconds for them to release ( we learned that for ice racing up north that if you dry ice and pack the antilock brake unit it slowes down the pulsing to about one pulse every 2 second ) This is GREAT as you can run full throttle in the curves. This trick alone will make your OBW smoke the WRX.s in the corners. Haven't found a subie yet that will outrun our Outback on the ice. We beat the WRX'x by 8 to 12 second on the one mile curved ice track. This really pisses off the big buck racers. We don't open our hood while anybody is around. GOODYEAR Ultra grip tititaum studded tires help too. 6. Arctic winter gear !!!!!! We are tying to put together a winter race from Seattle to Prudhoe Bay Alaska. our group of 8 has already done this in the summer, now we want to do a winter run. 6.

you would be pissed too. this 1969 Barracuda HEMI coupe was one of 12 sold/built by Grand Spalding dodge, I bought it NEW for $3999 including shipping to Alaska and I still have it. In Alaska we take care of car thiefs ourself and we don't call the police cause they will be out of jail before you get your wheels out of inpound. Im the nicest person you could meet, as long as your not a car thief !!!!!! I would do the same thing to somebody I caught stealing your car too. Jail doesn't stop car thiefs. Hopefully the shovel did.

In Alaska, if your car is stolen, you call the taxi cab co's. The cops up here don't care about a car thief unless its their own car. Offer a cabbie $100 dollars and they will all be looking for your car. A cabbie found my 1969 barracuda in less then 4 hours. The dumb F--k who took my car was in the hospital for 5 weeks cause he didn't see the shovel that hit him in the back of his head. three times. And I keep his shove too. good luck finding your car.

Just a quick note: Has anybody heard of a bad head gasket on a EJ25 DOHC fixing itself.

The only HG that I have heard works (subie cab owners and many EJ25 owners) are the ones made specially for AAA theshop subaru service in Anchorage, Alaska. All the subie taxi cabs in Alaska us them. Many of them with over 300K miles with no problems on them. And their are a LOT of subie cabs up here. I talked to a subie cab owner with 475K 0n his 98 EJ25 with these gaskets. He said his whole fleet of cab have them and haven't had a HG problem on any of them. Look up AAA theshop in Anchorage. Ask for Kirt (the owner)

where is this run thats on the 6th of Dec starting at & where is it going ? 2 below in Anchorage this morning and heading to LaConner next week. Anchorage to LaConner is just a 2348 mile trip with Canada gas prices at a little over $5.00 per U.S. gallon. My subie gets around 26 MPG on USA Chevron gas and only 21 of the Canada gas. mileage droped to 16 MPG when it got down to 50 below on last years trip. Subaru's are the number one selling car in Alaska. Subie taxi cabs EVERYWHERE up here. Put a set of studded tire on them and they will go anywhere. Hope this storm that is blowing into Washington isn't too bad on ya. Ralph

Greetings from LaConner.. 1998 subaru outback wagon EJ25 DOHC with 245K on my second set of head gaskets, and second engine. the last motor, a CCR's engine that I was told wasn't going to knock (35K and sounded like a diesel) or blow head gaskets (117K and internal leak) and wasn't overheated. they told me "" our engines don't have a head gasket problem "" I will never have anything good to say about these people again. AAA 'theshop' Subaru in Anchorage has special gasket made just for them that don't fail. All the Subie Taxi's up north use them without a problem. many have over 300k with no problems. Hopefully Kirts (AAA theshops) head gasket are the answer to this Subaru problem. Something Subaru of America and CCR subie engine don't want to talk about. Anyway, im getting real good at R & R subie engines and head gaskets. My outback has 14 round trips on the AlCan Highway and 3 Rt on the North Slope haul road.
