want to put an ej18 in my ea81 BRAT, HELP!!!
i need to know all the ins and outs, electrical, mounting points, tranny, and where to BUY the actual good, low mileage ej18 to throw in my car. PLEASE INFORM??? and i dont need to hear about how ej22 has more power. i dont need THAT muchpower. double my stock power is ENOUGH thank you. can i use my original ea81 transmission? the d/r 4spd? or i would gladly source a d/r 5spd. may as well improve thetrans at the same time as the engine. i m in the renton, wa area. i ordered and paid for a nice full gasket set on EBAY for my ea81. never showed up. bunch of BS.

BRAT Meet 2011 - Leavenworth
DANG my luck. last year i was all readyto go. my brat was stuttering, seemd an felt like a major problem. turned out the rear fuel filter was full of crud. fixed that in less than 5 minutes and 5 dollars. This year, my bra was running decent, smooth and reliable at least, not much power though. so i got ambitious and removed the ea81 <200,800miles>. with the intent of cleaning out crud, new gaskets, shave heads for compression, and markjw generously offered some spi pistons, so even ore compression. and i had recently bought the magnaflow cat conv/ Y-pipe replacement for my rusting factory exhaust. even brand new, the exhaust obvioulsy was built with a lot of pinches. for anyone interested, it made a DEFINITE difference, power and a nicer sound. otherwise, my only upgrade was the weber. long story short, i cleaned the heads and block and everything, inside an out, spotlessly clean. i ordered the only full gasket set i could find. <not many ea81 gasket sets available, btw.> estimatedshipping time, 12 days. today it is about 40 days later, yea, FORTY days later. no gaskets. and the wost part is, this years brat meet is much closer to me. i am not far from north bend. any tips on where t get gaskets? mayb someone near me ca help with a quick reassembly? i have plenty of cash, at least by brat budget standards, not mercedes standards, but hey, I WOULD honstly rather drive a brat even if i owned microsoft or boeing.

cant get my damn camshaft out of ea81!!!
please help, SOOOOOMEBODY!! lol...... i have it all apart, was cruising right along, smooth as butter. got the oil pan off, the intake off, the heads off, distributor, timing cover, and oil pump all off. now i cant figure out how the camshaft comes out. i could probably just monkey with it til something happens, but im kinda shy about being too aggresive. i m accustomed to iron muscle car engines. this is the first import engine ive ever worked on so deeply, and the first cast aluminum engine, and the first boxer engine. i READ the "ultimate subaru shop manual thingy". didnt have any luck. can somebody explain, in CLEAR detail, the next step? im just trying to replace my pistons and my camshaft. also what is the deal with my camshaft? do i gotta replace my bearings ANYTIME i replace my camshaft? and where can i get a good FULL SE of gaskets? <head, intake, front timing cover, etc....>

Where do i get good port/valve work done?
p.s how do the ea82 spfi pistons compare to the ea71 pistons? dont the ea71 pistons have the same effect on compression? i see ea71 pistons on ebay ALL the time, they are very common. i have never seen ea82 spfi pistons for sale. please advise???? also, thank you for taking time to give me advice.

Where do i get good port/valve work done?
maple valley, washington. yea i had intended to just shave the deck like .02" wouldnt that have the same effect as the longer pistons? what kind of cam would you recommend for mostly highway and city miles? from what i gather, there are just 2 ea81 cams from delta. a low rpm torque and a high rpm horsepower cam. do they affect gas mileage? i dont mind doing the porting, should only be like 3 hundred cash. for a basic street port job. not sure about the injection. one of the main reasons i bought a brat in the first place was for simplicity and i have a survivalist mentality. i need at least one reliable vehicle that i can fix or McGyver in case of zombie apocolypse or world war 3. or just a Red Dawn thing. since we cant depend on patrick swayze saving us these days. i never understood the benefit of a single point throttle body injection, over the basic carburetor. is single point injection REALLY any better than a carb? yea i know a late 90s and newer MPFI system is superior in performance and fuel efficiency. but even a brand new system is all computers and circuits and plastic. my impression of fuel injection on a rough and ready, git er' dun kinda truck, is that by the time fuel injection technology was developed enough to be worth the trouble, it had become TOO developed to work on for me and neighbor jim bob and lil joe down the street. am i wrong>? maybe i am. i am always open to others opinions. keep in mind my mechanical skills are limited and basic. im not a limp pansy yuppie that needs to take my truck to the shop anytime i need an oil change or spark plugs. i grew up taking care of that stuff with my hands, callouses and dirty fingernails, etc.... but i rebuilt my first generation, 1967 850cfm quadrajet a few years back, and it BARELY got done. it was REALLY testing my mental abilities. big and heavy and dirty, okay i got it done. small and precise and ten thousand tiny parts, no thanks.

Where do i get good port/valve work done?
i just want my ea81 cleaned up and smoothed out, get the intake matched to the heads, the weber matched to intake, the heads matched to exhaust..... i figure i can do all the bowl work myself. who does a good multi angle valve seat? at least 3 angle. which brings up a good question. are the ea81 seats 3 angle originally?> or just 2 angle? it doesnt need to be a fancy shop. i know there are guys on here that do great work right in their garage. just be aware i am on a budget here, i am not a microsoft executive. my brat is stock, i just have the weber conversion and a magnaflow catalytic converter setup. also, i know im throwing 5 hundred questions in one thread, but kiss my butt,,,, does anyone know of a good mandrel bender i can hire? thanks ahead of time!! p.s. ive said it before and im sayin it again, i am a good/decent mig welder with all my own gear. if anyone on here needs help, let me know, i wont chew you a new rear hole, people on here have been real generous towards me, id like to pass that friendliness on.

i came by in my gold brat about 11:30 today. knocked on man door of garage. didnt know if it was cool to knock at the house so i just took off. so i am looking for maybe an even hundred horsepower. mostly aiming for midrange. no racing, no hardcore rock crawling. just a stock brat with a little improvement here and there. i really like the brat. i can see myself keeping it my whole life, so i just want it to be solid and reliable. been thinking of diamond plate over my rocker panels. would look cool and beefy. i just wonder if it would promote rust. i dont have much rust. been lucky in that regard. i want to do the 5-spd dual range conversion. rear bumper. side sliders. i have the push bar/skid plate and need to install it all. but yea.... maybe u should throw me your cell number so i can call before i just drop by. i felt like i was trespassing, felt kinda guilty bein there, lol....

oh WEIRD dude..... i just mapquested your address. my sister and family owned the house at the end of your road, the one thats empty and trashed now. at the powerlines/tracks. your next door neighbor is hella cute, man, i dont know where she lives now, but she works at the matket i grew up next to. sarah. VERY pretty brunette, short girl... small world i guess. that is really awesome that you have such a rural property. that elk run area went to ************, in a very yuppy way, in the last ten years. i already knew, but when you look at it from overhead on mapquest, its even more of a harsh reality. damn crackerbox development neighborhoods..... my place looks like yours. OLD maple valley. real maple valley. so where are you from, you implied in your post that you moved from somewhere else. hope i didnt step on any sore toes?? but i still stand by my opinion about the new neighborhoods.... sorry,,,,, let me know when you want to meet up, if you do. im a good welder, i do mig, and gas, but im learning tig and will be certified in a month or two.

MAPLE VALLEY!! 83 brat. im down in the deep valley, right off hwy 169. close to cedar grove road, same side as the tavern. im down to make new friends, especially friends who love real cars and working on them. sick and tired of all these prissy bastards with brand new f350s who never haul more than a latte grande. ive got a few different rigs. but im a BIG BELIEVER IN "only two reasons to drive a big truck". 1. you need to actually HAUL things. 2. you are insecure and want total strangers to think you are a big hard man. anyhow, pardon that rant.... heh.... yea, i am down to meet up and bull************ at least once. if we get along we can be neighborhood buddies. i get a lot of free time in november cuz the weather sucks. well, it was super nice for 2 days. record temp highs < 74 f >. just PM me on here. p.s. not to sound like a user, but is there any chance of your new best friend using your car lift for a few hours? LMAO:lol:

Northwest folks.
i am a welder, i can make some nice seat mounts for you. plus i am only like twelve minutes from the near end of north bend. i have material also. and it will look and perform at least as good as the oem mounts. maybe better. but i dont want cash. i just want a fellow sooby owner to help me with my brat. scratch my back. i like to bypass the CASH aspect of business whenever possible. horse trading is more honorable, in my eyes. i dont need many parts, mostly just another set of hands. i DO have some 390mm pug wheels that need restoration, sanding and painting. let me know dude. i can weld it up quick. maybe an hour. maybe 2 hours, maybe forty minutes. the only thing slowing me down on work is i need to cut material with a blade. i dont own a plasma cutter. im workin on it though so we will see how that goes.

Northwest folks.
i think the southwest king county <renton, auburn, maple valley, black diamond, etc etc> guys should meet up one day. i know there is a brat meet. i am talking less official, just a small casual whatever thing. we can do it at my place, my firepit is piled high for a killer bonfire. or whatever. maybe cheeseburgers or beers at a lake? a mud run in the woods? you tell me.

one peice drive shaft on a GL?
excuse me if this is a dumb question with an obvious answer, but WHAT is the benefit of a single piece driveshaft? is that just for less rotational losses? less reciprocating weight? unsprung weight? please explain it to me, i will accept being laughed at cuz as i write this, i already get the feeling the answer is day 1 logic.

creeping up there.....
just for the record, its NOT a crime to drive less than a thousand miles each week. people all over the world walk and ride bikes or buses when it is convenient. i LOVE my brat and classic cars in general. so dont get me wrong or think im a tree hugger car-hater. but damn, why is it that so many people are shocked when someone only drives ten or even eight thousand miles in 12 months? i got my 09 tacoma prerunner 5-1-09 and just last weekend <march 21-2010> broke 6 thousand miles. its OKAY to spend time OUT of your car once in awhile. i garden, weld, hike, bike, kayak, make sweet sweet love to women, lol.... cars are awesome, especially cars that a real guy like all of us can work on without G.M.s budget and equipment and bill gates computer knowledge. carbs are COOL when they work. im just saying.... enjoy ALL of life, you know, not JUST cars. life is great. doesnt take internal combustion to enjoy that. especially for americans. even with all the crooked politics in recent years, americans still have it made in the general scheme of things. so appreciate it and dont take it for granted, you dummies.... LOL...... ok, ill step of the soap box now. sorry for the rant.

contact at american racing re: 4X140 rims
id be interested if i can get some 15x6. for my offroad brat, 1982. the old turbine style rims are nice. i dont exactly know the names of many rim styles, but i know american racong makes those ansen sprints, they would look great i think, and also be very durable. i actually already own some 17x8s from american racing for my 67 riviera. they are great rims. if i could get some 14x6 or 15x6, id love to grab em up. does anyone know how well a 195-60-15 fits a brat on 15x6?
