For what its worth the car still drives fine (straight too), but is definetly bent.
-
What was that bump?
-
So yesterday I bent a few lift blocks: Both sides are equally bent, but the rest of the x-member bolts/blocks are still ok. The round bumper sucked up most of the hit, although that long 19mm bolt is prolly bent too. You can pretty much watch it happen in this video. As far as I can tell, this foward most rear lift block is pretty much useless, can I remove the block/steel plate and just run a bolt through the round bumper part? Hopefully the body threads aren't too hosed.... Also, it seems I might be able to cut the round part down 1/2" or so [for clearance], and stick a slightly shorter bolt in there. I dunno exactly how the bumper works, but it seems that the inner steel cylinder [inside the bumper] is connected to the rest of the bumper via ribs running the length of the piece, if I cut it down, the cyclinder should still "float" [be attached] in the bumber ok, right? Anyone else tried this? Anyway, removing the foward block is my biggest concern. I notice the EA81's, while similar, don't have this sort of thing ahead of the crossmember. Which makes me think i can pull it. Here's another pic, the stuff I wanna remove is red, the place I wanna cut is blue.

Up. Down. Went for another local run today along with Wasteland Subaru and his brat. Video is by Dustyrider - his hatch is getting some work so it stayed home. We've got more pics which will get posted soon I'm sure. I've also got a couple q's for the lifted guys (dealing w/ bent stuff) but I've gotta go to work so that'll hafta wait. -
Not yet, I've been pretty tied up with skool & work. Soon though. Thanks.

We can go out to the 18rd OHV area and run the dunes. I've hada hankerin' to do that. Or bring your bike, this car eats up all my time and I don't get to ride enough! Lemme know if your coming down.

Same here, since there 14s they're 3 or 4 bucks cheaper. The kids [mounting the tires] at wall-mart didn't know what a Peugot was, I think the lion on the center caps threw them a little bit - they thought I was putting a/t tires on a Ferrari or something. The service manager knew what a pug was, but still didn't understand why I wanted these tires.... until he helped me load um into the roo. It all clicked, and he got this big grin on his face....
-
They may be bigger than 27", that's just what the calculator said. $45 @ Walmart!!! Yeah, it was no big deal. I can still BARELY do 70 on the highway, too.

Thanks! 225/70/14, so like 26.5-27 ish. They're real friggin wide, though. Gearing was good, some sections are REAL steep, the Roo just chugged up it. It did stall halfway up a big scary rock move, and lit up the clutch getting going again. But that was my fault really; more gas initially and I would been fine. The roo did everything with ease, only scraped bottom a lil bit (again, my fault) although I've seen Jeeps rolled up there. These cars are friggin incredible! I also passed a lifted jeep on 33"s on the way out (he was slow) and he gave me the big . Cool! Right, he'd be off chasin' wabbits when I needed him.

So it finally stopped raining here in arid western CO, so I got to take the Roo on it's first real test. Since I don't even have a spare yet, I took it a little easy (read: throttled up all the big lines) and only went in a mile or so and back. The pics are from when the trail was tame such that I could trust the P-brake and get out. Or I could even open my doors for that matter... so this is the easy stuff. Everythings is from the Tabaguache Trail, about 2 miles from my apartment. Most of the dirt is from driving around in a flash flood on Sunday, on a sandy trail. This trail turns to glue when it gets wet, so I hadta wait for some sun. The dog drives good: First three-wheel! First time a Subaru's been up here!

I have a GMC 2500 Van with 312,000 on it. (Second engine, third tranny ) I bought my 88 GL with 182k 11 months ago and it has 203k now. Gimmie a couple years, I'll get 400k no problem.

Southwest meet, anyone?

I've got an extra diff, and was planning on doing this anyhow. I'd say Poison Spider is my goal at this time; If I can reach the Portal I'll be pretty satisfied. I don't think a locked diff will be needed for that.... But I don't know, I haven't tried. After all, my wagon's only been lifted for 2 days! If you guys wanna do harder trails, I'll prolly bust out the bike and come along to watch. I *know* my car isn't equipped for Cliff Hanger or the like. -
This is likely to get some mixed responses

I had a 75 Honda CB360 [moto] with dual carbs. It was pretty horrible to work on. -

Is an LSD acceptable? What trails are you thinking of? -

Monitor & Merimac, Gemini Bridges and all the Natty Park routes are available, and should be no problem for a stock roo. -

Well, I'll be happy to follow then. I only sorta know the Hells Revenge route, mostly from were it crosses the bike route. During Jeep Safari, I go out there (on the bike) to watch the carnage and bum beers. And show up the Jeepers sans engine. Whaddya mean? The White Rim is dirt road! If your buggy isn't registered I guess they might make a fuss, but it gets plenty of trafffic otherwise. I've seen ATV's and unregistered motos out there. The tour companies run 15 passanger vans around it! True dat. I'll bring my Banshee [mt. bike] in case we need a tow. -

Yeah, that first slickrock chute after the river rock switchbacks could be tough. The "wedge" has a bypass, and the stairs outa the sandpit should be doable. My biggest worry is the steep car-length ramp off the "parking lot". (not the real lot, but the flast spot halfway up were the jeepers congretgate) I think the wagon will lawn-dart bumper first into the sand coming off it. I'm not aware of a bypass there... The slickrock out by the arch is a little hairy (off camber/steep) but the low COG will prolly make it easy. Also, there's those half-buried fins, but I think we could angle through um. Could test similar terrain on Klondike without driving way out to the middle of nowhere. Out to the viewpoint on Porky Rim would be fun but short. It'd be worth it just for the photo op. Cliff? I guess everthing looks doable on the bike, I've never noticed anything too big (that doesn't have bypass). Kens-> Golf course is the only way I've done this trail. Slightly more downhill that way. Mmmmmm multiple desert water crossings.... Back of Behind -> Pritchett arch would be good too. Although I'm not going down that canyon on four wheels. Hells revenge sounds a bit daunting, but Finn & Things would definetly be a good trial run though. You ever been on Little Canyon Rim? I think Mirror Gulch is Subieable. Could explore Gold Bar a bit from there. Putting a Subie up on top of the Lion's Back fin would be the coolest thing ever.... as longs as you don't lose yer brakes coming down like that Blazer did a few years ago.... I also wanna do some multiday runs into the Needles/Maze. Not hard wheelin' but it's difficult to get back there by bike, as you can't carry enough water without a trailer. Also very boring riding by bike. (Scenery makes up for it) Sheet, just driving around the Whiterim will be cool. -
It's working fine now with the boot and plastic off. I guess I'll be trimming more than just fenders. Everything is working, included 4x. I didn't try 5th, but I get the feeling that I won't ever use that gear again [with big tires]

I live 1.5 hours from Moab - I'm down there riding my bike all the time, and I'm looking forward to running *some* of those trails with the Wagon. If there's a group going down there, I'm in. My rommie and his Hatch will prolly come too. I lived in the Mobe for year, so I know the place pretty well. I think Posion Spider would be a good subie trail, or maybe Flatpass (Steel Bender). It'll be interesting to drive trails I know so well from the bike. Of course, on the bike I'm going MUCH faster and jumping offa stuff... And then's there's all the trails that not even the motos can ride. Rooinater: What trails have you done out there? Have you gotten into Pritchett or anything of the sort? Also, does a welded diff blow up axles on slick rock? This was a consideration for me in going LSD.
