FI Conversion~ Kinda quick question
I was reading through the Conversion manual and it all looks pretty good and straight forward...ran into one thing in there that has me at a slight concern. I tried seraching but didn't really come up with anything...It states that you should get the computer from the same type transmission donor car as yours..but could be converted with a few wires if needed. Well I'm going to use the whole system from a 2wd Automatic 88 DL on to my Carb'd 4wd 5spd 86 GL.. So any idea on what I would need to do to convert the computer or do I need to get one from a 4wd stick...??? :-\

Clutch noise
bad throw out bearing? Do you hear any noises when it's not in gear and the clutch is out?

Gas usage :)
Wow geez that's like my truck when I take it 4 wheeling..fill up both tanks, use one to get there/back, use other to 4 wheel (which usally takes the whole extra 14 gallon tank). But it's proof you had fun!! (expensive fun these days)

low idle - coughs and dies
Guessing it's a Carb'd EA82 so the fuel filter would be near the rear passenger side tire...up and under there near all the gas tank fuel lines... If it's FI then it's the big metal can up on the driver's side strut tower. If you haven't changed it in awhile, then it's always worth a changing out anyways.

Colorado meet?
Wife, Daughter, Roo the Dog, and myself Bringing dip, chips, and suppose we will bring some plates also Right now it's a toss up of what Sube we will be bringing. The pugs should show up tomorrow, which means I could get the tires mounted and bring "Project Cheap" so I can compare with KBD's wagon (maybe make sure we both have the front strut mounts correct, still not positive I do). But it's still carb'd and running like hell (have only put around 30-40 miles on it since it was sitting for 3 years). Soo....might just be in the RX again..I know you've all seen the RX before but it's still my baby. Unless anyone needs parts off the DL which might require the Legacy wagon. So will be in a lifted white sedan, a white RX, or a blue Legacy wagon.

ER27TT Engine Color Scheme HELP!
Yea it was painted black stock with paint that was flaking off everywhere, so I cleaned it up and then repainted it, only very lightly over the cooling fins though. Was slightly worried about it affecting the cooling properities of the IC, but I figured it was painted before..and every single radiator I have ever bought was painted too. Edit: here is a fairly new picture I found on my computer, only a few things have been modified since then (intake shielded off and a few other things like being in the car).

ER27TT Engine Color Scheme HELP!
It's actually "Cast Iron" High Temp paint, my camera doesn't quite get the color right. Figured if I painted it cast iron it would be a solid engine right? I painted everything before putting it together, masking off anything I didn't want painted..hose connections, electrical connections, gasket surfaces etc. It also matches good with my aluminum ceramic painted turbo and down-pipe. But yea some people like it, some people don't, just depends on what your going for. I went for kinda dark and simple, will show less oil leak messes once it starts leaking oil..and we all know it has to eventually.

ER27TT Engine Color Scheme HELP!
Here is what I did with my JDM before sticking it in last year, it's still holding up just fine and looks almost as good as what it did then, except better now that it has been intercooled etc..

Guess I'm one of the only people who go and hang out at Colorado Auto Parts huh? Starting to become a rip off over the years but still go there and almost always find what I'm looking for. At any point in time there is at least 15-30 Subes there, and they still let you in for free to go look around. Just crowded as heck.

AA lift install finished minus steering adapter
Haha yep been a week since I got mine done, still wearing several band-aids and still have a huge black & blue lump/bruise on my forearm from where I bashed it against the tranny mount trying to get the bolts broken loose. Well worth all the pain though...looks good Torxxx!

finally-- fixed at last
Car almost looks brand new, looks like you did one heck of a job getting it back together. Can't tell it was ever crashed.

Project Cheap:Build Lifted 86' GL Sedan Advice + Build
Thanks Dusty, we appreciate the compliments. Both my wife and I love the sedans and that's why we choose it. I did have some pugs lined up, but my dog Roo had an emergency that took my Pug money...so might have to wait until next payday. Also have a set of yota rims lined up for free that I might just drill until I get the Pugs. That would allow me to take the Pugs to get cleaned up and powder coated down the street from me. Will see how things work out, sucks to already have my tires and no wheels!!!!

Welcome a-board! And your right there is a LOT more than just 3 Coloradans registered on the board. In fact the guy who basically runs this board lives here in Colorado. I can think of quite a few of us right off the top of my head. If your interested we are having another meet coming up here next weekend. See this thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42401

Colorado meet?
Chances are it will be the wife, daughter, me, and Roo the dog...taking a vacation the week before so might just show up in "Project Cheap". We will bring some veggie burgers and maybe some chicken to BBQ up (no red meat for the wife & daughter). Will see if I can't talk the wife into making her famous 7 layer dip, and we will bring some chips etc too for the dip. Anyting else that's needed just let me know.

Project Cheap:Build Lifted 86' GL Sedan Advice + Build
Good to know, thought I was going Krazy! LOL Even the wife was making fun of me for taking it apart 6 times and putting it back together only to have it cocked the other way. Camber has straightened out, still a slight amount, but what I would expect until I crank the front struts back down. Why 2 electric fans you say? Well I live in Colorado, climb 10k feet mountains with little to no air, and keeping a Subaru engine cool is a good key to keeping it alive for a long time. Don't get me wrong your right, with a brand new two row radiator and no mechanical fan it hasn't gotten above 1/3rd the way up. Of course I haven't put the big tires on it yet, haven't packed it full of the family and dog, and camping junk yet and tried to drive it up to 10k feet yet. Ever since I owned my first turbo Roo, extra cooling has always been my thing.

Project Cheap:Build Lifted 86' GL Sedan Advice + Build
"Project Cheap" has no A/C, so I can say no to that question. But if it did I'm sure that sensor your talking about would be completely in the way but.... The EA81 electric fans are extremely slim (like about 1" to 1.5") and smaller diameter and work great. Should fit in there with little to no trouble. I run two of them on my RX, one to replace the mechanical, one on my intercooler. Project cheap will be getting one in place of the mechanical one. So am I the only one with the weird cocked steering wheel when the wheels are straight problem????? Also moved my pitch stopper toward the passenger compartment a tad and redrilled a hole for it in the mount on the engine (left the original hole on the body alone). Works perfectly just a tad tight with the bolt for it.

Project Cheap:Build Lifted 86' GL Sedan Advice + Build
Okay lift did indeed get done today, also got a brand new 2 core radiator put in. Seems to have an ever so slight camber issue, maybe I did get my front strut extensions wrong, but it's very slight and has been barely been driven, less than 2 miles so far. Have some problems with steering wheel alignment, no skid plate (got to get that fixed asap), no more mechanical fan (EA81 electric will replace it), pitch stop being too short, and still got to crank down the front strut adjustment a tad too. Now I need wheels BAD so I can get my tires mounted. Grille still off since I'm going to pull the smashed bumper off...might put a spare RX grille I have in it's place anyways. Plus planning on putting my spare RX wing on the trunk with some mods. Yep it's going to look funky but that's what I'm aiming for. Next big project is to pull the engine for a re-seal, clutch, and EFI swap from the DL. Here's some finished lift pictures, looks good (minus the dinky tires/wheels): Right after I finished it and the radiator: Wife taking it for it's first drive: A good comparsion look with the Roo's in my driveway: Woot! At least a project or two out of the way on "Project Cheap". More to come.

Got mine completely finished today, looks like I might have been wrong and have an ever so slight camber issue on the front. Really not bad though, maybe the few miles I drove it didn't get it to settle enough. Everything went beautifully after I disconnect the torsion bars. Only have a few problems... 1.My steering wheel doesn't line up at all anymore, cocked like 30-45 degrees when the wheels are straight? I tried putting it on a few different ways and always ended up with the same thing...am I missing something or is that just how it's going to be? 2.Pitch Stopper is just too short now 3.No more skid plate at all....oil pump/filter is right there for a smacking (gotta fix that) 4.No more mechanical fan, will have to pick up an EA81 Electric to run in it's place. Will be more pictures in the "Project Cheap" thread after I go take a really long shower and have at least one beer...then I will post them. Got 3 thumbs up just driving it around my neighborhood for a few minutes.

AA stuff+Liberators=issues
Yep same exact size I'm going to run also...but think I'm going to run them on toyota 6 lug rims if I can find some that should help with backspacing and rubbing hopefully.

Project Cheap:Build Lifted 86' GL Sedan Advice + Build
Well it finally got it's real start today... Started putting on the lift, got the rear totally done, and the front strut mounts done, but still got aways to go and some fighting with the tranny blocks and whatever else wants to make my life hard. Liking the results looks big, just wish I had some wheels/hubs to put on it tomorrow when the lift is finished (hopefully). Have a set of some brand new 235/75 15" Bronco M/T's that I got for pretty much nothing sitting at brother's shop waiting for my wheel/hub decision. Here's a couple of update pics: From this afternoon after I got the rear done in like less than an hour, Woot look at the height of the rear even with stock wheels/tires: From tonight when I got sick of the dark and fighting with the tranny blocks, sitting there half taken apart no radiator, grille, engine and tranny sitting on jacks and stands, same with the body. Kinda sad looking: More to come tomorrow, unless I get really lazy.

Must be work on your lift day...I too started lifting "Project Cheap" today. Didn't have awhole lot of time before it got dark, but probably put in about 4 somewhat lazy hours (no air tools). The rear is totally done, front strut mounts done (Mine were marked correctly, and only seemed to want to go in one way). So far everything has been fairly straight forward and bolted up. Only problem I have ran into is that the tranny blocks are extremely hard to get lined up. So far have only gotten 2 bolts into one, 3rd isn't lining up..and took me at least an hour and half just to get that far on the tranny mounts alone.. That's where I stopped for the night, hopefully with a fresh start tomorrow I can get it finished fairly quickly. Will be some pics in the "Project Cheap" thread.

WTH? Suddenly idling at 1700rpms...
Yea I was thinking either that or the coolant temp sensor, waiting for it to cool all the way down (I.E tomorrow morning) and see if it still kicks the idle up for cold start, since that's usally about where it keeps it at (1700-1800 rpms) on the first start of a cooler day. But getting all the Roo masters advice and guesses before I go at it in the morning so I have more to check out, so keep em coming. Luckily I have extras of both, and alot more...thought for sure it would have thrown a code, hopefully it will on me tomorrow at least that's one of my day's off. Though I was going to start putting the lift on "Project Cheap" which is prob why the RX decided to do this....

WTH? Suddenly idling at 1700rpms...
Driving home from work tonight, I get off the highway and come to a stop at a light....look down and the RX is idling at 1700 rpms??? Still running great as usual, vacuum still at -18 like it always has been at idle, checked for vacuum leaks/disconnects anyways..nothing. Throttle cable isn't too tight at all, and throttle plate stop screw is right where it has always been. Couldn't find anything else, loose wires, bad connections, etc...So I turned the idle screw till it backed off to 900 (I know it hadn't moved since it was still painted in place). Computer isn't throwing any codes, and timing is still dead on and running great... Any ideas? Something going bad or gone bad that would cause that? Or just chaulk it up to the gremlins that live in my Subaru's, maybe it's ticked off I bought 2 more in the last few months.

Colorado meet?
Bummer Shawn... Don't think I'll have the GL done enough to drive it there even though it's like 10mins. But have alot to do to it and not nearly enough time or cash. So chances are it will be the Fam in the RX again...unless someone needs some parts from me then it will be the wife's legacy. Have some spare EA82T parts laying around, A full 1988 2wd DL sedan (will be taking the full injection system off of it, radiator + some other parts, this is my old DL that a few of you saw at an 04' meet) if anyone needs anything off of that. Also Looking for some 15" Pugs if anyone has a source or some laying around. Parts by request only and gotta give me decent notice if it's off the DL so I can make time to pull it (car is still fully together and running).
