96 2.2 in 2.5 hole
just installing a 96 2.2 into a 96 outback 2.5 seems to fitt better than the original moter very few differances in the manifoilds and wire harness plugs right in bitt of diff no egr on 2.2 will sort that out i dont find mutch power differance and the reliability is way better a used 2.2 goes for 800$ and a headgasket job on a 2.5 go's for 2000$ + it just makes sense to put the 2.2 in theese cars should have came with it in first place have put 2.2 s from 89-97 into theese outbacks some things are different on eraly engines but the interchangeabily is very good have no unhappy customers with thiss convertion even the 2.2 with the twin cam heads works good gets rid of that weak 2.5 small rod journal engine witch has realy weak rod berrings that are phisicaly to small for applacation

Rear Crossmember Bolts
ivans imports replied to fishy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXif you can axses directly above the head of bolt inside the car and use a small hole saw make a hole above the bolt and come down from above with a good socket to hold the top side or cut them off and put a new bolt with a nut the welded nuts shoudent be to hard to break loose

Hopefully someone will have an idea. I'm out of them.
the preshure regulators like to get rusted up internaly and dont work that well also sounds like mabee one tooth off on disstibutor or vacume leak might be different mas airflow sensor turbo to non also check the wire conector on water temp sensor is bad for geting damaged and cotrols most of your cold warmup make sure that the two diagnostic conectors are disconected unless seting timing theese conectors when conected will keep the engine at 0 timing when pluged in

propane injection in a soob?
we are running a ej2.5 turbo on propane simpifyed the wire harnes down to crank sensor cam senser ig mod and knock senser thats it it runs a mixer of a chevy v8 work very good no problems and seems to make more power have run a deul feul setup on a ez3.0 turbo six cly worked good but had to use a very large mixer of 440 dodge to get enuff feul that moter had no rpm limit reved to 8500 rpms was crazy powerfull and flick aswitch and propane is off and runs on gas the only differance was the propane had no rev limit and i think it supplyed more feul than gas could but was very reliabble and resanabley safe mind you we brke two pistons but they are very week pistons in that engine

Can you determine pulley condition by spinning?
ivans imports replied to uniberp's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi change the water pump timimg belt and coged idler all as a set evry time i do anything with timing belt the coged idler do'es real time and sees way more miles than any others and fails evry day have had two engines just thiss week bent 16 valves because of this idler no ej moter is amune to thiss even if you just change it and nothing else have had them failed under 100000kms had a 07 with 78000kms bad coged idler this part is an engine killer the other pullys are smooth so the belt could slip across if seized and whould give warning the coged one seizes and rips the teeth of the belt

bad axle nuts
have had ishues with aftermarket axle nuts having to big of outside diamiter and not tightening up proper theese nuts are about 5\16 bigger and look like some kind of mazda or honda junk they fit but do not titen up properly on hub after about 2000kms the axle works loose and damages the inside of the hub as it gets loose in berring [warnig do not install theese nuts if its not the same as what came off dont use it will save some big problems] have had 4 or more thiss year mostly rebiuld axles

ivans imports replied to njdrsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXall twin cam but most jdm used hydrolic lifters but still interferance the 96 2.5 used the same valve train if heads are wreaked hydroic to hydrolic solid to solid you can tell if it has a valve addjustment spec on under hood sticker or not

engine boring
i did it and looks good a bitt thin around the barrel but will work for race engine now we plane the bugger down a bitt and get a short stroke 2.3 out of it or phase two rods and make a stroker 2.5 out of it i will biuld it and run it very hard c if it fails
-
head gaskets
one more note the valves on the engine i just did where very tight had to open up the clearance a bitt seem to like the exhaust a bitt loose 0.25 mm exhaust and 0.15 mm intakes but all valves had to be reset its nice to be able to take heads off plane them and reinstall with no down time will try and get vidio of head planer in action for thiss thread its interesting to c how bad some heads are and blocks i c more warp and low spots on blocks than heads last block took 3 thow to clean up and barrels where definaty lower than rest of block by about 1-2 thow

Whats your gas mileage with what mods?
race buggy got 14 kms on five gallons at 6500 rpms 2.5 single cam turbo atoumatic with two gears 1rst and 2nd couldent get over a 100 and keep it under control
-
Unacceptably poor fuel mileage. (cliffs at bottom)
check the fuel fillter out if it gets pluged a bitt it make the pump run at higher presshure and it will get bad milage idling around because it runs to high of preshure low rpms and not enuff on high rpms makes the milage suck
-
head gaskets
dont worry today is headgasket job # 5 thiss week all day evry day doing a 04 with 120000km when i planed the head could see the low spot on the # 4 and #3 holes on bottom corers i took pics of evry pass with planer you can realy see the problem spots on the first 3 passes total of about 2 thow to clean up whould have never worked unless planed and yes if its not a brown seal pitch it in the dirt and i use avinic form a gasket coating on evry head gasket
-
