  1. thanks a ton, that is some great info. it would seem that characters 8-10 are used as identifiers for the vehicle and dont really affect the trans at all. the important characters are 1-7. as long as those 7 are the same a swap should work out just fine. that was indeed a typo, couldnt read the parts guy's writing.
  2. hate to ressurect such an old thread but there is some good info here. i could use some help deciphering these trans numbers: here is the part # for the 95 impreza 4eat: 31000AC770 here is the trans # for the 95 impreza 4eat TZ102ZA3BA P#for 95 legacy trans: 31000AC580 Trans#for 95 legacy trans: TZ102ZAAAA
  3. think i found a good transmission, it is from a 95 impreza sedan. according to the VIN from my legacy and this impreza both have a 4.11 final drive ratio. however, the trans # and the part number for each are different. what is different between them? here is the part # for the impreza 4eat: 31000AC770 here is the trans # for the impreza 4eat TZ102ZA313A P#for legacy trans: 31000AC580 Trans#for legacy trans: TZ102ZAAAA my mechaninc and i think it should work and from what you all are saying here it should work, but i want to get some more info before i pull the trigger and buy the thing. thanks!
  4. yep. you will be hard pressed to find an older subaru that isnt rusted there.
  5. my 95 legacy wagon has 280,000 miles on it and is running pretty good. it is a rust bucket now but it still gets us around. the engine is fine. oh and the loose shifter is more than likely a bad/or missing centering spring that costs a couple bucks and 5 minutes of your time to replace.
  6. isnt that bad to do long term? like more than a drive to the mechanic to get it fixed? this thing has 280,000 miles on it so i am not too worried. if i am going to replace the trans i guess i shouldnt be too worried about damaging it.
  7. that is what i thought. thanks. i hate driving the legacy right now since it binds and shudders so bad during cornering.
  8. do i need to make sure each gear ratio is the same or just the final?
  9. i have a line on a 4EAT from a 95 impreza locally that i want to put in my 95 legacy wagon. figured i would ask in this thread again rather than start a new one for every trans i find. i decided that the trans out of the 93 might me more trouble than it is worth. what with the "manual" button and the "power" mode wiring and all. if the impreza and the legacy rear ends are both 4.11:1 it should be a direct swap otherwise i need to source a 95 impreza rear end. or am i way off base?
  10. the tcm has a differnt part number than others out there. i think it is because the 93 has the display on the dash for what gear you are in soit may have a different wiring harness. but i am sure that can be worked around. the plan is to possibly put my ej22t and 5mt out of my 94 legacy SS into the 93 impreza wagon.
  11. might buy a old 93 impreza wagon for a daily driver with a 4EAT in it that is pretty good. i am wondering if later on down the road when i do a swap to 5MT in the impreza will the 4EAT from the impreza work in my 95 legacy wagon? i would assume that the best way to ensure everythign works would be to take the whoe driveline from the diff the torque converter and use the impreza TCM. one question i have is will the impreza TCM and my legacy ECU communicate with each other? thanks.
  12. both cars are ej22 powered. what about the starter? does that matter? dont the imprezas have diffterent starters than the legacy?
  13. both cars are AWD and OBDII. the 4EAT in my 95 Legacy wagon has 276,000 miles on it and it is VERY tired. have a line on a 4EAT from a 98 Impreza L sedan. will the impreza trans. work in my legacy? thanks.
  14. if this is a front wheel drive car you can put whatever the heck you want on the back. you could put a brand new one back there if you wanted.
  15. subaru makes the lever long so you dont have to reach as far to shift. the STi lever does have a shorter throw. aside from the lever length issues the Kartboy shifter bushings would probably work the best for you. they will make it feel awesome and save you a lot of time and money.
  16. this is pretty common from what i understand. just bend it away and everything should be fine. someone changing a tire could have used it as a jacking point. to the uneducated eye it looks like it should be one.
  17. drove a impreza with the STi short shifter and it felt awesome it was very solid. the benefit isnt as much in the shorter throws as much as it is in how it feels.
  18. i used to carry a spare cap and rotor in my glove box when i had my old 85 wagon. that was such a pain. i also learned the hard way to swap the plug wires one at a time.
  19. yep. we need more info. is the mechanic that the car was purchased from a subaru mechanic?
  20. did you check with the dealership to see if your car was covered by the recall?
  21. i put a new one on every time. 2 dollars a year on crush washers isn't going to break the bank.
  22. glad you had fun out there at the rally. i have crewed a few times too and it is always a lot of fun. i cant wait to get out there some more.
