  1. If you feel like giving it a shot, it's incredibly easy to get off of a donor, especially if both front wheels are off...four 12mm bolts with a ratchet, a little jiggling, and you got one. and it appears to bolt right on to the EA82 sedan/wagon family, and you can add a rear sway bar to your wagon by removing the rear sway off of the xt plus the control arms... I'm more curious about the steering rack, as I damaged mine after jumping my wagon for the last time, and need a replacement.. I'm pretty sure the front xt sway bar will bolt on, and improve handling. prolly do the rear sway bar while im at it.
  2. I have a loyale that also has the ticking/clacking noise and I think that 15w40 or 10w40 works the best, though I havn't tried anything heavier. I actually switch brands of the oil-additive stuff, using a quart at each change, and they all seem to work pretty well.
  3. "The red EA82 wagon is a friend of Johns (160HP or so )," Uhhh...how'd he do that?
  4. This is funny...only because I just recently saved an RX from the junkyard, before it hit the rows...It was sitting behind the main office at PickNPull, and I had the guy run the tagsd, and when it came up clean, I bought the sucker right there for $500, then the engine on my wagon blew a headgasket, and me being a broke joke, had to trade the RX for an overhaul of the heads and $200.. oh well..but the moral of the story, is that RallyRuss now has it andd is beating it up at rally cross', so that gives me great subie karma, saving an RX from the junkyard
  5. I was at the j/y pulling an oil pan off of an XT today, (i bent engine X-member and guessed where the rear nuts were..) and I noticed that the XT steering rack is a bit bulkier than the rack on my Loyale, which I think needs replacing... 1. Is the XT steering rack: A. compatible with my 4wd Loyale wagon B. any more sturdy/strong/superior? and also the bonus question for today folks: 2. Is it worth it to swap in the obviously thicker XT front sway bar, especially since I have heavier wheels...?
  6. good chit mang. That's quite a feat, pulling a whole assembly on the solo. How long did it take you?
  7. that a household dishwashing glove over the disty, with the spark wires running through four of the fingers, then use very tight zipties on the fingers (wires), and then zip tie and silicone the base of the disty, and Voila!! Ghetto Fabricus!!
  8. design a housing that can accept more rugged struts, if possible (rancho, etc)
  9. ..no binding of rear axels with open diff on concrete? Would an LSD swap be neccesary?
  10. you should call RAM Performance in Idaho...lok up their website..he's an EA81 guru mostly for airplane stuff, but he makes NEW cams, for not that much more (I think $150 or $170) and he can make em to match your ideal powerband..
  11. you can find it by searching "subaru police" on google's image search..there's actually a bunch oif hits, including a WRX cop, a legacy cop, an ea-81, and a wagon (i think)...pretty cool
  12. I was showing that pic of the ea-81 cop car to my lady, cuz she didn't believe it, then we ran into the even more rediculous pic of mickey driving the 360!! I guess by the story on the website, it was a New Zealand parking enforcement vehicle, and this guy that worked for the gov. went around restoring all the old cars used by the cty, 'cept he decided the restore it as a cop car! Gotta say, I would stomp the gas if I saw that thing pulling me over!!
  13. my stepdad's giving me my first car back: a silver '80 wagon 4x4 1600 that has like almost 300k on the clock now. (I gave it back to him after I thought it was on its last legs at 250k, and bought my loyale.. ) Now i have a project car yay!! any way, my best score was my recent rear brake swipe from a turbo sedan, with real nice rotors, brand new pads, and good calipers...then I swiped the brand new remmanned rear axel, both for $50.
  14. Being that I live 10 minutes from one of California's most prominent ORV parks, I had an itch yesterday to put my Loyale to the test. It's only mods are rear discs and 15" pugs with grippy rally style tires, but damn it did very well! Paid four bucks at the gate, and they gave me directions to an back roads entrance to the "Upper Ranch" Off-road trail area...It was amazing to say the least. There are countless trails, all rated from green circle bunny trails to triple-black Diamond "Tank Stopper" trails. Then, there is the off-road park, where countless obstacles are set up such as bogs, rock crawler courses, log-courses, mud pits, puddles of all sizes, hill climbs etc... Very diverse terrain to say the least. When we got in there, i took a few looks at some of the trails and didnt think I could get through some of the due to extreme clearance issues. After I got warmed up, and realized what the potential of this car is in this terrain, I was amazed at what it could articulate. Mucho leglifters and diff-dragging, but it did great. would have been even cooler if rain had touched down any time recently. Then suddenly, as my nonsensibility meter inflated as did my ego, I charged off of a huge ridge, caught a good four feet of air, and then nose-dived right into the skidplate and oil pan the tail end whipped up, slammed down, bottoming out, and then bounded into the air again!! my buddy was laughing his rump roast off when he realized that I wasn't hurt. I was thinking how lucky i was that the oil pan didnt split right there! time for PnP... http://photos8.msn.com/imageserver/image.aspx?Image=HcZNnT9kkUh6!cx8ceVWZnvKU3RK0ivFR5MImARk93*GQNb!iL75fHuiWBKHotWc!ooCgRI*BlUAlM9WqzwHHm9fLt48l3J*Xy4Czx1toUQRRUf6Ew*D0Rmra4UevK3gx*3fbACNqB9SWyC!gcrsCQ$$ thers the pic link
  15. haven't been for a few months, but when i did, there was a lot mopre than what yu said...bunch of legacys, some complete, one with a turb motor and trans... well, Ill definately be checkin it out..
  16. thanks for the heads up...Brian..you should come check out the Moss Landing Pick-n-pull north of monterey. There's some good chit mang. might pull an ea-81 engine and a d/r 4 or 5sp. hope fully a rear diff. dood, thats where i found a cherry rx for $500. let me know if you wanna roll down.
  17. i would suggest more frequent rotation of tires to compensate for offset differences
  18. MY starter went kaput at the same time I blew a head gasket!! The starter did the same clicking, but no turning (i think) this also used to happen on my mom's Rabbit... What happens is the electrical contacts inside the starter become corroded or simply do not touch. for a quick fix, try smacking it nice and hard while someone cranks it..worked for us, eh russ?
  19. An interesting thread this has become. I think a bit too much emphasis is put on a couple measly inches ; to each his own I say, as a good driver in a stock sube can spank the hell out of a crappy driver in a lifted f150. The difference between the 4" and 6" lifts are that one has been extensively used and tested by many on opposite sides of the world practically, and the other is a custom fab job that depends on the individual building it. As for me personally, I trust a 4" lift does the trick as the hatch patrol has more than adequately proven, but it still doesn't quite provide the "look" of an off-road beast that I am looking for, plus I'm after larger tires than a pk can accomate. Practically speaking the pk's are the way to go, but practicality isn't what everyone's after. Soobme: check out the Little Mule, that one is 6" and is in the Subarubicon thread along side mudrat's 12" lift.
  20. I was totally kidding about the hatch tractor...i know you couldnt do that. But the guy who makes them says they go in, someway or another... look at http://hometown.aol.com/jsgyro/jsgyros.htm e-mail him and he'll tell ya how it works
  21. yeah, I meant engine foward, not back.... as far as clutch goes, I pretty much figured one would have to stick with a 3sp AT if they wanted to reap the benefits of using a reduction like this... wow a tractor huh? Be pretty funny to be driving down the highway, and look into a cut cornfield, to see someone's hatch discing a field!!! Seriously though, I just threw this out there because I saw a few people on the board fantasize about something like this, and I happened to stumble across someone who actually makes em... they are availabe for EA81 and Ej22's.. So whose gonna build the next rock crawler??!!!!
  22. unfortunatley, even in that monster of a junkyard, they dont have any gen1 subes..sadly enough, Im convinced they crush em without giving em a chance on the rows...:boohoo: But they have plenty of gen2 (Ea81) and up..(lots of EJ's!!!) There's a '76 wag in great shape at the yard up in Grass Valley, CA, I'm sure my stepdad could snag somethin' if you needed it... This particular yard is actually 6 or 7 yards in one big emporium! PicknPull's the biggest.. this one's off highway 1 in Moss LAnding, which is s. of santa cruz, but north of monterey....on dolan road
