  1. I thought i got the radio right. The OE readio actually hadtwo connectors where the new OE (weatherband!) had the one. There were two light leads and the new one had one. 50/50 chance, oh well. Still need to put 100 miles on him to make sure the CVT works properply and the carb is good. I think he shall just be called Justy.
  2. Ah yes i should review 1989 SUbaru Justy 2wd CVT parked for 5 years or more.30,000 original miles
  3. He is now (almost) legal. Just needs an exhaust system and inspection. Bugs to fix: Cant seem to make the auto arm of the alarm to work. Oddly when I turn on the lights the (new gen) subaru stereo lights go out Mount inside rear view mirror Put tools away that are in the car. I even ordered him a EZ pass.
  4. This is an OBDI so i will defer to anyone else on this one, BUT it can be either one or two sensors, or even three (gauge engeine temp for puter and rad fan switch). I will let someone else answer. It is possible the ECU is the issue, BUT lets rule out an external short first otherwise you may damage an ECU.
  5. Hg leak yes possibly, but not one to jump to major conclusions here without a few more answers.
  6. Either get a used alt or have your properly rebuilt at a shop. Lifetime rebuilts are great except for when you are on your 3rd, broke down someplace in the rain. It gets old fast.
  7. First thing to do is wash the engine top and bottomm. Next lest change the PCV valves. What brand gasket did you use? Did you change the spark plug bucket seals?
  8. You have a short someplace. What happens if you unplug the engine coolant sensor (for the gauge). Can be a cooling fan relay stuck. Could be a few things.
  9. I get that THUD on my 97 I have learned to ignore it.
  10. That's fair for a dealership price. Thats what i have paid in the past from deaers and ind shops in NY give or take 50.00
  11. More frequent oil changes then recomended (every 5K will do and easy math). If the car ever over heats, change the oil. Change the PCV valve every 2 years (I do it once a year) That should do it
  12. 2.2 the way to go. A nice external oil cooler and filter to ad capacity, a air filter made to deal with dust is where I would start.
  13. I think the only air cooled car I ever saw without "flaps" was a chevy corvair. I always thought they were sort of cool.
  14. i mentioned it before. Using a pair of pliers and gloves, remove one plug wire at a time. If it is a bad rod, when you get to the affected cylinder, the noise will change (or go away). This is a very standard diagnostic test.
  15. I can tell from expeirience that a subaru 2.5 with a rod through the side of the block will not only start but will also continue to move a car (up hill to a safe exit ramp no less). The ringing sound is not a connecting rod. I am going with flexplate or flexplate plus rod, but someone PLEASE put us out of misery and do an autopsy already The rod test is so easy someone do it.
  16. Flushes are fine, either by repeated drain and fills or power flush, just make sure no chemicals are used.
  17. You would be surprised how many engines have plastic intakes now.
  18. http://www.leftlanenews.com/subaru-impreza-hatchback-review.html I would buy one. The new ones are the same size as Blu, thats scary
  19. ALl it is is just a solenoid that pushes against a tab on the throttle plate. Almost any car with a carb has one. They can also be called a high idle solenoid. Some are vac operated, some electrical. http://books.google.com/books?id=kGz6HC6w98YC&lpg=PA399&ots=7pQAkTvhq3&dq=idle%20kicker%20solenoid&pg=PA399#v=onepage&q=idle%20kicker%20solenoid&f=false http://www.auto-parts-online.com/products/idle-stop-fuel-cut-off-a-c-kicker-solenoid-es4026235.html They go by various names, high idle solenoid, throttle kicker, idle stop, AC solenoid.... Cheap american unit overbuilt may work well from a junkyard.

  21. OK now i am completly confused. If it was 2wd it wouldnt have a driveshaft to clunk or vibrate.
  22. SUbaru transmissions rarely go bad, usually it is torque bind that may do them in. I would just leave things be and maintain the tranny doing a drain/fill every other oil change. Blu has 300987 miles on his and after a sensor issue is going strong.
