  1. I'll check the MAF and the TPS... I'm running without timing covers, belts are tight... didn't know the tach would jump with a MAF issue? Mainly hear about coil/distributor/alternator/wiring... Aw man, I can't use the WD-40?
  2. The XT windshield isn't all that special.... Took two days to order mine, and it was around $200 installed, and that was with them coming to my apartment complex to do it.
  3. I have an '87 XT, MPFI non-turbo. I took it out for a drive last night (did quite well for about 15 miles) and then upon trying to get back on the highway from the gas station, the tach started violently jumping, the check engine light was intermittently coming on/turning off (flickering, i suppose), and finally died. In a parking lot, thank goodness. So I have it sitting, let it sit a while... sometimes it would start, sometimes not. If it did, it would kill itself within a few seconds. If I managed to rev it up when it started, it sounded like terrible misfiring/popping and the check engine light would flicker.. then it would just die. I tried checking the codes from the ECU, all it's giving me is 6 (or 66?) but nothing else. I checked the distributor shaft, its tight with no play. Checked the rotor, the screw is in and it's turning, so ruled out the timing belt. Took off the plate on the distributor to check for moisture; there is none. Checked the wiring in the general coil/distributor area, all is tight without corrosion from what I can tell. I'm going to get the battery charged up again and take another swing at fixing the car. Any ideas? Alternator? Wiring? Ignore my thread?
  4. Make absolutely sure it's not your fusible links... Check continuity on those as well, sometimes they can snap but not look like it
  5. Every 3 seconds? Are the green diagnostic connectors plugged into each other? Disconnect them if so...
  6. Wow, nice wagon!! Love it out there in Carlsbad; spent many nights sleeping in my Brat alongside the beach! Where exactly will you be heading for your desert trip? Nothing more "desert" than out this way! I don't have a cool 4WD wagon like that, but I DO have a cool 2WD XT
  7. I'm with the fox on this one... Check continuity on the cable, maybe?
  8. Dang it, I don't like resurrecting old threads.... but I can NOT figure out if EA82 oil pans interchange.... There's a SPFI wagon at the junkyard that has a good oil pan, and my XT NA MPFI has a terribly dented one... Just have to make SURE they are the same. Thanks!
  9. You could put an automatic in it, easy to tap into vacuum for the modulator... that, and either use your radiator or an external cooler for the cooler lines from the tranny. Also, you would have to swap crossmembers. There are a couple other things you have to do also, just not exactly sure on what they are... Not many people would swap a manual for an automatic... It's not always the governor that goes bad... It's easy enough to take out, but I'd also check the pan, at least drain a little fluid. And if the modulator quits, be prepared to get pulled over
  10. A Weber should pass the sniffer without a problem, and they're easily adjusted... I can do it and I don't know anything about carburetors. But... go ahead and have fun with that Hitachi
  11. I don't see why a Weber would make you fail an inspection, unless you were in California. If I were you (and you know for sure it's legally allowed) I'd go for a Weber, those Hitachi's are a pain
  12. Agreed with everything said so far... I personally would get everything OEM except for the head gaskets.
  13. Wow, if I am taking this in right, $2500 for an RX with the EJ22 swap included in the price? Awesome find!
  14. I put a new clutch in my N/A 2WD XT. Moved the motor forward. Got a LOT of room to do everything necessary. I'll never drop the transmission again!
  15. WOW that thing is nice! I've always wanted an N/A GL-10. Betcha throwing a Weberized EA82 (or EA81) in it wouldn't be too much trouble... If my MPFI EA82 blows in my XT, that's probably what I'll end up doing.
  16. I'm going to search around, but I figured I'd ask just in case. Is it possible to get a 2-row radiator for my NA XT? If so, any idea on which one? I understand a single-row radiator works just fine, but I'd like the added "insurance" as I live in NW Arizona (125 degree summers) Going to probably toss the manual fan as well, and install another EA82 electric fan.
  17. I can get a set of 13's for around $200-$220 installed, and I'm in the middle of nowhere Arizona. Want a challenge, find some 12 inch tires
  18. I don't have a turbo, thank goodness. I'll go check out that site.. mine may actually be alright, gonna try flushing first.
  19. You're right on the money. I've had the t-stat yanked for a while now, and the temp gauge still goes up to about halfway. I bought a new radiator cap with the lever on it; I'm still getting practically zero pressure. However, the radiator actually gets warm now, it's not cold like it was before. I can't feel any cold spots, anyhow. EVERY Subaru I've bought needed a new radiator, now I just need to figure out exactly which one to get! I always end up getting the wrong radiator two or three times before I finally find the right one
  20. Yeah, it hurts like hell! I managed to do it twice in a row Is the exhaust in good shape? I get a "thump-thump-thump" noise starting up my non-turbo XT, my exhaust isn't in good shape :-\ anyhow, something to check into, for what it's worth. I'm not that good with turbo models, however I do know that the sensors can go out of whack slightly, causing issues and still not throw a Check Engine light. It would be a good idea to grab the FSM off the forum (wherever it is) get a multimeter and test all of the sensors, while cleaning the connectors at the same time.
  21. I like Metallica a whole lot, not much post-Cliff Burton however. Boston, Kansas, Journey, Judas Priest (breakin' the law ) Lots of Nine Inch Nails, Tool, A Perfect Circle, maybe a little Marilyn Manson here and there.... And since I'm from Los Angeles, always gotta throw some classic gangsta rap in there
  22. Unfortunately, nope. There are alternatives, such as the XT6 5-lug swap and the 6 lug swap. I'm sure other people will chime in; the 6 lug swap requires modification of your original 4x140 hubs I believe. Lots of info if you search around, and you'll also find out the XT6 swap is not a cheap adventure unless you get really lucky at a junkyard
  23. If you find a decent reputable shop, they should be able to yank the windshield out without breaking/cracking it. I had an '86 3-door a long time ago and was pretty much dealing with the same issues you are... other than the whole out of business thing. They may be able to salvage the current weatherstripping, maybe. I got lucky when I had to replace the windshield on the '83 Brat I owned; they were able to save it and reuse it. Now you got me kinda worried; I'm having a "mobile installer" replace the XT's windshield on Monday
  24. Maybe worth your while to make sure Mickey Mouse's ear didn't collapse... My XT ticked horribly for ten minutes or so after I let it sit for a few days... as a matter of fact I don't think I've owned one Subaru that didn't tick Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to use 10/40 in the older Subaru's. Just personal preference I suppose. Regular cheapie dino oil and a wix filter... no need to spend an arm and a leg for an oil change. If it isn't leaking now, it will sooner or later
