  1. It's true. When I had my windshield repaired, they accidentally ordered a windshield for a wagon, and it was too short.
  2. Hell, my car'll smoke and drip water out of the tailpipe for fifteen minutes on a cold start sometimes. +1 for the condensation. And my compression pretty much all reads 175 or so.
  3. Could be. I think mine's going bad too, and I have the same problem as you.
  4. I believe the rack I got from the JY is OEM, and I think the tie rod ends are too. Doesn't look like a grease fitting is on them, anyway. The top seal doesn't necessarily leak, it's just a tad of seepage while I manually turn the rack myself, out of the car of course. I just don't want to swap a rack if it's bad to begin with... it took me a while to get the used one out at the junkyard
  5. So, I figured out a long time ago that my PS boot was blown on the driver's side, and the original rack is leaking badly I found a coupe with 125k on it at the junkyard, and got the rack out of it, complete with tie rod ends and all, for $50. I bring it home, and the outer tie rod ends to my surprise were spewing grease out of the little boot Then to make matters worse, the part where the u-joint bolts onto... well the seal seems to be seeping there too, on the rack itself. All I've read on here from searching is "buy used, they rarely fail" Yet my current one with 110k is done for, and looks to be the one I got with 125k on it is probably on the same path. What should I do? Can I fix the outer tie rod end leaks? I already popped the boots off... And how about the rack?
  6. I guess my donor status expired, have to "re-up" I have put the front end on stands, and noticed nothing out of the ordinary... But I noticed my passenger side rear tire is balding funny :-\ When I took the car mudding, I slammed it into 2nd (3AT) and I kinda 180'd the whole car Oh yeah, the steering rack boot on the DS is blown too, but minus the rack leaking from what it seems to be some hole on the end of the rack, there's nothing unusual.
  7. I'm going to check the tire pressure... But I dont think thats all it is
  8. Made it back from CA to NM Still having the same problems though
  9. You can find them at the junkyard. OEM, it ain't cheap, dont ask me why Near $42 if I recall. For tees and hoses. But eh, I love my baby (I see you have a '90 Loyale.... it has the updated PCV system already. Check your PCV valve?)
  10. Mark your spark plug wires and keep note of #1 plug on the cap. Drive to parts house, take off the cap and wires (from the motor) and compare. EA81's AND EA82's are sometimes hard to get parts for, e.g. parts guy gives you the wrong stuff
  11. Replace the PCV routing if it's the old crappy system. Make sure to not forget the tiny plug for the old intake boot hose! My '86 had this joyous smoking issue (smoked more than I did ) and replacing the PCV routing took all the smoke away.
  12. To get them paid for and shipped here, nooooo thanks. Five lug and some WRX rims, I'm golden. And I bet it's cheaper than those rims shipped... Cool wheels though, if one likes them and one wants to pay shipping
  13. Whats up... More of a diagnosis really... I don't know what's wrong, I can't figure it out. I'm down in Irvine right now, and I'm leaving back to New Mexico tonight :-\ Slushbox is fine when warm... I have a line on a $200 EA82 donor wagon in Arizona with a 5 speed in it. I had a Legacy, was going to do an EJ22 5 speed swap, but that car got towed
  14. Ah, these problems havent stopped me from getting to California from New Mexico yesterday (14 hours) but I want to take care of them. She's an '86 GL 2WD coupe with a 3AT, by the way. So the car does NOT handle right. Highway driving is a nightmare. I took the car mudding in Arizona (yes, it rains sometimes) and after that, blew an axle. Replaced the axle, and now the steering wheel is turned a little left, but the alignment seems just fine. I got under the car, tie rod boot blown, and the steering rack leaks from what looks to be where the inner tie rod goes in? Then I twisted the outer tie rod ends, still connected to the car, and one has a LOT of resistance compared to the other. Then noticed my ball joint boot is blown too :-\ All of these blown things are on the driver's side. And the transmission... OEM modulator (7,000 miles ago) OEM governor (metal gear, 5,000 miles old) and I had the valve body removed and cleaned about 4,000 ago. The damn thing does NOT like shifting when cold! Tranny fluid KINDA smells like gear oil, but since I've put so many miles on her, I've noticed absolutely NO mixing of the two at all. Almost every 3AT I've seen at a junkyard has a slight smell of gear oil in the ATF. Even one with 45K miles I saw in Arizona! Help?
  15. Put the key in the on position. Jump spade connector terminal on starter to positive battery terminal. If that don't work, fuse or fusible link?
  16. "I swear Officer, I didnt know it would smoke that bad!" - Me, last April in California taking my car for a spin after Seafoam
  17. Ticking you say? My car was ticking too.... Never woulda thunk the spark plug in #2 cylinder was halfway coming out
  18. If it's a turbo, I just wouldnt buy it. Personal preference, anyway. He needs an automatic for his wife, so why would he swap to D/R? The 3AT isnt as bad as people say. OEM modulator, synthetic ATF, maybe some Trans-X, and you're A-OK. They jerk, they rev high on the highway, boohoo. I've seen worse transmissions. If the wagon is in good shape, and has papers backing that up, $800-$1000 is a decent price.
  19. I'll bite. I, too, own a problematic Subaru. 1986 GL 3-door Leaks oil from at least three places. Leaks coolant from it looks like the water pump I just replaced recently. Brakes pulsate badly and stopping is difficult. Even with new pads & rotors. Eats front brake pads and rotors every 5,000 miles. Dangit. Needs new steering rack. Steering is very scary, especially in the wind. Needs an alignment also. The three speed automatic is seeping gear oil into the tranny fluid. Gotta go. Windshield is badly cracked. More expensive to replace a coupe's windshield. I get bad vibration and road noise pretty much all the time. Still, I drive it daily, I've put almost 30K on her in one year.
  20. Yeah, agreed the filter don't do much. I had to rebuild half of my transmission, and 3AT parts are EXPENSIVE. Then I find a manual donor wagon after I spent all the money already
  21. i had an '86, same type of headlight switch, and same problem. replace the headlight switch.
  22. Who are you talking to? Anyway... I took the car to a buddy's shop, used an air chisel and a torch... Blew out about half of the roll pin then from there, my buddy torched it while I pryed on the axle, came right out. Took us a whole five hours Now my alignment is screwed up, car seems to rather turn left than right, and it kinda feels like a "constant hydroplane". Oh yah... also, if you have both front wheels jacked up off the ground, and the car is in Park, are the wheels still supposed to turn?!?
