  1. I've been offered 100 for my original cat... In California it happens every day, mainly in broad daylight... I hear about it all the time
  2. Just for reference, because this seems to be common (in my old/current subarus at least) I run one belt, because my idler totally seized on me. When I had two belts, and the thing wasnt shot, I had perfect cold AC. Ever since my idler went south, the AC would SOMETIMES only come on the first few seconds; so I took a looksie. BTW, brand new V-belt. It's already freakin glazed 5,000 miles later.... I wonder why... Seems to be (in my case) if you have inboard AC (AC compressor left to the alternator) the one belt alone will NOT give enough "grip" to turn the compressor, and the pulley will just stay in place with the belt just going over it. Outboard AC may be different, I have no idea. But check the pulley, mark an end with whiteout or a marker, and see what happens when you run the car. Also, in my case at least, the SAME thing happens with my fan clutch/water pump pulley, so be careful! Mark that one and look too just to be sure... Hard part's finding the damned idler assembly... Mine "shattered" the pulley AND ruined the bearing.
  3. It sucks around the southwest too (socal, phoenix, santa fe) but I just may take me a trip to Colorado to have a looksie, if time and money permit. I'd pee my pants if I found a coupe that wasnt so wrecked you couldnt tell it was a coupe without your suby-senses
  4. he said it just like i should have... i tend to say things wrong. but yeah, exactly what i meant, heh.
  5. I've been to Vegas numerous times in my coupe... even SLEPT in Vegas in my coupe... and I've never seen another old-skool.... weird. Not that mine's any special (OMG its 3AT nonturbo ) Good luck on the trip, dude.
  6. I don't care to read the whole thread because it's a simply stupid beginning question. For the guys talking about physics and all, this does NOT apply. The gearing in the 3AT is so wonky, it's a PITA to even get into the triple digits. And yes, I have a good running low mileage EA82 coupe, it's STILL a PITA. "The Loyale" why don't you go ahead and try to do 130 in a 3AT wagon? Keep trying and trying, until you blow the engine. Then ask us how fast you can drive with a blown engine. And I'll make fun of you once more. In other words, NO, it won't. I've topped my coupe off at 115. And it took downhill force, and the car was shaking like holy hell.
  7. I think my TPS talks to me. Even when I'm sleeping and the car's parked half a mile away :-\
  8. According to the Captain, yes, he's flippin crazy. AKA doing "crazy flipping"
  9. I've bought four Subaru's here, never once over $1,000. It's not really a hotspot in SoCal, but at the same time, you don't see them around much. I can find a 2000-2001 Outback for around $6,000 and I honestly would rather have that than an '88 station wagon. Now, an '86 RX coupe...
  10. Is the smog in Los Angeles thwarting people's brains?!? http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/car/414478474.html
  11. For a MINT 88 wagon with 46k on it, auto trans and all, I'd gladly pay $3,500. I'd even drive to West Virginia to get it. But it would have to be 100% MINT. But, I would not pay $2992 for one with 111k. I paid $125 for mine with 93K Buddy, if I were in Norcal, I'd look up Subarus for sale in the PNW, and just take the fairly short drive... You'd save a ton of cash
  12. You turn the key in the ON position, and you get no CEL? But you still get the other warning lights? Alternator failure. Same symptoms in my coupe, and replacing the alternator did the trick. Quit bothering with the other electrical crap
  13. And I live right off of Saddleback Ranch Road... I'll give you a ring tomorrow.
  14. Or... end up replacing your master cylinder and your 21 year old brake lines? I think I'm stuck doing that.....
  15. Steel wool and silicone spray solved my frozen rear wiper problem.. But I gotta coupe.
  16. Mine's so screwed up, and I can hear the speedometer clicking and ticking inside the dash cluster... it tends to stick and read low... Speedometer cable loose, maybe? I don't know. BTW crupper, your 92 aint winning any races any time soon... Why even make a big deal out of it?
  17. Well, the radiator matches the core size, everything lined up, just that silly part sticking out.... see pic:
  18. I moved to Irvine... The transmission guy down here recommended that I didnt flush it, because maybe some crap is holding it in place? Oh yeah, and the brakes never worked. Before, it was because the pads were cracked/low and the rotors were warped... now it's still just no pedal.
  19. So I've been driving my coupe ALL over the place. I've covered at least 4,000 miles in the past month. It's a love hate relationship, I've put some serious cash into her recently. I have a few questions though... 1. Will a sticky thermostat cause the car to get hotter than normal under load and up hills? I replaced the thermostat, but I'm weary of it. The cooling system had a LOT of black sludge crap in it. 2. How about radiator hoses that feel mushy? I replaced the radiator, but totally forgot about the hoses... and they feel sticky and mushy. Really weak! Can THAT cause overheating? 3. When I'm going up a hill, it doesnt ping, but it rattles the cat converter. It's got rust holes, and it rattles when I knock on it. Is that bad? 4. I just replaced the brake pads and rotors on the car, and I still have no pedal. When I pump the brakes, I can hear a hissing noise, by the booster. Bled them twice, used synthetic brake fluid, and um still, no pedal. At least it doesnt shimmy and shake when I stop now! Ummmm... ??? 5. What do I do if the stock electric fan will not mount on the new radiator I got, without the fan hitting the end tank area of the radiator? Can I use spacers or something? I want to wire it to a switch, so I can run it up high grades and stuff. 6. I just replaced the filter and fluid in the transmission... Cleaned out a LOAD of black sludge out of the pan. Put new ATF in it, and it STILL acts odd sometimes. It'll shift at 3,500 RPM, 2,500 RPM, whatever IT wants to do. Governor issue, maybe? Non-stop 900 mile trip coming up, gotta fix these snags...
  20. I've done an axle with just an OEM jack (Argh, mine are'nt clicky clicky yet, but all four boots are blown )
