And in Oregon, thers always the possibility or a lien tying up the title. I bought mine without a title cause the deal was with my mail-mans sister. Thought I could trust her. she said the title was clear, but lost. So it should have been no more than 50 bucks to apply for lost title. Turned out she had a lein from a loan company. Now in this case, the lein was paid up but she never paid the dough to DMV to get the title tranfered to her name exclusivly. The finance company who still held security interest holder had sold out to someone else. Was VERY hard to track down the new owners. But I did. They sighned off since no moneys were owed. Took time. Had money still been owed, I would have had to have paid the lein off to claim title. I was lucky. Could have got totally screwed. (I now have clear and legal title) Lesson learned. I will never, ever fork over any cash untill title issues are cleared up. Free? Well yea, thats a little different. Still, who needs the headache? Pyro

Re: your motor oil, I had horrible TOD with my Ea82 that had sat for five years but only had 12000 mi on it. It was a newly installed longblock before she sat. I tried everything I could think of as far as flushes and MMO and such, and finally decided to listen to the guys here on board and stuck in a new oil pump. TOD gone. But she still gently clattered at times with 10w-30. Yesterday, I put in a new Pure One filter, filled her up with Castrol 10-40, and wow, complete silence. So it's 10-40 for us now. I've read it a million times here on the board. Apparently these old Soobs are picky individuals when it comes to engine oil. I don't think theres one best viscosity for them. Seems like we all have to experiment and find out what our engines prefer. At least they're vocal, and tell us what they need, if we pay attention. I do think that 20w-50 is a bit to heavy for those 30 degree mornings, unless you are running Marvel with it. Good luck Pyro

I got a laugh from the dealer parts guy

I sort of consider this project a restoration. (with a lift and other customizations) The body and chasis on the wagon are near perfect. Zero rust. No way are junkyard axles going into her. I love her like I love my Harleys. I know, thats sick. But that's the way it is. I'll always welcome the oportunity to save a buck if can, but it's not the primary focus. I have the dough to purchase "new" axles, instead of re-man, so, for the sake of my own faith in the vehicle, and peace of mind, that's where I'm looking. I appreciate all the comments on various suppliers. It's all helpful information. But also, has anyone had any dealings or experience with this "Cardone" outfit that NAPA gets there "new" axles from? Thanks Gents, Pyro -
today when I called out of curiosity to get a price on "new" (not re-man) front axle for my 85 wagon. $299. plus change. I asked him if he was serious. He said "yes", but nobody buys them! I said me neither! Not sure if this is funny or sick or both. What the heck are they thinking? But seriously, after doing tons of reading here on the board, I'm thinking I wont go with re-man. I can afford not to, considering the price of (non-dealer) new axles. I've checked out Ocala Inc, and CV.com or whatever it is. My NAPA store has "new" axles from an outfit called "CARDONE" Around $90 bucks. Are they any good? Experiences? Thanks, Pyro

Yea, and if I were to go to four inch I could either just torch the curved part of the brackets and re-bend them, or cut tem off and weld direct to the tubing. On the other hand, I don't like the way the body looks from the bottom of the hatch on down, one reason I selected somethin with eight inch diameter. Supose that flat ugly part would look better if sprayed flat black. But eight inch covers it nicely. Hmmm. Much to consider. Guess I'll just drive it for now!
-
I don't mean to butt in, but since "overheating" is being dicussed, I have realized that I do not know at what temp range these engines should properly be running at? (no stock guage, just full sweep mechanical) Mine runs between 180 and 190, very little fluctuation. What is proper? Pyro (PS I'm trying to learn what "hyjacking" is, so as to not do it. {I'm new to internet forums somwhat} Is that what I just did? Somebody tell me so I can knock it off PYro

Custom bumper, unusal and (too wierd?)
pyromanic replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well those 1 inch hole drilled in the bottom have an inch of wood between them, so it's sort of a honeycomb effect. I guarantee it's WAY WAY stonger than the flimsy stock bumper. No comparison whatsoever. I know of course most folks use steel, but I don't own a welder, don't have a lot of dough, and enjoy being different. About cops, who cares? If the bumper is legal, (which I don't really know yet) I got nothing to hide. My guns are all legal, and legaly carried, don't drink and drive. Hey, I asked for opinions! No problem. I'm not convinced it's not safe though. Not gonna worry about it either. I'm just having fun! Not convinced about "other consequences" either. Lots of folks don't like stuff thats differnt, but cant' come up with good reasons. No big deal. Heck, I'm used to it, what with being covered with tatoos and hair down to middle of my back and big grey beard! Pyro -
I hear ya dragonwing. For the kind of offroading I guess your doing, the less your custom bumper protrudes out from the body, the better. Stock protrudes 7 and 1/2 inches. The log protrudes 9". I would have tucked in in further to prevent problems like you describe, but then it would interfere with hatch. So I I held it out 2and 1/2 inches from the body. This clearence also gave me the room I wanted so that theoroeticaly (sp) if I crunch the log, it's got somewhere to go before bashing into the body there under the hatch. I may very well dump the log at some point and slide in a piece of 8 inch tubing with tail light protectors/expanded metal or somesuch welded up on each end. It's a work in progress, and always will be I expect. You know what I mean! And wouldn't have it any other way!Gets me out of the house and such, ya know? I love how they engineered the bumper brackets utilizing those four bolts in the tool compartment. It's so easy to just make what we want and experement! Fun! Pyro

That's funny, the Bhagwan stuff and Spotted owl. Not me though. I'm a homegrown longhaired redneck hippie, if hippie at all. Sure, I lived through the sixties, mostly on poached venison and sellin' coyte hides and other furrbearers skins. I'm 1/4 blood Cherokee, me and Grandpa ran traps together 'till he was in his eighties. Still, I respect the wildlife, and take only what I need. No hippie stickers on this Soob. Maybe "Support the Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation, Lifetime Member", or something like that. But yup, is kinda of a whaco crazy hippie bumper I guess. Sure was cheap!! Versitile too. If I find a piece of 8 inch thinwall tubing, we'll see how that works/looks. Pyro -
Custom bumper, unusal and (too wierd?)
pyromanic replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yea, my thinking was that I didn't want too ridgid. If I were to get hit from behind, I want the log to break. It's eight inches in diameter, pretty stout stuff. Now not as tough as oak mind you, but fairly strong. I figured if it were too stout, and I got hit, or backed into something REALLY fast, like a stump,(unlikely, since I don't drink any more LOL) that it could tweak, bend twist the unibody/ tool compartment where the four anchor bolts are. The way I set it up, I hope that either the log will break, (or begin too), or the soft bolts we used will shear, or some cobination of the two. I mean, one of the ideas of a bumper is absoarb shock, so as to avoid body damage, right? I'm still concearned about the "un-safe" comments, and am afraid I'm missing something? Pyro -
Its got a few coats of clear gloss spar varnish on it. The light was poor though and it doesn't show. I have a light aluminum boat I take up to the lakes around here. (light trailer too) Will weld a cross piece to the subs behind the log, then tag out from there with a stinger and ball. I THINK the holes in the sides of the tool copartment might be able to take the load, havn't really cheked into that yet. If not, I got a truck for that. And canoe for Yakimas on top of Soob for that matter. We'll see. Think it's safer than that stock sheetmetal and plastic POS? Seems like it to me. Pyro

Thanks. Yupper, the log of course was free. I like free! Plenty of em around these parts. Traded some custom gunsmithing for the welding. It'll be easy enough to tag on to them stubs any steel configuration I want in the future. I don't know. The darn log is kinda growing on me. We'll see. Pyro -

pyromanic replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Really? If thats true, I need to understand! I'm not kidding. I was thinking that that flimsy sheet metal thing (stock bumper) was way too light for any protection. You could crumple it by kicking it! Good point about inpections, I need to check into the Oregon DMV law. I read here on the board that in some states a 2x4 is legal. Didn't think of that. Will check. So how is it unsafe? I need to know. What about with a piece of steel tubing? Thanks Pyro I just read yer post again, and OH! You said "Offroad tech inpection". I'll never be going anywhere that that will be an issue. We live in the sticks, millions of miles of forest and trails, old logging roads, abandoned skid roads. This is both my daily driver and hunting/fishing rig. -
Theres a thread about bumpers in the offroad section, and posted a link to my pics of my custom bumper there. But thought I'd post the link here too to see what people think of my very strange new bumper. My stock bumper was trashed and too flimsy to do much good anyway, and wanted something unique and beefier. This is what I came up with: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photo...ery.php?cat=500 If I decide that the log is just to strange, I can slip in a 5' length of 8" thinwall tubing. Kinda funny looking huh? I won't make a descision untill I get my lift from PK regarding keeping the log, or switching to tubing. Oh, and it's not as heavy as it looks. I bored a boatload of 1" holes on the bottom side. The darn thing is practically hollow! Thinks it's too ugly or unsafe? Seems way stouter than the stock sheetmetal and plastic to me. Brackets are Heck for stout steel. Pyro

Jeeze I'm lousy with computors. Been trying to get pics up of the cusom/disposable bumper for hours. I can't do it. Keeps telling me the file is too large, and I don't seem to get how to shrink it. But I think I some pics up in the boards gallery. I'm trying to post the link now: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500 Hope it works. If it does, tell me what you think. I think it will work out fine. Will look better when I get the PK lift too. Pretty beefy? The log should break before any body damage, and used soft bolts in the tool compartment so hope they would shear befor I bent any thing down in the unibody. (hope!) Tell me what you think? Not all will like it, but I think it's kinda cool. Pyro

I'm a newbie at this
pyromanic replied to paradise motel's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A wierd little snag that I ran into when doing mine was that a stud in the from the bell housing came out with the Junk Yard tranny that should have stayed in the bell housing. Didn't spot it untill I had everthing sucked in to that last 3/4 inch and it just wouldnt slide together. Screwed around for half an hour trying to get that last 3/4 inch or so, untill I removed it. It was really kind of obvious, don't know how I missed it. Pyro -

You know, I been thinking about this today while out in the shop. (I read the first post on this with morning cofee) I'ts so easy to get discouraged about human nature cause there is so much of this "lack of honour" thing going around in the world today. But then I stop to realize that it is often the ones that "burn" us that stick out in memory, and get talked about. But really, I think most people are honest. More than not, anyway. Hopefully, we expect it. Honesty and honor, that is. I know I have to watch myself, keep checking, to make sure I don't become too cynical, and start expecting people to fxxx me. I mean, sure it happens somethimes. But it's the exception. I want to remember that, and keep it in mind. Otherwise, I can become paranoid. No fun. Pyro AArgh, I'm rambling. Sorry. Pyro -

A mans word is his honor. (even one word, like "Sold") A life without honor is not worth living. The Samuri figured this out a very long time ago. Sure wish everyone else would. Pyro -
Speaking of bumpers, my rear bumper plastic had come loose in enough spots to cause it flap in the wind and rattle and rumble and drive me nuts! Love how easy it was to take those four bolts out of the sides inside of the tool area and remove the whole pos. My welding buddy is, as we speak. fabricating two stubs that will slide in to those mounting areas, with the four threaded holes. Out from there flat iron will drop down in like a half circle to accomodate my "disposable" bumper. I made the first "disposable" bumper today. A 8" chunk of peeled lodgepole pine, with a few coats of linseed oil. I'll just drop it into the "cradle" and lag screw it in on both sides from underneath. For a more finished "street" apearance, I'll just drop in a 5 foot chunk of 8" thin-wall tubing. Well, this is the plan anyway, if I don't like it or it don't work I'll change it! Pyro BYB Lift on order! I can't wait!!!

I took mine off and threw it away. (it did not work) Capped off the manifold where it was. I am not saying this is good. My car SEEMS to run fine. This is not advice. If problems may be expected from doing this, I think others on the board more experienced than I will chime in? (hope so!) Pyro
-
Got it. Well then I didn't help a bit!! Sorry. So can those output shafts be replaced? How hard and how much dough? Pyro
-
That part about "between thee spined output shaft and inner joint" got my attention because I was fooling around under my hood a while ago and thought I noticed the same thing. Now mind you I have no strange sounds anywhere. But when I grabbed the inner joint there was all this slop, and it seemed like it was on the splines. So I went to my donor car and same thing. (no noises in it when it ran either). What I discovered was that when either car is left parked in gear, that slop is gone. The slop is only present when parked in neutral. So I decided that it is normal play in the stub shaft (ouput shaft?) when the tranns is in neutral. I'd question that the vibration is coming from this play. Do you have this play when the car is parked in gear? Pyro
