the inserts are like heilcoils (only cheap) I decided I'm taking the engine out and getting the head welded up (should work much better.) When I do all this I will have a look at the rods and take some pics. My dad's turned up and he seems keen on getting the engine out now. So maybe tonight I'll have the pics. Till then, ARGHHHHHHHH!
-
I went thru 4 new gaskets while stopping it from leaking. I know there must be something I was missing.... My dad has always worked on his own cars and has rebuild two motors that I know of, and he watched me try and fix it twice, he has just as much idea about what wasn't going right as I did!. Hrmm.. I just found out that the insert I put in the exhuast stud hole (after it got striped out) (and now the insert has striped out the new thred) that the high temp epoxy glue I used didn't hole and the insert is just lose in there. I don't think the engine is going to be running for awhile now... it just keeps getting worse! Oh well. gotta figure out how to bolt the exhust on now. Maybe tech screws? that always seem to fix leaks in our roof!
-
No, there wasn't any lock washers. I really dont want to take the rocker covers off as it took me 5 goes with different types of gasket goo and silicone to put them on without leaking! But I guess I will just have to take them off and fix this problem, then try that sealing thing all over again :-\ ........... Maybe I should get some of those SUB4 all alloy rocker covers!
-
Nope. Nothing there. Its all just shaped around the dip stick. And I can't see anything like what your talking about there. So, that means its soild? So what does that mean, its just always gonna be loud? Time for some saving up, first I have to pay off my debt.......

Looks good. Are you thinking of covering up the filter somehow? I wonder how possible it would be to take a pipe up closer to the windscreen. I'm not so sure on the look of it going right up the fender... Maybe take it thru behind the strut pillar?

As i said before. I'm not 100% sure on all the parts in a EA81, so please explain things easy for me. I included a picy of what I think you are talking about (this boss thing)... Is the red one or the blue one what you are on about? I dont have any stickers on the rocker covers (but I didn't replace on of the covers with one out of a older subie. My FSM has nothing on EA81 hydraulic lifters (its a Gregory's.) Is this what your on about? If not, tell me where it is exactly or give me a picture to go by. Also, is there somewhere that tells me if the engine is the original to the car? Like a engine number to VIN?
-
Is it obvius when there are are hydraulic lifters in the engine? It looked all soild too me, but its the onlt subie engine I've looked in. Is there a way I can find out easily if its a hydraulic lifter ea81? I done the tappets with feeler gauges like the manual told me. I'll have another look in the manual and see if theres a bit about the lifters in there.

those 15's look sweet. Lifted street Brat? WICKED! I dunno what it is, but it looks real sporty! maybe some one should put wheels like that on a WRX! lol...

The green text doesn't need to be read. After looking at the size of the thred I thought I might just try and save you time Hey, I just got my Brat back and working after fixing the oil leak thru the striped out exhust stud hole which I had already put a instert in (and it striped most of its thread out). So after using epoxy glue made for the job and putting the pipes back on with new gaskets. It all seemed to work. But now I want to fix some noise issues with my EA81. Now for the question It has always had a loud tappet noise. I thought after adjesting the tappets it would fix it. But no, its still tapping away. I read a bit about it all on this forum and found it might be the lifters? I'm not 100% sure on all the parts in a EA81, so please explain things easy for me So. The sound sounds like its comming from each head (the 2&4 side is a little louder) It sounds just like a tappet noise. Are these engines just loud like this? Does something wear and make this noise? I know it can't be harm full to the engine cos its been going for a long time with the noise. I just want my car to be better sounding. The 2" pipe makes it sound great, but tis ticking just makes it sound crap Is there a few things you can do to make a EA81 quite? Thanks for any help.

So you used the AWD tranny? What suspension, WRX stuff? Or is it just the 4speed D/R and torsion rears and stock front? Looks sweet man. Makes me want another Brat

lifting bolt length question?
Phizinza replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had to replace a missing part of my lift on my brat, only 2" lift. It wasn't hard, just used some metal lying around. So it was pretty easy. Hardest part was getting out the stuffed bolt (reason the bit was missing) I hope you have no problem with getting out the stock bolts. Good luck. :-) -
Have some more pictures for yous! for the first pic I got a bolt, cut the end off, used a drill press to drill out the middle, then drilled a hole in the pipe and threded it with same thred the bolt has then screwed the bolt in. (sorry about all the , s) I figured since SUB4 make all alloy rocker covers the only one has a breather (other has a oil filler) I wouldn't need to have bother covers breathing. So i blocked the one on the right of the engine off. The one on the left goes thru a PCV valve which is hooked up to the inlet manifold, so i decided to keep that one as the breather... As for the vac lines into the air box. None of them should have to be used. They might need venting somewhere, but you could just do the same with the vac lines as I done with the breather, its quite easy whne you have the tools...
-
Well. When I got it it already had the twin carbs on and modded or what ever. So anyway what I'm saying is it only has two pipes connected into the air box. And there both breathers for the crank case. All the other holes in the air box are blocked off. and the sensor unpluged. And as this is my first subie, I got no idea what stock looks like. :-\ I will try moddin the PVC to fit the breather pipes in tomorrow. If I get it done good I'll post a pic up here for all to see.

MY bro also started my subie with a 80's Mitsubishi key (couldn't turn it off tho )

I have 1 and a half inch pipe off my heads going to the middle "muffler" (manual calls it a muffler, might be a cat tho.) then 2" all the way back to a stock looking 2" in 2" out muffler. Idle doesn't quite beat a v8 but when I take off it makes v8's sound like crap I dunno what's in the middle "muffler" (if there is anything in it at all) or what the rear muffler is made with. It just sounds wicked! I haven't liked the "cherry bomb" style mufflers much. A friend had one on a straight 6 old ford. It would do that back fire thing when you come off the throttle that my subie does, only it done it way too loud and kinda didn't sound right. Also it was a very loud drive. But all the squeeks, rattles, exahust leaks, and way too stiff suspension makes my drive louder, not that i mind... You just can't beat a EA81 for sound. (don't try and convince me other wise please, it won't work! :-p)

That's how my brother got into a Brat for a customer where he works. It got me worried about how easy it is to get into a MY! Dunno what the door lucks look like on the newer ones tho.

I just finished modding the PVC angle joints to fit on the carbs. I extend the screws (as it didn't look like they could be taken out and replaced.) The PVC fitting has one end chopped off so it fits under the hood. I'm using the original wing nuts off the original air box. Anyway, heres a couple of pictures as "they can tell a thousand words" (ecpecially when they have words in them ) I know this doesn't help EFI users. But its a start for a carbed subie!

It does? I don't think it could be. I've never heard of that mag. But I would love a picture of it. Only problem there is they have copy right over there content, and ya better not post a pic out of there mag here. A friend almost got sued by a magazine because he was use a scan to proving something that was in it... Anyway. back on topic, I have a twin carb setup on my EA81 and I was going to put a scoop on the hood with a CAI box under the scoop filled with foam. Then run two flexible pipes to two right angle PVC 60mm pipe fittings that I have almost customed up to fit on the carbs. But I never got round to it (couldn't find a scoop cheap enough.) I have the flexible tube and PVC fittings. So anyway, I thought maybe its possible to turn this mod into a snorkle by running the flexy tube up behind one of the strut towers and cut a hole in the fender, then put another PVC fitting in with a normal house gutter down pipe going upto the roof. All painted of cause. I'll have to finish off those PVC right angle parts then take a picy for you all. I just have to drill a hole, grind up a piece of metal as a washer, and replace the carbies center screw with a longer one. So it shouldn't take long. I'll see what I can do with it today and maybe you'll get a picy tonight (I live in Australia, approx 14 hours ahead on the clock then most of the USA) so tonight is this morning... (I think.. )

Long, Short. Closed, Open. ?
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats what I thought. Just sounds impossible to swap parts from a OHV engine and a OHC engine... Wow, didn't expect that answer. Alrighty, so its all just about what parts of the engine you have or are getting. Right... All just about how the blocks coolent jacket is connected to the heads coolent jacket. Thank you. That all made sence. Now I can start to understand all this weird talk a bit more. Cheers mate. -
So where you planning to put the radiator? I have thought about cutting the front and rear off a wagon because the radiator is the only thing in the way. from what i can see.. Why only 27" tires? I run 27" mudders on my 2" lifted Brat. 6" should get 29"s on there, or are you worried about low range being to high. Alwasys a problem...

Hey, haven't posted in a while but I would just like to know what the differences, advantages, disadvantages and so on are of these Long Blocks, Short Blocks. And Closed/Open Blocks I keep hearing about. Mainly just want to know about the differences. I saw on a different site that it was possible to put a EA81 long block on a EA82. What I know of what people call "Blocks" is the bit below the head (or inbetween, on subies.) How could you put a EA81 part like this on a EA82? Just wondering. Thanks.

Hey... Hope you like the new place. And I had a great 'Winter' here! So weird the weather around the world is. Have fun.

The other day I was offroading and on the way home my exhust was making rattles. It still does now too. If I'm idling or cruising it doesn't make the sound. But under power it is really annoying. I think its coming from either the Y pipe, or the first muffler thingy (manual calls it a muffler, but I thought it would be a cat?) How easy would it be to get this out? And stop it rattling!

Are you looking for donations? So am I

As far as I know. There is no timming belt on a EA81. TheEA81 is a push rod motor. (One cam in the middle above the crank, four little rods going to the rockers at each end of the head.) Does it still make the noise? Can you try and fine the exact location its coming from. Try using a screw driver with the tip on parts on the engine and the handle up agaisnt your ear. Maybe you have broken something in your dissy.
