1984 GL ea81 distributor replacement trouble
lrgvanman replied to lrgvanman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just a little about myself; for about 30 years of professionally turning wrenches, I was a mechanic/glorified parts changer 'cause I wasn't a master or certified I but had lots of experience. In 2005, my last job closed its doors. 6 months later, I went to work as a parts shuttle with CarQuest for 9 years (2005-2014). Getting rusty at it and so I have memory lapses once in a while of procedures I had once well known. I still do like the fact that I can save a buck or two usually. Thanks all and have great times! -
1984 GL ea81 distributor replacement trouble
lrgvanman replied to lrgvanman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Step-a-toe, I did lube first, I just forgot the resistance of new O-rings as they are actually compressed in the first usage even with the lube. I simply had to push down harder with a rag over it and with a slight rotation, back and forth, and she made contact. Thanks for asking though. -
1984 GL ea81 distributor replacement trouble
lrgvanman replied to lrgvanman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
UPDATE!! All is good now. I was determined and went back out about an hour ago. I re-pulled the partially installed distributor, eyeballed it, and finding no apparent flaws, reinserted to the stopping point, grabbed a rag, placed the rag over the distributor, and while pushing down with my weight, rotated the dist back and forth and to my pleasure, it contacted. I hooked wires and the vacuum line up and fired her up! All will be fine-tuned tomorrow. I had eventually remembered that the new O-rings resist as they are not shrunken like the old, much the same as the oil pump procedure and the new O-ring was catching on the ridge inside the shaft's opening. -

What year and engine? Did you try rockauto.com? -
My '84 GL has adjustables. One is marked '85.

Best of luck to ya. I got a pump from rockauto; AISIN WPF-005 to keep it OEM for my 1984 ea81. https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/aisin,WPF005,water+pump,2208

Looks like the pressed on pulley that comes attached to the waterpump. If you have had it changed with a lifetime warranty, you'd likely be due a defective exchange, if not, you'll have to replace that waterpump. Looks caked with oily residue. I've never seen one detach but really haven't seen it all. Try not to drive it though. Your waterpump is non functional and WILL blow head gaskets and/or worse if it hasn't already!

Headrest release...mine seem frozen.
lrgvanman replied to lrgvanman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for that info, el_freddo. I have an '84 GL wagon. Only the fronts have head rests and I only see holes, but no base plates, that the two rods of the head rest go into on the top of the particular seat. Other brand cars usually respond to a yank or hard push, but not this one. -
Sooo...Anyone out there who may be able to clue me in on how to release my headrests?...mine seem frozen and I have new seat covers to install. Thanks for all suggestions.

Car Alarms For Old Subes?
lrgvanman replied to Subarule's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I learned at 17 on a 1959 VW bus 4 spd. manual and progressed some 10 years later to learn how to drive a 5&4 in a Peterbilt. Automatics became an optional luxury. Sticks have always been my choice. -

Yes, those manual transmissions are kinda alien to youngsters nowadays! -
Car Alarms For Old Subes?
lrgvanman replied to Subarule's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found a simple one from China but after ordering, it never arrived, but my refund did. I don't have electric locks and merely need it for motion detection as well as a panic button. Hard to find so far. Good luck, Subarule. I want to monitor this as I have the need, been 4 times that someone has ransacked mine. I used to forget ,with hands full, to lock doors. I do a walk around as I leave and before bedtime. -
How early Impreza seats > EA81 ?
lrgvanman replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Following this for my '84 GL ea81. Best of luck your way. I want to replace mine as well. -
It is a noise suppressing capacitor which filters out the alternator's noise from your sound system. You will find these at any store or shop that deals with radios or automotive sound systems, or electronics suppliers.

1984 GL Wagon 4WD Fuel Pump Problems
lrgvanman replied to markjs_pnw's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have a Chiltons and same vehicle. I don't know but Chiltons is difficult and I am researching the How To Keep your Subaru Alive. I do know they are located near the fuse box. UPDATE: Chiltons claims carbureted versions do not have a relay so there is a break like a fuse or bad connection at the pump, likely. -
Distributor side timing belt snapped again
lrgvanman replied to montermahan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bummer for that and I had that happen as well quite some time ago with my '87 GL ea82. I have often wondered if my expedited measure of not changing the tensioner and pulleys may have contributed to early failure as I followed the procedure otherwise. Just glad it didn't happen in Nowhereville either time. My present Subie is a dinosaur '84 GL wagon with the gear driven ea81. Regressed to seemingly more reliability, so far. BTW, I like the air cleaner on your trike! -
Where to get EA81 transmission mounts?
lrgvanman replied to yegoshin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thank you, carfreak85. Accidentally ordering three mounts at first, I just added the final one left out and now have a total of 4 mounts to complete it. I had thought after being underneath that I had seen 4 mounts but had forgotten for sure. The pitch stopper, above, seems in great condition. I greatly appreciate your input! -
Where to get EA81 transmission mounts?
lrgvanman replied to yegoshin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How many are required for the ea81 trans.? I am too lazy to look right now. I just ordered two engine and one trans from rockauto and went by that quantity because an eBay seller had offered that qty. 3 package. My torquey critter is cracking the exhaust pipe from flex due to junk mounts. -
Got my missing tool bag, along with the lug wrench gone missing, from a Pick-Your-Part, some time ago

ea82 front wheel bearings...
lrgvanman replied to Tosh's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just bought two NAPA bearings for my 4WD 1984 GL wagon; NAPA Part number P6207J (PGB not shown in the title but IS NAPA Performer.) to go along with NEW Cardone 66-7001 axles, (seals 15801(inner) and 19603 (outer) as well). Right side for now. UPDATE: Both seals were wrong. Installer shop replaced with the correct ones from O'Reilly's; a National number I will list soon in another edit. -
Loss of power after a major backfire EA82
lrgvanman replied to Bababou's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check exhaust for flow as well. Sometimes backfires wreak havoc, clogging inside of the muffler as I found out with a Dodge. Vehicle also gets hotter with speed. Best of luck to ya!
