dragonwingsubaru replied to diluded000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
have had a few cars like that, you just gota beat the crap outta them every once in a while so it can clear its throat. my old 82 soob was like that if i babyed it it started to run like crap , but when i redlined doing a race or soemthing it would start running great -

what motor do i have?
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ill have to check the # when i get them towed to my house this evening im hopeing the motors are the same model since im dropping the 87 motor in the 85. just curious is the # difference meaning ohv or ohc motor? -
ok i tried to search before i posted this, and couldnt find any post with engine type listing, or maybe i just suck at searching lol. im trying to figure out what motors i have i have a 85 and an 87 gl wagon both with the 1.8l n/a motor are they both the ea82 motor i have seen mentioned here before? or another type?

well at least 1 bit of good news i found out the timing belts and tensioners we replaced maybe 5k before the parts car got in the accident, ill check them out while i have the heads off to do the gaskets but i most likely wont have to bother replaceing them. still waiting to get them was supposed to tow them over here this weekend but the weather was lousy and they couldnt get to the good body car since they would have had to go to mud to get it. they are gonna try to get them here today after they get outta work. after i get the cars here ill get some pics of them and post them up

well this weekend im getting my new soobs towed to the house, im picking up the things im already planning on replaceing. the head, intake, and oil pan gaskets, figured since ill have the motor apart that much i would see what else you guys think i should go ahead and replace. the timing chain was only replaced about 40k ago so that should be fine. im not looking to do any hi pro stuff on this motor since im planning on doing a build up of the bad motor im pulling outta the 85 after i get the now better motor situated in the car and get it driveable. so any suggestions on some basic stuff to do while i have it apart that much. not looking ot do a complete project on the motor right now since i want to have it going by next weekend.

well this is a real pita! i spoke with them again today and aparrently things got mixed up again, since 1 car has 1 bad part and another one has another part, apparently i dont have much to worry about. the dif is good on the 5spd good shape car the the dif is bad on my parts 1 and since its only my an auto tranny in my parts 1 it really doesnt hurt my feelings all that much lol. i swear im never gonna buy another pair of cars at the same time it is too friggen confusing well ty for the responses, ill be posting alot more after i get ready to do a lift to it

just want to make sure that it isnt possible to use an automatic dif on a 5spd(not that i dont believe u shawn) or maybe someone could tell me what this prob might be, its locked up the front wheels to the point that you cannot just push the car, any advice would be very helpful, since i cant seem to find a rebuild kit 4 it

well i asked this forum about a week or so ago if this soob purchase was worth it and decided to buy the pair. well first off i misheard the woman telling me that a transfer case was bad( found out from u guys there wasnt 1 lol) not what she did say was wrong was the front differential. well my question is will the front differential from my parts 87 4x4 wagon auto fit on my good 85 4x4 wagon with a 5 spd. i gotta swap the motor from the 87 into the 85 as well. which both are 1.8l. for those of you that hadnt seen my original post i am getting both these for $600. and the parts vehicle has pretty much every part on it in good usable condition except for all the pass side body work. and the bad motor in the 85 is in rebuildable condition so i guess i got a high pro guine pig (however u spell it lol) i will having these towed to my house this weekend and start digging in on getting the 85 going. btw its rust free:) and the body is in great shape only body damage at all is on the back bumper which should be an easy fix or maybe the back 1 on the 85 is in good shape. i forgot to look. i have had soobs b4 but i havent worked on one in a few years and my last 1 was a 2wd 82 wagon so on the 4x4 stuff i gotta learn all over again. im sure there will be many more questions as i get my project underway, ill get some pics of them after i get them over here this weekend

lifted 2wd -my first stupid idea
dragonwingsubaru replied to Roobaflu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i personally wouldnt bother to lift a 2wd, at least not a front wd if u plan on doing any serious mudding, my last 2 offroad fun vehicles were a 89 2wd astrovan with a 5 inch lift and 31 10.50 at's , and a 91 plymouth laser fwd with about a 2 inch lift on it,and if i remember right i was running 245 70 14's at's on that. a soob may do much better with just 2wd ,but my laser didnt do well at all. any time i got into anything remotely serious i was dragging out the comealong to get it back out and i personally think it did lousy in the simplist of offroad terrain. but like i said it wasnt a soob so that may be different.now the van was a different story though that thing was about bulletproof i think i only had to use the comalong once and that was only because i tried to drive through some ruts that were almost 2 feet deep and got the crossmember stuck on the middle. anyways i would suggest doing the 4x4 conversion myself that way you could have a lot more fun offroad with it -
my wife named my car lastnight
dragonwingsubaru replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well when i pick up my wagon i bet me and the wife will call it christine 3, since the last 2 vehicles i have named that have seroiusly had a personality of their own, i swear if i am driving that vehicle and talking about getting rid of it it suddenly starts running like crap(no joke lol). maybe im just going nuts lol -
is this worth it??
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks for the info, didnt know they didnt have a tcase, i might have misunderstood what she told me, im gonna look at them tomorrow or sat, will let you guys know what i think -
hi i have owned a cpl of subaru wagons over the years and have a chance to pick up a pair of wagons and wondering if anyone thinks the deal is good. the one with the good body is an 85 4x4 auto with a bad engine and t-case, the body is mint though with no rust since its a tenn car, and only dent on it is the back bumper is bent a little. now the parts one that will come with it is an 87 4x4 with a good motor and tcase and a 5 spd. now i havent phsically seen them yet will be going to this weekend but according to the owner the good engine is partially dissassembled and just needs a new head gasket and intake manifold gasket. and to be reassembled and put in the good body car. both the bad and the good motors are the 1.8L, she only wants 600 for the pair. i think its a great deal but wanted to get some of you guys opinions. and also wanted know if pretty much all parts are interchangeable between the 2 years. dont have a clue if either of them are a turbo i forgot to ask. i know she also has a 87 sedan that just needs a new timing kit for 200 but she says that 1 is more of a beat around town vehicle. not really interested in the sedan but got my heart set on the wagon pair, and on the good side as long as the bad motor block isnt cracked i gotta motor to mess around with for high performance mods later on. thanks for any advice eric
