  1. manuel chokes suck i wouldnt even bother with it, great for startup but once it is warm its a pita if u get on the gas at all because u gotta keep messing with it all the time i personally would rather run with no choke at all than a manuel choke
  2. ok 1 up an d1 down now i really gotta say that the haynes manual sucks since it shows both dots are supposed to face up, i just always doubt those books thats why i ask the experts
  3. ok maybe i didnt make much sense there i do that sometimes lol, i did the finger thing and got it tdc and made sure the mark on the flywheel was at 0 and the # 1 piston was all the way to the top when it was, and maybe i missaid the 180 degree thing looking at the crappy haynes manual it shows the one opposite #1 is #2 on the disty. and no i didnt time it myself the previous owner had done it not even 5 k ago so i didnt mess with that stuff. so anyone know which direction those cam? dots are supposed to face?
  4. well today i went out to ckeck out how my timing was set since i have been noticeing that my 85 is lacking some power and when i got #1 to TDC and checked the dist instead of it pointing to 1 it was pointing a complete 180 degree turn from it to #2 now when i took it out and set it to # 1 the car wouldnt start at all, but when i set it back to the #2 it would crank back up again. i got it idleing somewhat smooth at about 1k rpm's, but i can hear a little miss when its runnign though, but it just lacks the power when i give it gas and i kinda notice a muffled ticking kinda sound, and not the ticking sound i usually hear from a soob. could it be that the timing belts are set wrong? what direction are both of the little dots supposed to face? is it both up or 1 up and 1 down? and help would be appreciated i really dont wanna go through pulling the cover off if i dont really have to but i may need to.
  5. im pretty sure the axles thould be the same, i just swapped on both front driveaxles from my 87 automatic ,parts car to my 85 d/r 5spd and they fit perfect, as as for dragging it out i dont see it being much of a job when i stripped an astro van i had i dragged it outta my garage over the dirt outside of it with a little fwd plymouth laser with a 1.8 in it lol
  6. maybe she will i think she is still nervious from my last mud runner i had lol it was an 89 chevy astro with a 5 inch lift on it and i almost flipped that 1 a cpl times so i guess she figures im gonna do it to this car even though its much closer to the ground right now. decided to wash it yesterday to get the mildew off the side from it sitting for almst a year and when i pulled back in to pick up the wife from work the ppl that owned the car said "dont u know subbies run better dirty" lol
  7. well if u guys remember i was having a few probs with geting my subaru to run right after a motor swap. well come to find out the only real prob i seemed to be having was i needed a new battery since the old 1 was so dead. apparently if it is pretty much running just off the alt the carb will nto run right, and also it will make the motor knock, since i put in th enew battery it now runs nice and quiet, not even a lifter tick! i am still lacking some power though, i think it might be off a little on the timing, i tried to advance the timing and it didnt make much of a difference, so i guess i gotta pull the timing cover off later on to make sure the timing is set right there. the 5spd dr 4wd works beautiful too already hit a cpl mud holes to scare the hell outta the wife lol, she hates it when i get the car sideways going up a hill lol. now all i got left to do is rip off the cat and muffler and put my turbo 2 muffler on it, and get that damn dead mouse outta my heating system(god that thing stinks when i turn on the heat lol!!!!
  8. i have the flush turn signal, and black bumpers on my 85 gl and my 87 gl parts car has the colormatched recessed light bumper. i personally like the flush light look better
  9. well i double checked the wireing and it is all correct, got the vacum lines hooked as best as i could, it seems that part of my problem on that seems to be the choke is holding the flap all the way open, and i noticed that the choke piece is getting really dmn hot. but after i held the flap i could get it to rev up but now i think i got more internal engine probs, there is a really loud clattering sound about in the middle back of the motor and when i go to rev it up the motor will wobble reaally badly. so any ideas on this 1, i can give more info if it helps someone figure this out
  10. im pretty sure i got the plug wires right on the cap but thats a good thought to double check the obvious like that i didnt even think of that lol its gonna be hell figureing out where the vacum lines go since they werent hooked up on either car when i bought them and the haynes manuel is absolutely useless to help me figure that out, so does anyone have a diagram of that, ill also try a search to see if i fin it as well will post it here if i do
  11. ok here goes -yes there is enugh oil in it -yes the engine was good b4 or so i was told -no i didnt rebuild the carb it was in very good condition -not sure what u mean by the accelerator pump if your are meaning the fuel pump it is newer -no it isnt blowing fuel since i switched carbs -stream is good outta the carb from what i can see -yes i changed the plugs cap and rotor and the wires are almost brand new -im gonna finish up the carb tomorrow when it is warmer its like 30 here today and its supposed to be like 50 tomorrow so im gonna do it then just not planning on checking the site while im working on it so im trying to get ideas what to look for thats all
  12. so i guess there are no ideas on my probs yet? ill check back in a cpl hour
  13. well as some of you know i got a pair of wagons last week an 85 and an 87 for parts. now i have put the 87 motor in my good bodyed 85 adn now after haveing a carb issue with the 87 carb i got it running with 85 carb. now my problem is that it will idle perfect but when i go to give it any gas it just refuses to let it rev up at all. now i still have a cpl of vacum hoses to figure out where they hook up on the carb adn whatnot but if they werent already hooked up to something i plugged them temporarily so i could test the carb out in general. now 1 thing i have noticed is i can hear some motor noise but its not constant, and it doesnt really sound like the typical subaru tick either, i have noticed that the exhaust seems to miss at the same times that i hear the sound, it sounds more like a light knocking sound. now when i sit in the car i notice that the tach is going crazy wobbling around and there is no oil pressure at the gauge unless i try to give it some gas then it will work its way ur to almost the top point. so any suggestions?and also does anyone have any info on where all the vacum lines are supposed to go on an 85 gl. thanks in advance and sorry this is so long winded i was trying to give all the info i could to help u guys maybe help me figure this out
  14. just trying to figure out what type of front end an 87 justy gl should have? the reason im asking is my landlord got one a little while ago and he told me the title said it was an 87 and the vin # matched, but it has the 4 sealbeamed headlights, and lookes alot like the 82 wagon i used to have, and i thought they stopped aking the front end that way in the early 80's so what do u guys think it might be? btw i know its not the original motor in it since it has an ea71 in it
  15. well i got the motor in and hooked up today, and got a fuel pump put on, all i have left to do in the morning is hook up the exhaust to the motor, and switch out the rad that i put in since i didnt realize i didnt have a dame drain plug to it and cant find 1 at the auto parts store to fit it. i should have it done by lunch time tomorrow i hope, depends how early i get motivated tomorrow
  16. forgot to mention both motors are out and the good motor will be ready to put in in the morning tomorrow, just got a cpl last things to do to it and its done.
  17. miles my parts car really isnt worth fixing to me the pass side body is pretty messed up ill try to get some good light pics tomorrow morning. and it would have no motor and the front dif is locked up on the tranny. its more worth it to me to just gut it for everything i want like suspension stuff, and whatnot and sell the cpl things that wont work on the 85 like the rear diff and prob scrap it out after i got it completely stripped. lukas im gonna change the grill after i figure out how to hook it up, noticed today that the way they hook up is different, im prob gonna use the back bumper off the parts car but the front bumper as damaged so im not gonna use it. if all goes well im planning on going up star mountian with some friends next month, so im gonna hopefully get some great pics at the top
  18. lol started unbolting the stuff to get the bad motor out and when i grabbed the tools i grabbed a beer 2 lol:drunk: all i got left to do to get that 1 out is unbolt it from the tranny and get the motor mount bolts, on the good motor it is already unbolted by the previous owner, so i just gotts hoist it out
  19. forgot to mention i paid $600 for the pair of wagons not sure if you can really make out the body damage down the pass side of the 87 its actually ripped open on the rear 1/4 panel
  20. it cost me $80 for towing but at least i finally have them after over a week heres some pics of them the first is my 85 with the bad motor but perfect rust free body except for 1 tiny spot on the rear quarter and its got 156k on the running gear and here is my parts 87 with 205k on it im def gonna switch over the grill from the 87 since i like the way that one looks more than the 85 grill more. they are both 4x4 and the parts 87 is an auto with a bad front differential and the 85 is a 5spd d/r tranny are gl models i should have the 85 running before the week is out next week.
  21. well its kinda funny i hadnt even looked at the milage till today when i was up there getting the titles. kinda funny my good motor has 205k on it, and my siezed motor in my good car only has like 90k on it. i hadnt even thought of looking at the milage since it was a soob. the 2 i have bought in the past years both had over 300k on them so i didnt even wonder till today what the milage might be.lol:confused:
  22. yeah they are both ea82's so at least i can use those for backup axles in case i break 1 which knowing me i will lol
  23. well after almost a week of waiting for them to get towed to my house i said hell with it and im paying someone to tow them over tomorrow morning, and ill have my motor from my parts car out b4 evening so i can get it all regasketed and hopefully drop it in the good body car on sunday afternoon if the weather cooperates with me. i do have a question though does my 5spd d/r 85 have the same rearend as my 87 auto? i think i remembered reading that the gear ratio would be different on them? if they are different ill probably go ahead and sell that rearend since it is almost brand new from what i was told. as soon as i decide what what parts i want off the parts car ill have some parts up for sale on it. 1 more question is the driveaxles the same between the 2 cars?
  24. well i havent had a chance to try out the d/r 5 spd in my 85 yet as i am still waiting to get it towed here. but on my first soob which was an 89 gl-10 turbo wagon, with an automatic i think it did fairly well in the mud and offroading but i could still see the advntages that a 4 or 5 spd d/r would have
  25. pretty sure there is a soob dealer in cleveland other than that im not sure since im north of cleveland a little
