needing a good snorkel idea, i took the soob out to this local mud spot today and it did perfect except for this 1 deep puddle that pretty much completely submerged the engine and when it did i barrely got outta it and then had the car die on the road 4 a few got it going and got it home but almost till i got to the house it was backfireing through the carb and there was muddy water all around the inside of the air filter. so i really think i need a high mounted air intake for this but dont have a clue what to use or where to start, any ideas? moderator go ahead and move this to offroad i wasnt paying attention where i posted i guess lol

how much power does this thing add?
dragonwingsubaru replied to moshem74's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
its crap ive seen this same exact thing talked about on every auto forum i have been a member of, and every single board will tell a blow dryer on steroids is not a intake! or a way of forced induction. if you are really wanting more power get a turbo or do some tuning to your n/a motor dont waste your money on that crap -
well someone mentioned turbo earlier, im really not interested in running a turbo on my motor though i would prefer to keep it n/a. basically my idea on the 4bbl was to push a few more ponies outta my motor. looks like i may just wait till i can get my hi-pro buildup of my other motor done to attempt this. anyone think it would help with the 4bbl for running a NOS system though?

how to bypass neutral safety switch
dragonwingsubaru replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
didnt even know the 85 even had the neutral start switch, i guess maybe the original owner of mine must have disconnected it. as for all the noises are you trying to run it with a dead battery with jump starting it to get it runnning? i had done that after i put my motor in my 85 and it was sounding like rods knocking and everything else, as soon as a bought a brand new battery and put it on all the noises stopped and it runs completely quiet now. so i would say a fresh battery and see how it does -

sorry to hear about your soob loss, but glad to hear you made it out ok, like northguy said board members cant be replaced, cars can, and i have been at that same point before with pretty much nothing but a place to live and that was just barely, just remember this things will always turn around for you sometimes it just takes longer than you would like! -
well like i had said guys i was just kinda throwing the idea out there kinda wondering if someone had tried it b4. from the response so far though im gonna assume that other than looks it would prob be a big waste of time. i could be wrong on it being a 650 but i would say at least it might be a 550.for right now i cant even seem to figure out where i put the thing at though lol

voltage question
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i have at least put 24 hours of driving into it since i got it all together, so im suprised that it hadnt blew up the battery yet from what you guys are saying, and since its a brand new batt i really dont want it to do that, if the rain stops im gonna take it off today and get it tested, thanks for the info guys and yeah i blew out both of my high beams already, i just thought it was because they are the same lights that were already in the car that has been sitting for who knows how long -
i was in autozone and noticed those adapter plate to make a 4bbl fit a 2bbl intake and vise-versa and it looked like the 2bbl side would fit the soob intake, has anyone ever tried this. dont know if it would even work at all. i gotta holley 650cfm sitting around here somewheres that i could put on if someone thinks this could work. basically this is just an idea im throwing out there, if someone has mentioned this b4 i am sorry for repeating it, but im just kinda curious since this hitachi i got on it now sucks in my opinion

voltage question
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hmmm sounds like i might wanna pull it off and get it tested then the car the motor was in sat for like 4 to 6 months so i guess it could have gone bad in that time -
i dont happen to have a voltometer right now so i cant be completely accurate on voltage but on my inside gauge it pretty much constantly reads at the 18 or above area, and i have noticed that when i am running the rpm's higher the headlight are much brighter than normal, its like the low beams are about as bright as a high beam. im wondering if there is a difference in the alts from an 87 automatic 4x4 wagon and a 85 manual 4x4. bboth cars have the power windows and whatnot so i would assume they would run on the same voltage. or does there happen to be a voltage regulator somewheres in the engine bay and if so where is it , that might be bad. dont get me wrong more voltage is good but im worried about 2 much messing something up. it will still hold about on the 17 with the lights on and the heater up and the rear defroster on with the car idleing at about 600 rpm so im really wondering if something is gonna melt soon because of this. oh btw the alt was on the motor from my 87 parts car, that i put in the 85

What it should of looked like.
dragonwingsubaru replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
great photochop work. even though i dont own a brat and one wouldnt be pretical for me with a family of 4 i still have always liked them and would be more interested in seeing a new age brat kinda like the one you did. these half-pint pickup jokes companies have been coming out with are kinda useless in my opinion. if they made a new age one lke that i just might have to buy one for a toy lol. old brats are kinda hard to find around here, i only know of like 2 around here, but there might be more -
kinda funny i was thinking about something like that the other day, except i was thinking alot simpler and lower cost as well. i was thinking about midifying some air shocks on all 4 corners though. prob never try my idea though, because if i get into adjustable suspension i would end up dropping the frame rails to the ground instead of lift stuff. so i think ill most likely stay away from it lol

Positive experience at the local 4x4 shop
dragonwingsubaru replied to singletrack's topic in Off Road
it nice when people actually say something about offroading in something that not many other people will offroad in. i got a lot of respect from the local offroaders here in my astro after i had to pull there 4x4 toys outta the stuff i just went through with no prob. about the only people that i think really give you hard time about that stuff are the people that dont even hit the dirt with their 4x4's -
stock bumper clearance while offroading
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Off Road
well i havent heard the preaching about the bumpers till now since im still fairly new to this site, but a bumper upgrade sounds like a little better thing than the stock ones. wish i still had the one from the back of my toyota it would have looked good on the soob, it waas a duel steel tube bumper where the the top tube was a little shorter than the bottom one so it would have prob cleared the light area perfectly. well i took my crappy stock muffler off today and put on the cherry bomb muffler and decided not to do the side exit just ran it to even with the bumper and positioned it right in the exhaust groove in the bumper so maybe it will be a little better than the weak stock one since the metal for the tube is like twice as thick as the stock pipe was so now running a 2inch muffler with 2 in the rest of the way out. and as for being streetlegal it doesnt matter here as long as something is there, it is literally legal to bolt on a piece of 2x4 as a bumper here lol these stock bumpers are really weak on the metal part that is for sure i literally bent it back the way it was supposed to be by hand so i would imagine they would be pretty uselass in any type of a hit. a lift kit is planned but need to get the money first and also i gotta keep it a little pratical since it will be my daily driver as well as the family fun vehicle, my kids have missed going mudding so much since i got rid of my astrovan, they are so happy again lol -
stock bumper clearance while offroading
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Off Road
qman i didnt measure it but after i got the back bumper on today it looked a bit higher than 10 inches. of course i dont really have anything in the back of it except fluids and the stock soob tool kit( found it in mint condition in the back lol) and if i wanted to keep my car on the road i wouldnt have bought a d/r 4x4 soob, because streetwise power on this is a real sleepy time car lol. this time i heavy duty zip tied every da$% hole on the bottom of the bumper so maybe it will stay on a little better this time -
hollowing exhaust
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
im not really worried about the car being louder, you can run straightpipes with minimal interior noise if you make sure you run it all the way to the edge of the bumper. and since i live in bfe most ppl around here dont even have an exhaust that runs much past the y pipe. so mine will actually be quieter than most lol. not too sure about the beating the hell outta it way though since ballitch was saying that he still has stuff rattling around in it. maybe i could cut the pipe just after the cat and have a good spot to put a coupling on ill check out my parts car exhaust to see if i can do that. if i cant find a way to do this i guess i may have to keep that 1 intact -
man the clearance on these stock height soobs while offroading seems to suck a little. i was just going through this little mud spot checking out how good the 4wd worked and was going through a 3 foot wide and about foot deep creek and dented in the lower part of the front bumper and ripped off the rear bumper cover and crunched the exhaust tip almost completely closed. funny part is on the rear bumper is if i had made it up the too steep to go up spot to get out i would have made it all the way home before i noticed the back bumper wasnt there. when i turned around and came back had to stop dead in the deep mud and get out and go into the creek to get the bumper cover and then walk around to the back to toss the bumper in the back. at least the soob didnt get stuck at all. think when i put my turbo 2 muffler im gonna make it a side exit or get a good heavy duty rolled end tip that maybe wont crush as easy. any of you other guys run into the prob of bumper clearences in ur soobs. yes im planning on lifting it later on gotta save up the money for it first.

i wondering what you guys do to hollow out the front cat, i dont have a welder available to me to do it or i would just do that cutting apart and rewelding it back together. so what are you guys suggestions? im gonna be using the exhaust off my parts car to do this so i dont have to take my soob off the road while im doing it. im planning on removeing the center cat and replaceing the the stock muffler with a crappy 2inch turbo 2 muffler. i already have the muffler just waiting to put it on till i get the rest of the exhaust done. so do you guys hollow it out or is there something else you know to replace it with?

Dumb question: EA81,EA82 what is this?
dragonwingsubaru replied to MR_Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey dont feel bad i joined this forum about a month ago and when i first came here i was trying to figure what they were talking about, you learn pretty quick though lol -
just did both of mine the other day, took no effort on my parts car but on my 85 i had to do the before mentioned beating a screwdriver into the pinch part, and then i took my regular soob tire-iron and stuck it between the lower arm and the knuckle and did some wedgeing with it to get it moving a little then stuck my head in the wheelwell area and used my hydro jack handle to push downward with a little brute force, and i was done. gonna have to do it again this weekend i think im gonna nab my good control arms and balljoints off my parts car and put them on the 85. oh and btw mine had been sitting for quite a while and had a bit of rust on them from sitting, and i didnt use any penetrateing oil since i couldnt figure out where the hell i put it last lol
-
yeah both the manual chokes i had b4 were on autos but i still personally thing they suck, would think even more on a manual tranny since u usually get the rpm's up a bit higher before u shift, or at least i do

ea82 lacking power
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i didnt have a chance t day to check that stuff otu but i did take it out to do a few errands today, just a short run 50 miles or so lol. and noticed that when i pushed my foot down far enough on the gas to open the 2nd barrel of the carb it seemed to pickup quite a bit. im kinda wondering if all my probs are more related to a partially clogged injector than the timing. -
