center cap dissapointment :(
dragonwingsubaru replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i may be wrong on steelies, on my 87 parts car i had the steelies and just had stock subaru hubcaps on them.you could try to find a set of those if the steelies wont accept either center cap. the one on the back tire are the ones i had, had a full set of them but didnt figure anybody would want them so i let them go with the car when it went to the scrapyard, sorry if you had wanted them -

YAY !!!! i got my clutch and accellerator cable issue taken care of thanks to Miles advice, now this little hatch will lay a 30 ft patch of smoking rubber down the pavement, and the only reason it stops at that is because i let off the gas. i was gonna sell this after i got it fixed but i think its just too much fun to sell, dont get me wrong i love my wagon, but this little hatch i can beat the hell outta and have a good time with, and save my wagon from the beating (other than the offroading of course) makes me think i gotta do some fine tuning to my wagon since this little ea71 has way more power than the ea82 in my wagon -
clutch and gas pedal adjustment ?
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey miles that fixed the clutch great now thanks!, the accellerator prob ended up being because the idiot that sold the car to the guy i bought it from didnt run the cable through that upper part where it connects in the carb. the guy i bought it from thinks he knows cars, but he still drove it like that with a real sudden surge for almost 4 months lol. and once i looked at it for myself i found it real quickly lol -

the first pic is of how my steal wheels on my hatch are set up they have that big metal lip as part of it for those old style ones.so i need no trim ring for that style. the 2nd and 3rd pic of are both side by side, the one that you will want is the one on the left, you need the plastic trim ring for these i believe, or at least i do on my wagon wheels. -
ok got my 87 hatch going now i have a question, where should i look first to adjust the pedals. the clutch grabs just barely off the floor and the gas pedal seems to be way to low as well, i keep either giving it too much gas or not enough and stall it. both pedals are also fairly hard to push as well, or at least compared to my wagon they are, alot more pressure is needed to get them to work at all. the gas pedal seems fine at the carb if im giving it gas at the carb. thanks in advance Eric

yeah its a 85 gl 4x4 wagon with the d/r 5spd in it. yeah gotta love the older soobies, and i do understand about having to watch the money, still kinda on the wifeys s-list for buying this 1 only like 2 months after i just bought the wagon. try looking in the seabrook area there at least used to be a butload of them there when i was last up there a few years ago. ill be moving back up there next spring so we gotta meet up sometime. we were living in portsmouth nh before we moved to this hole in the wall about 7 yrs ago, and my dad is still up there in epping. -

actually those are fro the steely wheels i think i have a set of the same exact ones on the 87 hatch i just bought and its got the steal wheels on it, i tried to see if they would fit on my wagon wheels on my 85 wagon and they wont fit still have the same clearance issue on the back tire. the ea82 ones are shorter prongs with a fatter top piece on them i can get a pic of that type if you want to see what they look like if you want to see the type of wheels i have those type on look at my post (my new 100 sooby) -

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!! well after about a half mile of walking around the only jy that even had any soobs i found a twin hatch to mine sitting on its side with a ea81 motor in it, it was an 84 but the disty was in good enough shape even without a cap on it since the hood was still down. its runs great, i do have a couple of things im gonna have to do to it though, the clutch catches way to low and the gas pedal seems to do the same, but other than that it seems to do just fine, glad i didnt waste $100!!! lol -

erik this car actually does run well once i get the disty replaced, and i know that for a fact since i just bought it off my landlord and seen it driven every day for the few months he owned it, and i know anything he did to it since he lives not even 200ft from me and was always asking for my help working on it. so really i got more than i paid for just knowing how it runs, as well as knowing all the many parts the car got before he go it, just from looking under the hood morgan yeah gotta love them and actually other than most of the interior being rough other than the seats, and the dash, the only body damage on it really is on the pass side as you see and a little denting on the hood, the drivers side is pretty much all straight, thing even has a bumper mount tow hitch on it. lefty i might try imming him a little later on today as i gotta get off here as soon as im done this message for now. tscinmd i gotta call a guy back in a few and find out about if he has a disty and if he doesnt want a rediculious amount for it ,if that doesnt work out, ill def get in touch with you , because i really need to get this going in a cpl weeks at most since im fixing to move -
hatch suspension swap question
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks for the info miles well i guess i might as well put them in the marketplace then if i gotta do modding, its really not worth the extra effort for a cheapy beater car. now why the hell did soob make things so difficult on only certian vehicles, its sad the stuff came of an 87 but cant fit on an 87! lol yeah i wasnt worried myself about it lacking some power especially since its a 5spd -

hatch suspension swap question
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
believe me sucker king lack of hp isnt a worry, ive done towing of this same trailer loaded up with a 3 cyl auto metro b4, as well as 4 or 5 other vehicles with around the same hp or less. it might take a little bit to get going off a stop since i live in the mountians but after it gets going it will be fine. i just dont like how spongy the back feels. -

hatch suspension swap question
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well that rear setup thing is the most stupid thing ive ever heard of then!! well i guess that explains why it rides like crap then. im gonne fit the coilovers in there 1 way or the other since i want a little bit more tow capacity on the back end of it to tow my 7 ft trailer when i start moving in the next 2 weeks or so.and it looks liek there should be plenty of room for them. didnt even think about the bolt setup being different till you mentioned that dr rx duhhhh!!! i probably should have noticed that. basically this hatch is just my beater car even if at least body, and after i get a new disty, engine wise is in pretty decent shape. im just trying to basically make it so it can handle more weight -
hatch suspension swap question

im wanting to knwo if the struts from my 87 4x4 wagon that i stripped will fit on an 87 2wd hatch. i gotta put the rear coilovers anyways since for some reason there is only a shock back there and no coil on it( guess previous owner just replaced it with a shock). now im figuring that with the coilovers in it will prob raise the back quite a bit so i want to even it out a little with the struts in the front, so can it be done???? i personally think it sits way to low for me to be happy with it living out here in the boonies anyways lol -
well yesterday i bought the hatch that i was talking about the disty issues with ,found out today it was definatally a disty issue and now i just gotta get another 1, anyways, as the title says i paid 100 for it. its an 87 2wd hatch with an ea71 motor and 5spd tranny its got some dents on it and the interior is pretty rough but it is rust free at least. well heres the pics

ea71 engine questions
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok i know im gonna sound nice and stupid asking this, but is the ignition module the one right next to the pickup coil????, btw the disty is the late model nipendenso style, at least it looks like it comparing the pickup coil setup in the crappy haynes manual -
ok well the hatch i was talking about in the other post (will an ea82 disty fit in an ea71 motor) is now mine i bought it off him nice and cheap!! now heres my question it doesnt seem to be getting any spark when i check it, ive done the backyard check on both the sparkplug wire and the wire from the coil (backyard meaning stuck a screwdriverin the end of the wiresd and looked for spark when i cranked over. now the coil had been replaced recently and was double checked with another coil that was good to see if it was a bad coil and still nothing. now i did notice when i pulled out the disty it had a little bit of up and down play in it on the inside piece that the rotor connects to i didnt figure that was normal. anyone got any ideas what this problem could be??? btw info on this car is: 87 hatch with ea71 and 5spd tranny 2wd
-
i think it is the same type of bellhousing as the ea82 ill have to look again later on though, actually i offered him $100 as is but he wouldnt take it, lol all i would use it for is sell the motor since it didnt tick or smoke and use it as a guenie pig (sp) for my hydrogen experiment, since its got a 5 spd in it and its alot lighter than my ea82 wagon
-
well it looks like it will be too much of a pita from what you guys are saying to switch the disty in, mainly im thinking it is that pickup coil inside it so i guess ill just tell him to replace that then, btw in my last comment i meant it as a joke and apparently forgot to put lol, i know it takes a while to get something answered sometimes. do you have to pull apart the disty to replace that? the one he has looks like the white one in the front http://usmb.net/gallery/album80/1987_j im curious did they have both styles in 87?? ok then lets make sure im looking at the right thing here it doesnt seem to be getting spark to it, the coil is newer and just to make sure that wasnt faulty he tried a working one for sure and tat didnt help, also has a newer cap and rotor on it. basically he said when it died it was staying running but a little rough and as soon as he had shut it off it wouldnt start back up again i would agree with the ea82 swap but 1 he doesnt have a clue on doing it and 2 after he fixes it he is selling it anyways he has it for sale now for 350 obo but since soobs arent popular down here nobody wants to buy one that isnt running.
