the reason im asking is i had a new lower balljoint come with my 87 wagon i scrapped and didnt need it on my 85, but today i did find that i do need 1 on the hatch. is the front lower balljoint the same for the 2wd hatch as it is for the 4wd wagon? i looked at it visually and they seem to look the same but before i tear it apart i would like to know for sure.

Rad fan toggle switch?
dragonwingsubaru replied to ckappler's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i have my main cooling fan on my wagon as the motor controlled 1, but got extra cooling i had run a toggle switch for my ac fan on the rad for extra cooling when i need it. the fan will go in either direction if you put it on pos and neg ad then reverse it, i set it to pull the air through the rad and ran a power to that 1 and grounded the other wire -

Custom bumper, unusal and (too wierd?)
dragonwingsubaru replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey pryo had to check out your thread on this since it was first posted im my other thread. looks liek over all you have gotten a favorable response to it, and i see the offroaders agree with me on it sticking out too far and not being that good for offroading. but hell have fun with the soob and make it the way you want it, thats half the fun!!!! ide say to do a little offroading fun to see how well it will hold up, -
was a little bored so figured i would post a couple pics of my soob after i went mudding on sat, damn i cant wait till it rains again it came out 2 clean!!!!lol its now rear bumperless after this adventure since i managed to break most of the belds on the bumper bracket!!!lol

dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

stock bumper clearance while offroading
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Off Road
yeah that would definetally be too much out for me, i tend to go through alot of extreme angle stuff and since the only lift i have at the moment is the rear suspension up all the way and the front up about 3/4 of the way i hit my bumper way too much right now. yeah i know what you mean on stuff to get you outta the house, im always tinkering with 1 thing or another on both my soobs, probably why they both run perfect now. lol i think if you decide to go with steel you should go with like 4 inch and remake your bracket setup i think it would give it a good clean look. yeah those easy to get to bracket bolts are nice and so easy to get out. -

torsion bar adjustment?
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well at least body style wise it looks like an ea81, thanks for that info ill check it out and see if its set up that way -
ok i did a search and couldnt find anything(maybe i just suck at them)and the haynes manual is completely usless(big suprise) exactly how do you adjust the rear torsion bar on an 87 2wd hatch, im wanting to lift it up a little bit and maybe stiffen it up, since it rides much more mushy than my wagon. i have seen mention of screws but not sure what screw im supposed to even look at?

stock bumper clearance while offroading
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Off Road
not too bad pyro, but definetally not the route i wanna go, is it just me or does that look like it sticks out way farther than the stock bumper? ide rip that thing off my first time out on the trail!! im going to use the stock bracket pieces and bolt a small plate to it and then probably 2 pieces of 1 1/2 or 2 inch tubing. and im gonna keep it real close up to the body so i dont have that rear clearance issue anymore, because it it doing much better with no bumper at all on it, but i want something there to at least protect from damage a little -
stock bumper clearance while offroading
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Off Road
well looks like im gonna have to get at least a rear bumper sooner than later, last night when i was out doing some wheeling, and broke the top weld on the pass side do now the only thing holding on the bumper is the top weld on the pass side. so guess im gonna need to figure out something sooner than later. -
hey northguy, #2 just isnt gonna happen !!!!!!!lol figured out what my cooling problem was yesterday, i had taken the ac radiator thing off yesterday and found that even after i had sprayed the crap outta it it was still completely clogged with mud, it was also packed in between it and the radiator, and the rad was completelt packed with it. left the ac rad off and sprayed the rad down real well and now it runs like an iceberg, decided to leave my grill out for now since it makes cleaning the rad so much easier. to help keep it cool if it starts to run hotter i had wired the electric fan up to a toggle switch, so i got that and the stock engine controlled fan
-
ok, i was figuring it running a little hot was because of the motor pretty much being insulated from all that mud, i was having some running hot issues last night so i sprayed the hell outta the motor and rad, still seems to be runnign hot this morning siting right below the red. think i really need to pull out that ac rad, it seems like it holds in too much mud in it never really thought of it that way snowman, havent really owned many 4wd that i go mudding with so im new in a way to the whole more serious mudding thing
-
what do you guys do to at least keep the amount of mud down a little that gets on the motor. it seems every time i go out mudding my motor is just chunky with mud. i still haev the stock skid plate, and those stock little little things on each side as well but they dont seem to do much good. so what setups if any do you guys have

Distributors and caps
dragonwingsubaru replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
edrach you are right about them not interchangeing between the late ea71 and the ea82, the bolt holes are completely different(found that out the hard way) will start and run a ea71 though if you hold it -

dragonwingsubaru replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
actually the engines are completely different between the hatch and the wagon, i have an 87 motor in my 85 from a wagon, and have the 87 hatch and the hatch is a ea71 motor and the wagon is a ea82 motor, caps look almost identical since they both have nipendenso distys but the caps arent the same size, and both cars are carbed. had the same prob when i went to get a new cap and rotor for the ea82 told them 87 and still had the wrong 1 took my old cap and rotor in the next time to make sure snowman, yeah i have a hitachi from my 85 ea82motor and the sizing is also different, from the nippendenso on my 877 ea82 motor 85sub actually both the ones i have are push down rotors the hitachi 1 is much shorter height wise though -
i have the 4wd thing happen to me a cpl times too, seems to always be after i do some real bad bouncing around or get some air time. doesnt seems to be aproblem any other time, and i have never had it happen in 4 lo, just 4 high. and really that skid plate is kinda useless if you hit alot of the rutty stuff like i do, i have had mud packed in there so tight before that i have had to take a chisle to get it out. as for the squeaking check your ac compressor, mine started squeaking for a while after i hit some really big mud puddles

dragonwingsubaru replied to gunslinger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
got mine at autozone, made my engine run a little smoother but didnt do a damn thing for my TOD, after i put it in i let it sit for a little like it says i let it idle for about 20 mins till the smoke cloud stopped and shut it off, then when i drove off in it about an hour later it looked like the car was on fire for the first 2 miles, is that normal??? -
stock bumper clearance while offroading
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Off Road
man i had forgotten about this post! yeah im really needing to get some bumpers made, as well as a skidplate, that stock 1 sucks, too much mud gets packed in between it and the oilpan. i have finally managed to keep my bumper cover from falling off but now the prob is the whole think is sitting outta wack now because i broke the bottom welds on the bumper bracket. think ill design a few ideas and see what the local weldign shop would want to make them up for me -
center cap dissapointment :(
dragonwingsubaru replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i seen some pretty simular at walmart the other day for i think it was about $20, hubcaps have really gone down in price unless you are looking for the ghettofab spinner-hubs those are still rediculous, the super walmarts seem to have a better selection for pretty cheap. good luck and sorry if i knew someone might want them i would have hung onto them
