lifting bolt length question?
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
stock bolts shouldnt be a problem since the car is 100% rust free, though with my luck the things will probably give me a hard time. lol -

for the life of me i cant seem to find the thread that had the bolt lengths listed for putting a lift in. im only gonna be building a 2 inch lift but i need some idea of what bolt lengths im gonna need. i know if i get the 4 inch lift onfo all i should have to do for the most part is is subtract 2 and be about at what i need. in case anyone is wondering im building my lift from mostly 2 inch square steel thick wall tubing, and rienforceing each of the bolt areas with a-2 tool steel pieces(i believe that is what my boss said it was). i only have smaller pieces of the tool steel about big enough to rienforce the bolt areas where im using the tubeing at. thats why im not using it to do the lift itself. also have a buttload of small pieces of case hardened steel in case i will need those for anything. thanks in advance for any info

voltage drain problems
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yay i got it figured out. took off the black wire and covered it up, and took the red wire and hooked it to the black and white wire. now no buzzing and from what i can tell so far no voltage drain, and the voltage while it is running looks right. it was at about 12.5 or 13 now it looks closer to 14 or 15. so 1 problem fixed now maybe i might get around to getting some oil pressure lol -

hmmmm thanks cougar, ide prefer not to have to unhook and rehook up a wire every time i wanna drive it, im wondering if i might have hooked it up wrong on that plug. i have a brown, black, and red wire coming outta it and the brown 1 is hooked into the white and red 1. im wondering since its a larger gause wire on the plugin if the red 1 is the one that is supposed to hook to that. and the main battery 1 is the same hookup as on a sooby alt. i really dont wannna get another alt since the main reason i put this 1 on is because i didnt wanna buy 1. it does charge quite well it just is taking the charge away at the moment as well -

well its the wee am hours here and im busy working on it, didnt get the light yet but beenlooking it over top and bottom and after spending about an hour looking over the car top and bottom and got back to the engine bay i noticed a light buzzing from the alt,(gotta love the quiet at 230 am). anyways i took off both of the plug in wires 1 at a time and when i took off the black 1 from the alt going to the black and white 1 on the soob the buzzing stopped. so i guess i have an important question. do i need that wire hooked to anything , and if so where does it need to go to and where does it lead 2. or can i just leave it unhooked??? im hopeing some of you night owls can answer this quickly so i can get back out there and finish this, thanks in advance, and big ty for all the advice so far -

well i thought i had it figured but i guess it wasnt what i thought. drove the car to work last night after boostign it off and while i was sitting in it 4 a couple minutes before i went inside i happened to look at where i had my toggle switched hooked up in teh centerconsole and noticed that the power wire to the one i used to have running my extra electric fan was pulled off and sitting on the radio. so for good measure i yanked those wires out and also took the radio out to make sure to rule that out and it still drains. im gonna hopefully have a chance to pick up a test light tomorrow and try traceing it some more -

well to start the alt is from an 89 astrovan. and was bought brand new about 3 months before i scrapped it.right at the moment i dont have a ammeter, but could get 1 if nessesary. just a thought dont know if this would help someone figure this out, my stock alt was running high voltage for about 4 months before it finally died out. didnt burn and lights out but ther were bigtime brighter than they are now. ill let the battery get a little juice to it and try disconnecting the battery from the alt to see if that stops the problem. if that doesnt work i guess i could try out the fuses 1 by one and see if i get anywheres with it. im gonna put a pic up of the alt so you guys can see which 1 im working with and can tell me if i got it hooked up right. its a 3 wire and the red isnt being used on the clip piece, but the battery 1 is connected on the bolt spot on the back i got the black 1 going to the black 1 on the car, and the brown 1 going to the i believe the red and white 1(sorry not right in front of it at the sec) does that sound like its the right way??? -
recently i seem to have a bad voltage drain problem if i leave the sooby sitting for even a cpl hours its has to be jumped off to start. now i have a brand new battery and a 105 amp gm alt on it. the amt is still working fine i had it tested and if i go to start it up a few minutes after i shut it off it will start up just fine. im wanting to know where are the common shorting spots, especially problem spots if you offroad at pretty much stock height. i really need to get this fixed so i can drive the sooby again any help would be appreciated.

Cherry bomb muffler??
dragonwingsubaru replied to peterattray's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you are refering to the actual MUFFLER then it is called a turbo 2. im not sure if the glasspack 1 has any special name -
i have been thinking of something along the same general lines, except im looking more into a complete frame and drivetrain swap. havent done much research into it yet but i was thinking something along the lines of a s10 blazer 4wd chassis. im still up in the air about motor but im leaning more toward a 4.3 than a 350. i would say if you have the extra money and imaginaton then go for it, and if you break and of your remaining suby drivetrain then you probably need to replace it with something stronger!!!

need bracket info for gm alt swap
dragonwingsubaru replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well not that anyone even responded but nevermind, once i got the old alt out it only took me like 30 mins to get to other one in and all wired up, man i wish everything was that easy. it was almost as easy as just dropping in another stock 1 with crappy amps. oh yeah and i just kept the ac compressor in for now -
What exactly IS my car!
dragonwingsubaru replied to ckappler's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
around here they go by liters its a 1.8L, as for disty caps you need to just take it in with you since there are a cpl different types of distys that come in these motors. and as for axles i couldnt tell you since i havent had to replace any yet, -
well my stock alt finally crapped out, and rather that buy a new 1 i just decided to put on my gm 1 that i have sitting around since it was only 6 months old when i pulled it off the van. now my question is does anyone have any pics of there bracket setup on an ea82?? im planning on pulling out my ac compressor when i do this so i will have the extra space. also i know that you cant see what alt i have right now but i also need some ideas on what wires to run where on it. and yes i still have the plug in piece that goes with the alt. btw the alt has 3 wires on the plugin if that helps limit it down thanks in advance

man, sorry i had done forgot all about snaping that pic for you ill try to get it taken tomorrow afternoon before i go to work and post it in this thread for you. yeah the one i have bends below that sheetmetal before it curves up, and it was actually a very sturdy setup from my experience towing my 4x8 trailer behind it when i had it(the hatch) -

yes the class rating it just saying how much weight it can handle. class 1 being the weakest and class 3 being the strongest. -

i have 1 from the hatch i used to have ill try to get a pic tomorrow of it. it bolts to the bumper then curves up to the bottom of the hatch part and bolts up there,, the 1 i have was made by reese, think its a class 1 maybe 2 though -
didnt happen to take my camera with me but me and my kids had a blast, i would say the trail hadnt been used in about 20 years since most of the trail was grown up pretty tall. only made it about a 1/2 mile in though before i just started to get tired of running over trees. that and it was gettign real tuff to manuver around the trees too thick to go over. now before any of you guys jump me about offroading like this let me tell you this was in my backyard, since part of my property goes part way up the side of star mountian.think i might check out the other 67 acres i got across the street to see if there are any good wheeling spots that aren't as grown up as the 1 on the house side of the property. on the annoying side though this little adventure did cost me a tire since apparently i ran over something that busted a steel belt in it.

well about 2 months ago i bought a set of trooper rims and drilled them out to fit my sooby pattern, the thread showing them is probably on page 10 or so by now.anyways i have only had them on for maybe a cpl days worth of time because of tire fitment issues and have already noticed they seem to be rubbing pretty badly on the studs. could this be because center is about an 1/8 inch or so bigger then the sooby center?? im begining to wonder if it will even be safe to keep running these rims once i get the the tire fit issues takes care of.
