no rust is almost impossible around here. and I doubt the mileage is that low. But otherwise it might meet the criteria. I agree that I probably wouldn't pay more than $2k for a brat. Its not that they arent worth it in some cases, its that I don't want one that nice because I don't want to feel bad about driving it on the beach, letting the dog ride in it, towing a hobie with it and putting some miles on it.

free 82 GL come and get it!
Jack in Norfolk replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's kind of what I had in mind. There is one around here that already has the 5 speed. The think is, I heard that dropping in the ea81t isn't as easy as it sounds. Also, how easy is it to find an ea81t that isn't shredded? WOuld I have to get it from CCR? Do they even have them? The car here has been sitting outside a junkyard for over a year with no passenger front window so who knows how much watter is under the carpet rusting out the floorboard? I keep thinking about trying to do something with it though. Plus there are some nice alloys nearby. -
I have seen them go for that much on ebay and I know some of you have Brats that are worth the money, but I'm wondering how to determine when its worth paying this much. There is one here in town. I have heard the guy wants $3500 for it. Its nice. It has these wheels which I had never seen before. it has the seats. Its not a turbo. It has t tops. Looks clean and straight. No obvious rust. There are a lot of unknown variables (mileage, if it runs or not, interior condition, etc...) its inside a fenced in yard and I have only seen it in the light once. I'm pretty sure its a 1983 Thanks for the info. -Jack

syncro westy engine swap?
Jack in Norfolk replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Vanagon Conversion Discussion
I didn't know that they were even available for 4 years. I thought it was like 1 or something. I have only seen that one locally. I saw a few in Seattle and just assumed that some came down from Canada. -

How is he getting 120 hp from a naturally aspirated ea81? is he using those dual ported airplane heads? Bored over? big cams? do tell! -
What if you use the 87 but then add a bottle of octane booster? I'm not sure about the ecconomics of this (cost of octane booster) but it seems like it could work. My dad has to run 93 in his Lexus and hates to pay for it. My mechaninc was telling me that if he ran 87 in the Lex it would be a little rough for about the first 100 miles but then the computer would "learn" to function properly on 87. But as mentioned in this post, there would be a loss in performance. My mechanic said it would probably not even be noticable. I wonder if this applies to subes as well.....

Worst color?
Jack in Norfolk replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Actually that is a really nice looking car! The other maroon "rule beater" is the ea82 turbo GL10 out west that I have seen pics of. He's got "motion" rims and it looks great. Oh, and Bucky 92's coupe. It could be poo-brown with vomit green polka dots and it would still be pretty. -

I kind of like the body. I still havent gotten a definate answer as to whether they sold ea81 turbo sedans in the states or not. That would be pretty awesome. Sako; maybe you should take up a collection. Throw a keg party and charge admission..... Just an idea. -

I'm not a fan of burgandy/maroon on any car. It doesn't look any worse on a subaru than it does on any other. But yeah, its pretty bad. I too kinda like the light metallic green but maybe its cuz I had never seen it until quite recently. My girlfriend says her sister had an old sube (not sure what kind or how old) that was kind of a dark greenish blue. I have pointed out several subes and said "is that it?" and she always says no. It could have been custom painted by a previous owner or it could be that I just haven;t seen one yet. -

2 tone paint
Jack in Norfolk replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
huh, I must have looked at the wrong page. I didn't see any for the wagons. Or was it just that the 2 tone was only offered on wagons after 89? I didn;t look at the newer brochures. Thanks. -
What would you pay for this?
Jack in Norfolk replied to Subieguy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm a big fan of the ea82 wagons, but even so, I know that they arent real hard to find and its not like its a brat or something. I can't see why someone would pay $450 for that one when there are better ones for less. I think it would be awesome if you gott it and fixed it, but you shouldn't have to pay much if anything for it. Stick to your guns. Either he'll get in touch with reality or you'll find something better. Getting emotionally attached to cars can be expensive. -
I love going to junk yards and just looking around. You get a chance to stop and check out so many different types of cars. You can look at the engines and the interiors and what wheels they had and nobody hassles you. One unsafe thing around here is that many of the junk yards are in the Great Dismal Swamp. Its a really environmentally significant wetland and the water table is getting screwed up because of all of the petrolium runoff from the junkyards. The landfills nearby don't help things either.
