  1. Alright, well i JUST did this in my impreza so i'll give you the lowdown. You yank the exhaust (from the block, or just after the header) (don't forget the 02-sensor connector) Pull down some heat shields Yank off the drive-shaft cover thing (skidplate-esk... has 6 bolts, back by the rear diff) pull the drive shaft & center bearing while you've been doing this, you should have been draining the ATF out of the tranny it also helps to have the car about 3ft in the air. now support the buttom of the tranny (if you support it on the pan, make SURE you use some sort of force distribution device (aka 2x4), as to not dent/crush it). once the tranny is supported, pull off the tranny mounts from the car, and the tranny. There is a temp sensor on the right hand side of the read extension housing (right side if you're under the car, looking towards the front) pull that sensor out, lower the tranny a little (but not all the way, you don't want to piss-off the engine mounts that much.) now start pulling out the bolts that hold on the rear extension housing, they're all 12mm, and i think there's 12-14 of them. Lots of ATF will come out there, so make sur eyou have something in under there to catch it. To get the rear housing off, it can be tricky, you can try to hammer a screw driver into the seem between both parts, just don't hammer INTO the tranny (go along the edges). once you get the rear part loose start pulling it out.... STOP! make sure you dis-connect the duty-c solenoid wire,. Ok, now pull it off, watch out it's sort of heavy. make sure you don't drop any of the loose bearings or anything into the drain pan... If the shaft that goes into the clutch packs doesn't come out, pull that sucker right out, because you're going to need to do it anyhow later on. there is a bearing between the shaft and the inside of the clutch area, so you can drop it easily. So, now you have it out, Yank the solenoid, and the thing under the solenoid (don't break/bend the tube going into the bottom valve assy), and you'll need a new gasket for the bottom of the valve assy. So put in the new parts, make sure you get the gasket in there, and that you ground the solenoid. Now for the fun part, that shaft you pulled out of the tranny has to go back into the rear extension housing. i found that that's the easiest way to do this is to get a really small flat head screw driver, and line up all of the clutch plates. Once you get them all perfectly lined up, put the bearing in the rear housing part, and then carefully lower the shaft into it, it might take you a few times to make sure it is FULLY seated (read: too me 5+ hours, took girlfriend 2 times... grrr....) So now that you have that shaft in, DO NOT TAKE IT OUT!!! (or else you'll have to re-do it.) So now clean up all the mating surfaces real nice, and put some copper rtv on the rear extension housing part. Now you can shove the rear housing back into the tranny, make sure you connect the solenoid wire, and get all the park stuff in sync. now, slam that rear housing back onto the tranny, MAKE SURE you don't pinch the wire!!! It's also a pain to get the gears to line up, put the tranny in neutral, and start hammering the the back end of extension housing, until its flush. Now you can throw all of those bolts back on there, and all of the other junk that goes under the car... AND AWAY YOU GO!! ish or something.. that's about it. Pics of the inside of the tranny, and stuff. http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/AgentBCOC/4eat/ I got my parts from Jamie at geniunesubiparts (not exactly how it's spelled), i think the solenoid was 68 bucks, and the gasket.. well i ordered the wrong part, the oil seal is the thing in the back, the gasket.. well you can have them look it up... Oh yeah, the grooves in the drive drum there, you can use a file to flatten them out if you can't find a donar shaft.

I've towed alot of trailers w/ my impreza, and i'll admit, not all of them were 'safe' loads, but if you're just going down the road.. and you don't care about your transmission, go for it But.. i wouldn't suggest it... I usually trucked my small trailer back & forth to school, just have to drive slower, plan way ahead, and be prepared to see the rev's fly
  3. WOOHOO!!! Well yesterday, the gang an i brought our motorcycles back up to NH for the winter, and while we were at it we attacked the Green subaru. We got the transmission all back together (New Duty C & gadgets), driveshaft in, tranny all mounted up, exhaust back in place, and a new battery in place, and she fired right up!!! The EJ22 sounds just like new! (or at least like what it sounded like when i put it in the barn). No strange noises out of the tranny now, and AWD seems to work! All it needs now is some fresh oil & filter, some air in the tires, some RTV in the exhaust, and she should be ready to be inspected, registered, and ready to rock! woohoO! Next time i'm up in NH i'm going to have to put the roof racks back on, that thing just looks naked without anything on the roof... again, woohoo! it's ready to roll!!

  5. Alloys + Offroading = Check your lugs OFTEN! went wheelin' one day... heading back i had this 'clunk... clunk' noise in the back.... guess what... the lugs loosened up. I romp'd through some cold water & stuff, so i'm guessing the thermal expansion/contraction did it.
  6. I want to put a gas turbine in my roo'.... Sure, it takes a few seconds to kick in when you hit the gas... but when she kicks in.. hold on!!! You could run a pto straight off of it.... just like the JSF....

I'm tellin' you, roof mounted lights rock!! and when i had lights on my front (stock) bumper on the impreza, i drilled a hole through the plastic & foam, and put a big plate w/ a hole in it on the bottom side (as a huge washer). (The KC's used to be on the stock bumper, seen below) Oh how i miss haveing that car running... :-\
  8. 10awg insustrial plasma cutter grounding wire (rubber coated), velco straps ever foot or so on the drivers side roof rail (i wanted them quick-on/off), down into the hatch fromthe end of the roof rail (it gets pinched so you need good wire, rubber coated), once it's into the hatch area, under the piston there's a trailer wiring harness (going to make it two, to pass more current), the other half of the wiring goes in through the brake light gasket, runs back up the back pillar, across the roof, down the a-pillar, down to the relay/switch mechanism, from there it busts through the side firewall gasket (you have to take the fender off to get all of that stuff), then along w/ all the other wires that go through, over to the battery/fusebox area. hope that makes sense and yes, it's ALOT of wire, that's why you use use as LEAST 10awg

I've heard about it happening that soon... but it's usually just little kiddies' who don't know how to drive stick.. revin' it up to ~ 6 grand then dumping the clutch I've also heard of it happening under 'normal' driving conditions just because the driver isn't used to the clutch action, i've found that the new roo's clutches are pretty tight, and have a paper thin engagement. But, also manufacturing defect is completely reasonable too.

I used to do the whole 4ft breaker bar thing... ended up breaking alot of bars and sockets... whenever i need it done i just roll up to a local shop, and ask them nicely to throw their 800ftlb impact gun on it for a second, and the zip it back on... that way they do all the hard work, and when you get home, you can just pop it off yeah yeah, i'm lazy in my old age

    You can do alot in a stock, or slightly lifted roo'... but know it does have limitations!!!

    Lift it to the sky Tires, biger Skidplate x alot Throw a d/r tranny in there maybe even a t-case (depending on how hard core you want to be) bumpers winch lights sub frame rock rails mattracks....... how deep does your wallet go? lol

I'll get right on that... once i put the transmission back in it... and yeah, the plastic bumper covers don't last very long if you play hard... at one point mine was held on by just zipties... and would flap at speed.. so i fixed the problem and 700 bucks.. that's better than what mudrat wanted. but.. to give you some prospective, when i built it 2 years ago(ish) the steel cost me $117 even. And a whooolllee lot of time designing/calculating/building You've gotta' keep those lights up high, so you don't break them, the roof is a good place
