A major break through (accidental) in car care!
mtsmiths replied to mtsmiths's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf anything, the car dried even fasater than normal. You can see the water sheet off with no droplets left behind. I was amazed. And yes, even on the black Barbie jeep.

A major break through (accidental) in car care!
I was preparing to wash The Pretty One's 'new' '06 Atlantic blue Outback yesterday afternoon. After squirting the usual dish soap and adding warm water to the bucket; I was led to add a couple cap-fulls of 'Spray-n-Wash' to the mix (hey, the bottle was staring me in the face on the garage shelf over the washer/dryer). WOW! A no-wipe, perfectly spot-free car. To test the concoction, I washed the Barbie jeep, which being black is a notorious spotter. Same results. Try it, you'll like it.

Forester Headrest
mtsmiths replied to hvnbnd's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXTook the car to Subaru on warranty repair yesterday. All fixed. So, the solution to the late model headrest quandry is: 1. Locate headrests from an '05 or earlier car with matching upholstry. 2. Remove your headrest, and carefully pry out the adjustment bushings/ locking tabs (one per seat). If you break one you can order a new one, they are available in all colors. 3. Reverse the locking bushing to place thte tab on the correct side of the headrest post (the side with the notches). 4. Insert the replacement headrests ... done. Alternately, grind new notches into the post on the correct side. I would make the new notches between the existing ones so as to not weaken the post. You can now relax in the front seat without having your chin touch your chest.

Should I buy an extended warranty?
mtsmiths replied to CPAScott's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhat I told my wife. If you do decide to purchase warranty insurance buy ONLY a Subaru policy. Off-side warranty underwriters are about as reliable as inner-city pawn shops.

Liking the New Gen Car Already

new gen after market sunroofs?
mtsmiths replied to El Toro's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've installed several aftermarket sunroofs in various cars. I believe that the roof of the century series is wa-aaa-y too curved to accept an off-the-shelf flat sunroof. I think (although I've never been a professional body man, nor played one on TV) that you have only two viable options: 1. Cut the entire forward roof section out of an '00 - 04 wagon and take the headliner/bezels too and graft it into your car. VERY exspensive, and if done wrong an awful mess forever. 2. Sell your current wagon and buy one with a sunroof.

Door glass hangs out too far on '01 Imprezza
mtsmiths replied to JM1NA's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOr, just grab the outside rearview mirror housings and gently bend 'em in toward the car. This is the 'approved' fix for door seal whistling. Works too, I was a hero in Hawaii when I fixed the noise on my BIL's Forester.

Forester Headrest
mtsmiths replied to hvnbnd's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXInstant follow-up: The local Subaru dealer just called me and they got the parts to make the '05 headrests work correctly in the '06. Here's the scoop. You can (sometimes) dig the plastic bushings and locking tabs out of the seatback and just turn 'em around and snap 'em back in. They ordered new ones 'cause they sometimes break when you're trying to get them out. So to put earlier headrests in just replace the bushings and snaps turned around the other way. Don't know the cost, this is a warranty job. Guess I won't be grinding the posts after all.

Forester Headrest

gun rack for 1997 obw
mtsmiths replied to 1997outback's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI like the idea of bolting a generic gunrack to a dog fence between the back seats and the 'wayback'. If you need (or want) something more permanene, and don't mind drilling a few holes, I've seen stationwagon gun racks mounted to the wayback side window frames, so that the guns are parallel to the side of the car.

mtsmiths replied to hvnbnd's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe interchange, however the adjustment detents are on the opposite side of the posts, so there is no longer a height adjustment, they all the way down all the time ... endovit.

2006 'mystery fluid' leak?
mtsmiths replied to mtsmiths's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSubaru dealer called and said the brakes are fine, the drips are from oil picked up from road work. So, why then do I have brake fluid on my garage floor and a reseviour 1/3 empty?

anybody ever put a wagon rear door on a hatch?
Well, could you splice a wagon greenhouse/tailgate onto a hatch from the 'B' pillar back? Mind you that comment is made with no knowledge of the actual measurements.

2006 'mystery fluid' leak?
mtsmiths replied to mtsmiths's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBrake fluid ... sure don't smell like it usted to. Resevior was already down to the minimum mark. Dropped it off at the dealer, still under warranty with only 25,000 miles on it. Prolly kicked up a rock with all the highway construction around here this summer.

2006 'mystery fluid' leak?
The Pretty One left for work early this am. WHen I went out to drag the garbage can up the hill I noticed a few drops of what I assumed to be water on the garage floor. No overnight puddle, just one drop every foot or so the length of the garage, then no more in the driveway. Came home at 6:00 ... still there, even after 100 deg heat all afternoon (prolly higher in the garage). Clear, slightly oily, viscous enough to retain a bead after all day, slightly acidic on the tounge and very salty, no metallic taste (yeah I'm old school, when in doubt, 'taste test' ). Right along the driver's side tire line. No idea at all whatthehell it is.

Trip report, solo (thank GOD for audiobooks!) Whitefish > Pt. Ludlow > Whitefish over the weekend. Overall trip average 30.6mpg in the '06 Outback. Pretty much 75 with A/C on for the I-90 portion. BTW, whatthehell wa going on on Snoqualimie Pass yesterday afternoon? From the summit east to Ellensburg the west-bound lane was one continual 30 mile long PARKING LOT. Not stop-&-go, just all lanes not moving at all. No lights, sirens, helicopters or emergency vehicles noted, nothin' in the news today.

Philosophical thread- how do you know?
mtsmiths replied to badjer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell, look at it this way, since you like the car: $350.00 recent expenditure, $500.00 fix A/C, $250.00 new tires. That totals $1,100.00. Can you get an anywhere comparable car for $1,100 ... probably not. If you get a comparable car, how many months payments would equal $1,100 ... and for how long after that amount is paid out will the payments continue. Also, if you buy a NEW car, what about insurance cost increase. Click & Clack always claim it's cheaper to and drive than to replace. If you think about new (or decent used) car payments you're looking at a minimum expense of $3,000 and up ... maybe WAY up. That's a LOT of repairs. If you like it keep it IMNSHO.
