  1. My '87 was no louder with the resonator removed and a straight pipe than our other '87 was with a full system. Just a different tone.
  2. If you're afraid of installing a 'real' block heater you can use the glue-on kind. You really reeeeelly have to get the oil pan clean before installing them. I've got one on my '95 Legacy and it works as well as the in-block one I had on my '87 GL. After I installed it I stuck a couple of layers of that super-sticky aluminum tape over it as a reflector and rock protector. They're about $15.00 at NAPA, plug it in and leave it all night, only draws 40watts. I'd originally bought it to put on my airplane, but am working on the plane in the warm garage while the Subaru freezes outside (minus 9 yesterday am, had heat within a long block from my house).
  3. Trexsel, you'll prolly never solve the leaky headlight. Those of us who have suffred from this problem (and there are many) have tried everything from silicon to bear grease, with little success. Use the search function to find attempts. Advertise on the board Marketplace for the exact light unit you need. Someone will have or find it, and make you a good deal ... we all feel your pain.
  4. Second that ... sounds like condensation. Never let your tank get below 1/2 full in winter. Check posts for additive warnings tho. I think there have been some messages that some 'dry gas' can harm Subie injector systems. We're not allowed to add de-icers to our county vehicles for that reason.
  5. I cut the resonator off my '87 when the rear pipe was rusted and straight piped it out. Never had any issues for the next 50,000 + miles over 3 years.
  6. All I ever had to do in our '87 GL was back off the gas and shift it out ... wet, dry, snow, gravel, grass, pavement, it never seemed to matter.
  7. Our '00 Legacy has over 150,000 miles. Other than routine maintenance (including T-belts and front case work) our only repair was a right front wheel bearing, and a TSB O2 sensor replacement (it didn't work, we still have a persistant CEL, but it runs great). My '95 has 130,000, with no known problems. Our '87s ran to 180,000 and 212,000 and when we sold them were going strong. I drove my '87 from Montana to Maryland and back after it had passed 200,000 at 70-80 mph the whole way (54 hours MT>MD).
  8. Are they gonna sell? Bleeeecccchhhh, not to this consumer they're not. Can you say Edsel?
  9. We put it on our '00 Legacy. THe warranty wasn't the issue, we're alread over 150,000. Can't hurt.
  10. Occupado, if you think you need the extra 2"-3" or so of ground clearance go for the Outback. If you want really great handling, get the Legacy not the Outback. We have two Legacy wagons, a '95 and a '00, both handle like they are on rails on dry pavement. The '00 has very good passing and response for a non-turbo, the 2.2 is a bit anemic. I've only driven an Ourtback once, on dry pavement. I told my wife I felt like I was driving a Buick. BTW, in our experience (which includes owning five Subarus since 1982, three of which were MTs) the automatic AWD is far superior in snow and ice than the manual. Our driveway is our benchmark, if we would stop in the middle with a MT we would have to back down and start over; with the AT after a stop we just drive on.
  11. Let me know if you want any info on da bes places fo go be touris'. Capt. Cook is the onliest place I've swum with dolphins, but I've been the water with whales in North Kohala. Sweet 82 is right about the Turtles, but there's are also places on the south coast too. There's a bay down by South Point where the water is warmed by the volcano and it's a major turtle egg laying area.

You guys beat me to it. I heard this on the way home last night and was going to inquie if Greg had been a board member. What a waste.
  13. When you guys are doing mods like this (and similar) look in the auto store for Fiberglas mix, it's chopped mill fiber in resin. You add the catylist (like Bondo) and mix it and apply it in layers ... much stronger and can be blended to anything. I think there's even a Bondo brand version of the stuff. Keep your cheese grater handy and smooth it while it's partially gone off (cheese hard) and you'll save hours of sanding and blending edges. I like to use just the rasp blade without the handle, that way I can bend and flex it to fit curves. I just did the nose bowl of my airplane this way. I had to remove a HUGE airscoop for the oil cooler I relocated and smooth in the lower chin of the bowl.
  14. Pahoa town, eh. Watch out for da mokes brah, some dem blalahs no li' haoles. An no mess wit Madam Pele. Make sure you go visit the current outflow of lava into the sea, spectacular.
  15. Outback 97 beat me to it. Tire pressure ... I've had the whole wayback of my '95 Leg loaded to the top of the windows with firewood, and it still felt stable (I run 38 lbs).
  16. Whyn't you go to a tire store, put it on the lift and put it in gear? Not as much fun, but you could then get an 'expert opinion' statement that the AWD system has failed, to use against the shipper if you need it.
  17. Hmmm, interesting thought. I wonder how it would read from: wet pavement, grass, Black Ice, a foot of fresh unplowed NW powder (aka Montana Peruvian Flake), one of those 'humming' bridges that you can see through to the water?
  18. Well, Jim Davis, whether you speeding or blocking traffic (so long as you're in the right lane) welcome to the board. Nice to see another Montana member.BTW, what's with all the hot weather in GF this winter? You guys got a permanent Chinook, or what?
  19. Well, I can verify that the connectors DO look just like that. I just replaced a bulb in my '95. The connector branched off a crossover wire behind the fascia, easily accessible thru the hole after I removed the unit from the bumper. I would think that it would be prewired, otherwise it would be a VERY expensive accessory. I should think that you would just have to remove the hole filler in the light hole and everything should be under there.
  20. If they told you you needed repairs because your rotors were 'rusted' they were out-and-out- trying to cheat you. All rotors show rust, usually overnight. Just drive and the pads will clean them. Stay away from them and (not that it will do any good) report them to SOA.
  21. Well Steve, thanks for the compliment 'bout us drivers up here in Montana. You think SLC is bad, try driving in 'The Aloha State'. Not only plenny rude, but l-o-u-s-y drivers. Your line about the 500 miles cracked me up. Once I took off in a company truck from Kalispell, MT and drove straight through to El Paso, TX. I totally freaked out the office manager when I called back and reported arriving. After that, they allus insisted I have a co-driver on long trips. If you ever plan a Glacier NP trip let us know up here along the High Line.
  22. Nicky, not any more, but I lived on the Big Island for almost twenty years, all up and down the Kona and South Kohala coast. Mo bettah you like I can use da fingers fo make pigeon? pm me on the side and I can fill you in.
