Watch the bay of e, and see how many Subarus turn up cheap in Florida. Most are automatics tho, 'cause it's geezers retiring and realizing they no longer need AWD. AWD 'Roos are also really expensive in Montana, I had to go to Chicago to get a reasonable deal (found it on this board). It came with a minimum of salt damage. My next door neighbor offered me two grand over what I paid for it the day I got it home.

We've had our 2000 since 11/01, when we bought it with 99,850 miles already on it (in thirteen months). We got a killer deal 'cause the lot couldn't move it. We're now at 160,000+ miles, and the only non-sched repair was a front wheel bearing. This winter we drove to Polebridge, MT (over 30 miles) through 18" of unplowed snow. The guy at the general store couldn't believe it. He asked "Did the state plow already?" (it was still snowing like crazy). Now my wife want's it lifted 3", to make it easier to get in and out of ... or, she said I 'could' just buy her a new Outback. I drive a '95 Legacy I bought off the board from Chicago. Had it up to 105 mph in Wyoming (about 03:00 hrs on I-90) and it was as smooth as butter, and at that speed felt like it was nailed to the road ... no aero-float at all. It's got about 135,000 and runs like a new car. We were driving '87 GL wagons before, and in some ways I miss the rough & tumble of the 'Jap tractors', but nothing beats the AWD system and the comfort of modern Subarus for every day driving.

Dumb Idea?
mtsmiths replied to JT95's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
No - GOOD idea. Been done by a couple members and contemplated by several more, including myself. Problem is, I would have to do the roll on kind, which would be OK, 'cept it comes on black only, and it would be really overpowering on the Forest Mist of my wife's Legacy. Go for it, and post pics. -
Travis, don't feel like an idiot ... the cooling system is problematic. There is evidence that many (if not most) of the later model 2.5 HG issues are the result of improper air bubble expulsion creating heat stress. Judging by the posts, many of these errors were committed by Subaru Service Centers.

I got it, I got it! Go to the ofice supply stor and get a sheet of small white rub-on letters. Opposite the ON position of the switch apply the following: D/L. Show the inspector that with the swith in the 'Day Light' position, the lights are on as soon as the ingition is turned on. Make sure the lights are on low beam, when you do this. VOILA!
-
Crikies, just put the headlights in the ON position. They turn on and off with the ignition. OH, I forgot 'Canada'. Maybe someone can explain how to wire them so the lights are in the ON position, while the switch indicates OFF. Geeze, it's as bad as Hawaii up there. I DO appreciate the 2-2-2s and Vegemite tho'.

Today I dropped off my Subaru alloys ('95 Leg) at the local 'STAT' franchise. They will soda blast them next time they're running the machine for $50.00 for all four wheels. Then I'll give them a couple coats of semi-gloss clear poly and call it good.

Agreed, MY 2000. Our 2000 Legacy AT is at 160,000 with one bad wheel bearing being the entire repairs to date. There is some anecdotal evidence that many (if not all) HG problems originate with improper refilling after cooling system work, and resultant air bubbles causing heat stress. There's an analysis done concerning Subaru Aero engines to that effect somewhere in the sub-sub-sub-sub basement.

Brain, MT driving is real simple: 1. NEVER pull out in front of a logging truck. 2. Deer always have the right-of-way. 3. When driving 90+ on the interstate stay in the right lane so the Highway Patrol can pass you safely. 4. PASS the damn snowplow, you can't see diddley behind him, that's what you have AWD for! 5. Keep the beer in the cup holder directly in front of the air cond. vent, it gets warm in your crotch ... 'sides it's still legal here.

What would one get with just the OB struts, or will that work? Ballpark cost? My wife wan't her legacy raised to make it easier to get in and out (old back injury). THANX, Smitty
-
Yes! And you did that how? Our '00 Legacy is about due for struts, and we may as well .... after all, The Pretty One did say she liked her friends Outback 'cause it was easier to get in and out of then her Legacy.

We've discovered that the box store and Ace keys bend in the tailgate lock. We get lots of dirt and dust and the locks tend to get dirty during winter. Only the dealer keys have a thick enough shank to take the twist. I called in advance and the dealer had a key ready when The Pretty One came to the parts dept. Price was a couple bucks more than WallyWorld, but that key only lasted three days.

"Automatic Transmission Models All-Wheel Drive vehicles cannot be towed with any wheels on the ground. The vehicle can only be towed on a trailer with all four wheels off the ground and the transmission in park. Front-Wheel Drive vehicles can be towed with front wheels off the ground or all four wheels off the ground and transmission in park." Well Subarunation, this cut-n-paste from Subaru's own site is pretty definitive. Note that is says CANNOT, not 'may not', not 'should not'. In technical language this word means what it says. It doesn't mean "do not tow over one point five miles", or, "do not tow over 80 miles per hour ... it means CAN NOT be towed. I still advise Linda to asssume they have toasted her AWD, and let them prove otherwise. Maybe she DID get lucky, but why take the chance and allow a mistake to go unresolved at HER expense. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that people aren't out to get you.

AW heck karinvail, you can do that safely ... just fill the engine with water! See, easy, no fire factor now.
