It's a very quiet tapping, barely audible (in fact my wife swears SHE can't hear it). Ours lasts about two minutes and never comes back all day. We bought the car with 100,000 miles on it (at 13 months old) and now have 140,000 and it hasn't gotten any worse. Also NO signs of head gasket or auto tranny probs. I believe this is the best car I've ever owned, and that is WELL over the one hundred mark.

There are a bunch of cars out there that didn't get enough underbody paint near the rear suspension. All they're gonna do is rattlecan around the rear strut areas (I think). My tire shop checked ours and said there is no sign of any defeciency or rust (NW Montana). No salt, but that liquid stuff (which is probably a different salt in suspension). Anyhow, I wouldn't worry about it, do it if it makes you feel better.

And is worth no more than the company underwriting it. How many miles is the factory warranty, and how many miles further does the policy extend it. Never mind the time, you'll eat up the miles lo-o-oong before then. I wouldn't touch it unless it was DIRECTLY from SOA. If it's from a third party forget it. Remember too, that you are probably going to FINANCE that insurance policy, so you're going to pay interest in it too! I would look at the difference in monthly payment with and without the policy, tell the daler thanks but no thanks and bank that amount each month into a dedicated 'uh-oh' savings account. I'd bet that by the time you ever need the policy you'll have MORE than a thousand bucks in the kitty, and it will be YOUR money, not the finance company's. 'Sides, from my long experience with 'Roos, you're never gonna need it anyhow. Statistically, Extended Warranties suck!

Most of the available shade trees with a low horizontal branch strong enough for a pully were pepper trees. The best pepper tree machanics were always the old Mexicans.

One finger, 1/2" - 3/4" deflection. Them ol' pepper tree mechanics wuz smart.

We've had three manual tranny Subarus, and one auto. Never had any trouble with any, engines either for that matter. Prolly got a quarter million Subie miles under our collective butts, over the cars and years. IMHO there isn't pissant's difference between a modern auto and a manual, unless you are driving them so hard you're gonna break something anyhow. For 'normal', 'sane' driving (not that I'm against abnormal and insane driving, in the right time & place and if you are willing to take the blame for what you break) I think the auto is better. After six years of driving in Montana winter conditions I KNOW it's damnwell better in snow. That's MY opinion and I'm sticking to it!

or really NEED an extra 2" of ground clearance, get a Legacy. We have a 2000, and it's the best handling ground hugging car I have ever driven (and that's a LOT of cars). As for the ground clearance, we live in NW Montana and I have driven this car at 50 mph in 8" of unplowed snow with no problems except the windshield wipers trying to keep up with the snow coming back on the windshield. Save a few thousand $$$ and get a Legacy trimmed out the way YOU want it, not the GM styling studio.

I was taught that you should be able to deflect the fan belt 1/2" - 3/4" using one finger ... then it was right. 'Course back then Fuji Heavy Industries was still digging out from the rubble left by B-29s, so who knows now!

Quaker 10/30 and MMO in the '00 (145,000 miles). No switching around, oil and filter changes at 4,000. Both engines run dead quiet ('cept the mild piston slap when starting the 2.5L, and five seconds of starting lifter rattle in the GL). Oil is prolly leaking down out of the galleries overnight in Klack. Course, I DO have the advantage of a heated garage, which I believe does more to keep a northern states engine alive than anything!

I took the battery out and washed it, I saw no sign of cracks. The battery is less than a year old. Doesn't seem to use abnormal amounts of electrolyte either.

The positive terminal of our '00 keeps oxiding up. In spite of a felt collar and dielectric grease it develops a corrosion node the size of a golf ball in about four weeks. The OEM clamp actually corroded away, and I replaced it with a lead universal clamp, cleaned everything and prepped it in mid September. Yesterday The Pretty One needed a jump after listening to the radio for 1/2 hour while parked. This was after two hours of high speed driving, so the connection was obviously bad enough to stop the juice. What's going on; in the dim recess of my aging brain I seem to remember that this is a sign of overcharging? No other symptoms.
