  1. Will, Do they make these rack bushings for a Justy? My 88 Justy rack is a rear steer bolted to the firewall (The bushings look like the round one pictured in the thread). Will the EA 82 bushings work?? How can I get them? Just curious?? Jim
  2. Mick, Since you are the sticker guy, you may be interested in an item I found last week. While at the JY I checked the glovebox of an 86 fwd Gl 4 door. Inside I found an unused "Air Conditioned by Subaru" circular sticker in mint cond. The one that has a front grill shot of an EA82 with sun and snowflakes in the background. It sticks to the inside of the glass. Is this a rare piece? Is there a market out there for a reproduction? If so, I would be willing to lend it out to you so you could reproduce it for the folks who may want or need one. If interested PM me and we'll talk Jim
  3. Put me down for 2!!! Will they be a dual bolt pattern? (5 for a Grant wheel and 6 for a Momo and Sparco) If so that would be great! Keep us posted.
  4. I have read this thread from start to finish and it made me sick! There are a lot of vo-cat schools out there with no certifications such as NATEF or ASE. There is no sanctioning body to guide or police them! They have no set guidelines on what is being tought, How it's being tought, and by whom. I have some experience in this area as I hold an Associates degree in Auto Tech, I am an ASE 3 time recertified Master Tech with 22 years of automotive experience on many different makes of vehicles. The position I have held for the past 12 years requires this, for I am a automotive instructor @ CPCC in Charlotte NC. At my school we have 3 manufacturer based programs (GM, Toyota, And DaimlerChrysler) I am the program coordinator for the latter mentioned. The instructors I work with are all seasoned car guys with credentials that are equal to or surpass my own. (I'm only 41...still just a kid!) I have taught many classes in many areas of automotive repair and have worked on many student/family projects. Before I say yes to a project I have to ask myself these ??? 1) Will this project be benificial to the students and my class? 2) Is this vehicle a good candidate for repair? (Age, Condition, and Parts availability play a large part.) 3) Can the student or students handle the project with their current level of expertise? 4) Does the owner of the vehicle "Fully" understand that the work will be done by students who are "Learning" how to repair vehicles. They will be monitored and assisted by the instructor but, the "Hands On" work will be done by students and checked by the instructor but, "sometimes" a problem can arise. (This is a big one! All folks want the free labor but, some don't want to assume any risk!) 5) Lastly..If I say yes to the 1st 4 questions...I ask myself ...Can I reasonably expect that at the end of the project "ALL" parties involved will walk away reasonably satisfied. If I answer NO to any of the above questions....It don't come through the door!!! My advise.....Get the Brat out of there ASAP! The instructor is not interested in fixing it! I would also get your boyfriends son out of that program...he could do alot better at an accredited auto tech school! PS If you look in the USMB photo gallery under Viehmann you will see my Justy...My students did a clutch job and Main/rod bearings on that car 2 years ago. There are real good auto schools and instructors out there...the trick is to find them!! Good Luck!! Jim Viehmann CPCC
  5. Got my stickers today and man..They look great!!! Thanks Mick! You did a great job on them. JimV.
  6. Hi, I read your post a couple of times and am a bit confused on your discription of the problem but, I'm gonna give it a shot! You say the car quit moving and can't be pushed (I am taking for granted that the car was in neutral-not in gear when you tried to push it) You mention that you jacked it up to see if the axles turned, try this trick...(With the wheels off the ground and engine running get a buddy to shift the car into first gear and let out the clutch. Then look to see if either of the front wheels and axles are being driven by the engine through the transaxle.) Both axles should show some rotation during this test. If you find an axle turning but the wheel is not, suspect a stripped internal spline in the hub (This would cause car not to move but, you should be able to push it in neutral). If the wheel and axle assembly on the driver side is not turning (as you mentioned) and is locked (Wheel cannot be driven by engine through transaxle) but, at the same time you notice the passenger side wheel/axle assembly spins very quickly you may have a stuck brake caliper piston or a colapsed brake hose on the driver side. (This would cause the car not to move and you would not be able to push it in neutral) To check for the stuck brake issue, loosen the bleeder screw on the caliper and see if fluid squirts out under pressure...If so, you may have found your problem.(Note: make sure there is no pressure applied to the pedal when you open the bleeder) I have found in my experience with justys (I've been working on mine for 5 years now) that Justys are notorious for hub bearing failures and the internal splines on the hubs stripping out where they attach to the splines on the axle shaft. (This is the main reason they quit moving) Please keep me posted on what you find out with your justy Hope this helps! Jim
  7. Dynomite!! Like I said It's probably been 2-3 years since I have bought anything at Folger. Now that you guys are there I will stop in and see ya when I need some stuff. When ya see Gus tell him the guys at CPCC said hi and we hope to see him at our next advisory committee meeting this fall. Thanks, Jim V.
  8. Cool!! Folger is a great store for Subie techs But, unfortunetly when I delt with them 2 years ago they were a bit slow in the parts dept. (it took me 3 weeks to get a rear hub bearing kit for the justy) I'm sure they are better now! I have since used Hunter just for the sake of convienence plus, I get dealer cost plus 15% on all my parts. Considering I don't work there that's hard to beat! Like I said the title has its advantages! The wagon is under construction and is currently not registered (You know how that is!) The Justy is usually out and about looking for 3cyl Metros and Ford Festivas to play with. I will more than likely will be at the WNC meet on July 17th, That is if my wife and kids can do without me! PS: Is Gus Matunis (I think thats how you spell it) still the service manager there at Folger? Talk to ya soon, Jim V.
  9. WJM, I see you are from Mount Pleasent NC. Small world!!! I live near you in Midland NC. I work in Charlotte @ CPCC as an automotive instructor and I am also the Chrysler College Automotive Program (CAP) coordinator there as well. (That title and $1.38 gets me a 24 oz hot cup of coffee at the Circle K on Hwy 49 across from the "old marble orchard".) Congrats on the job @ Subaru. Are you at Folger or Hunter? My travels in my above mentioned occupation bring me to Hunter Chrysler Jeep Subaru quite often (I have a student working there) I don't have any contacts at Folger as they are a GM store. Just wanted to wish you luck in the job and let you know if you see a 40 year old guy cruising around in a white 4wd Justy with chrome wheels and an over the top chevy orange racing stripe that would be me. I also have an 86 gl fwd wagon, bright red with gold flames (soon to get an XT6 suspension and brakes so I can install some WRX wheels) If you're ever at the CPCC automotive building look me up! Good luck! Jim
  10. Mick, Just sent you a check for 4 USMB Logo decals... All internal stick type for inside the window glass, 2 in white and 2 in gold. Thanks, Jim V.
  11. I would like 2 of the USMB decals in white please. Please PM me with instructions on payment (Check or Paypal) and I can give you my address for shipping. Thanks, Jim V.
  12. I would get a subscription just cause Subies are neat! I vote for articles on old school Subes but, most of all I would like to see some articles on Subaru's little runt the Justy. These cars make excellent rally racers and / or tricked out sport tuners. (As you probably guessed, I have a few of these cars) In depth how to articles on any and all Subarus.. new, old, or just different would be great! It would be nice to read a magazine that did not have a tricked out Honda product on every other page! I look forward to the 1st issue.
  13. If you are doing a 5 lug conversion on a 2wd ea82 wagon with drums on the rear and you have a 2wd XT-6 parts car with the discs can you use all the XT-6 rear suspension and brake stuff and put it on the wagon? (XT-6 has lower control arms with a sway bar i'd like to use) It all looks the same except the XT-6 rear control arms don't have the pads for the rear snubbers to contact. (The XT-6 nas no snubbers) Has anyone ever bothered to convert a 2wd wagon? Can you guys help me out on this? Ive got all the parts I just need some direction.
  14. Thanks a bunch subaru_styles! I will probably go with a set of HP coilovers on all 4 corners like you did.(I dont know why I thought you had H&R springs on your car..must have been a brain fart on my end!) I have access to Subie parts at dealer cost plus 10% so the OEM Tokicos will probably run me the same as an aftermarket pair of struts when all is said and done. I went to KYBs web site this morning and found the GR2 shocks for the rear. I will probably order a set this week. Does HP spring have a web site? Did you buy from them direct or did you have to buy them from a distributor? And lastly, do you know the part # for the spring application. Thanks for all your help. Now it's up to my shop for some quality wrench time!
  15. Subaru_Styles Love your 88 wagon!! I've got an 86 ea82 2wd wagon that I plan to upgrade to a 5 lug setup. Two days ago I picked up a 89 XT-6 2wd for all the brake and suspension parts. I copied DR RXs list on the needed components. (Thanks Doc if you happen to read this!) I would like to upgrade to H&R springs and better shocks and struts. Possibly KYBs or Tokicos. Since you have already gone where I want to go. Could you make my quest a bit easier? Could you please fill me in on part #s for the H&R springs, struts, and shocks you used on your trick wagon. I know I'm asking a lot but, your help will be appreciated more than you can imagine! Thanks in advance for any and all help
  16. Wow! this is thread is getting ugly! I have owned and wrenched on my 88 justy 4wd gl for the past 4 years. The experience has led my to a few key observations on what this car is all about. When 4wd was offered on this car in 1988 it was never intended to be a rock crawler, or a mud boggin sippy hole crossing monster! It was designed to handle well, scoot in and out of traffic and get good gas mileage. Mine does all of those things well and it has over 170,000 mi on the original motor.(It may be a runt but, its a tough little runt) With that said...A couple of little known Justy facts: 1) The 4wd Justy has a 5.2:1 final drive in its little transaxle. It does not need 4W LO for a quick takeoff on the street. 2) The gearing in the transaxle is designed to take advantage of the 3cyl high reving capability (I've spun mine to 6800 on many occasions) The 5 speed is set up so 1st and 2nd gears are reduction gears. 3rd is 1:1 and 4th and 5th are overdrive gears. My justy pulls well up to 75- 80 MPH on the street and does it very quickly. Many Festivas, Geos, and early unmodified Hondas have seen my tailights in the 1/8 mi and under stoplight drags. My best top speed.. 102 mph @ 5200 RPM. This aint bad considering that even in 5th gear overdrive my final drive to the wheels is 3.9:1 (It would be faster if I had not gone from 155 to 165 tires..Smaller contact patch = Less rolling resistance) As to the Subie hatch VS the SRT-4 match up....My job has afforded me some quality seat time behind the wheel of an SRT-4 All I will say is this....If you were beating the SRT-4 for the first 200 yards the driver must have been a 17 year old kid who just learned to drive a manual trans a week before. They must have smoked the skins for at least 500 ft for you to get that big a jump In closing...I love all Subarus! I am happy that Subaru HAS and CONTINUES to build a large diversity of vehicles that we all can love and enjoy. Peace to all the subie faithful! !
  17. Any aftermarket 13" wheel with a 4X100 bolt pattern should fit if it has a FWD offset. I got a set of 13"X 6" chrome Epic wheels made by American racing wheels off of a 1988 Nissan Pulsar that I bought at a salvage auction. They bolted right on to my 88 4WD Justy with no problems. I even used the lugnuts off the Nissan as the stud thread and pitch are the same on both cars. I mounted a set of 165-65-R13 Bridgestone Potenza RE-92 tires on them so the tire circumfrence was the same as the 12' wheels and tires. (speedo has to by acurate you know!) You can go the cheap route and get a set of 13"steel wheels off of a 89-94 Justy GL FWD or 4WD. they also use the 165-65-R13 tires and will bolt right on an 88... No Problem! Hope this helps.
  18. Justy bolt pattern is 4X100 just like a Honda, Nissan, and fwd VWs (Golf, Jetta) etc.
  19. Me three!!! My 1986 EA82 wagon would look great with a Momo wheel. Keep me posted!! I'm in for a group buy.
  20. Joseph, Sorry I have not been in touch, I am still in the process of working with this guy to get this parts car. Its a done deal, Its just a matter of the two of us getting out of work and meeting at the same place at the same time! (He's been working a bunch of overtime and so have I) I will try to hook up with him this weekend and I will keep you posted! Sorry for the delay. Jim
  21. I checked out the Justy and it is too cool!! I have an 88 4wd Justy that I've been fooling with for the past 4 years. It sucks that the engine let go. Good news is I have about 6 parts cars and am in the process of getting another...Even better news..I live in Midland NC (about 25 miles east of Charlotte) I can help ya save the Justy if you guys are up for it!!! E-mail me at viehmanj@bellsouth.net Let's do it man....The car and concept are too neat to end up in the bone yard!!!
  22. Gene, having owned an 88 Justy 4wd for the last 4 years I have done much work on mine in that time. I will try to help you out if I can. You must check the engine for spark and fuel when the car cuts out, intermittent problems are like a bad tooth..They never cause you a problem at the dentist's office! When the car cuts out one of two things is happening.. You are not getting spark (My guess is the ignition module in the distributor is getting hot and going open since you mentioned you did change the coil ) Or the fuel pump is old and as it runs it builds up heat in operation due to high resistance in the motor circuit. This causes the pump to shut down till it cools off. Vapor lock could be a possible cause if the pump is getting hot but, You would be talkin quite a bit of heat and this is unlikely. Your problem seems to be temperature related, Yet you did not mention much about temperatures when the problem occurs. Ask yourself these questions: 1.When the car cuts out is it warmed up to operating temp? 2.Does it cut out after a certain amount of minutes of run time regardless of engine temp? 3.What is the outside temp like when it cuts out? Does outside temp increase = Cut out frequency to increase and Length of time I have to wait to restart the car to increase. The answers to these questions will help to narrow down the problem. My guess is you will find a bad ignition module. But, Check Fuel and Spark to be sure!!!. (side note: My car has the original fuel pump and it has 173,000 mi on the clock..Its on its 2nd module) Good luck!
  23. DECALS!!!!!!! Yes! I have been trying to get my sweaty little hands on some since I joined USMB in Sept. I'll take 5 or 10 when you guys make them available. I have friends who have seen and loved the last ones you guys did. Keep me posted!!!!
  24. Wow, I just saw your pictures and my car could be your twin! It too is a white 88 GL 4WD. Like you I have done some modifications. I have upgraded to the bigger brakes from an 89 Justy GL but, I would like to install a set of drilled or slotted rotors But, I have not been able to find anyone who makes them for my application. Same story for Race oriented struts and springs. I would like a set of KYB Agx's But, I dont think KYB makes them for this car. Do you or anyone else out there know of any companys that make SCCA race oriented parts for this car. Heck..I know there are teams out there who race Justys and they aint running stock brakes and suspensions. Like you I plan to upgrade to the 3cyl FI engine down the road.(Just as soon as I can find a low mi 90-94 Justy GL at a salvage auction that I can buy reasonable) Any help you folks out there Subieland could give me would be greatly appreciated!! email me at subiejim@yahoo.com
