  1. We have always used the 15w-40 Chevron oil and have only good things to say about it. Our '88 Suburban has 250,000+ miles on it, and every Soob I've owned I've run the same oil religiously. My B.I.L has a Toyota 4-runner with almost 300K on it - same oil. Same oil goes in his '48 Peterbuilt (and in the 90-something Kenworth hubby drives).
  2. '86 GL Wagon, 5-speed, stock carb - engine has about 220K mi (out of diff. car) - getting approx 26-28 MPG mixed highway/city driving. I run super unleaded only though - and it was only getting 22 MPG when I first started running this motor until a few tanks of super went through her, then the mileage improved a lot......
  3. what is it about that one that doesn't seem right though? Is it upside-down?
  4. psych! Not really a tattoo - just playin' with some indigo It only lasts 2-4 days
  5. Some of the trim on my '86 was missing, but got some off my donor car before it went to a new home. I tried a clear glue that *said* it was for trim (it was about the thickness of ''shoe goo'' or ''goop''), but it started lifting off before I knew it (so I pulled them off before I lost them). I tried to find the 3M stuff that was mentioned when I did a search of previous posts, but all I found was YELLOW stuff 3M stuff and it wasn't very thick. I was wondering if maybe urethane - the black stuff that they install windows with - would work good? It's not cheap, so if there is a less expensive alternative, I'd prefer that.
  6. Why should he even CARE that you have an engine in the back of your own car? OMG what a nosey jerk. SO glad I don't rent to have to deal with people like that!
  7. Those rims are very very nice on that Soob - I like darker rims on darker cars, but lighter cars look better with aluminum/white/chrome to me I really really like the painted bumpers and side trim the same color as the car though!
  8. hmm - I've never had trouble with the lift gate struts not holding it up. Mine have all worked very well. Hubby took one off our parts car when we had it in hopes to use it on the back door of his snowcat, but it's TOO stiff to use that way. Maybe someone wants to trade me a wore out one he can use, LOL!
  9. sounds like my car Although I got my mileage up from 22MPG to 28MPG by using super unleaded only and used Seafoam about 4 tanks ago. It took 4-5 tanks to get the mileage up (and it slowly worked it's way up a mile or two more each tank). If mine doesn't warm up completely, it dies when I put clutch in and braking coming up to a stop. Doesn't die when it's warmed up, but it idles rough ALL the time (no matter if it's cold or warm). I'm going to be doing my timing belts this month, PVC valve/filter, and I might have to do a heli-coil in #1 (gonna try a thread chaser tool first) because I want to put in new NGK's and the plug in #1 won't seat all the way. Considering buying a better coil too. I know my choke needs adjusted - I might have my mechanic brother help me with that one though. I've never messed with carbs myself....
  10. Can I find the owners name of a Soob by the plate # or do I need to stop and peek and get the VIN#? There's a Soob broke down by the highway and it's been there a week. Everyday I drive by and think it's going to have been towed, but it's still there......
  11. I'm confused - I thought the EA82's didn't start until 85 and that an 84 would have an EA81 (thus no timing belts). No?
  12. I have cat-less exhaust too - When hubby and I plugged my ASV's off, we cut a piece of sheet metal to go between the stainless lines that lead to the ASV and the manifold (unbolted the lines, put in sheet metal 'plug' on manifold, then bolted the lines back up. This way everything is still there if we ever decide to put the exhaust with cats back on and want to fix the ASV's instead of disable them.....
  13. nobody? Maybe just a clear picture I can make into a line drawing? The emblem on my car is messed up or I would try off of mine...... Or are the ''stars'' in the same place on the newer emblem and they just took away the 'lines'?
  14. That muffler is almost identical to the one that I had on it that was TOO loud. (Mine had a little shorter tailpipe that was cut straight instead of angled tho - and it sounded like I had NO exhaust system at all!). It looks exactly the same otherwise though - 2 1/4" pipe in, 4" tailpipe was mine. I ended up replacing it with a muffler that is shaped like the short cherry bombs, but it was done by the muffler shop (2 1/4" pipe in, and 2 1/4" tailpipe). It's still loud (husband says it sounds sweet), but not nearly as loud as the first one. Mine was $50 out the door installed - which I was pleased with!
  15. Does anybody have a line-drawing of the old-school Subaru emblem? I did a google search and all I came up with is the new emblem. I want the old one for something I have in mind.....
  16. ''No dissasemble!!! #85 is alive.....'' OK, done being corny, LOL. I say fix it And make your brother help!
  17. I vote for fixing it and letting her have it back I wouldn't do it for free unless it was an easy cost-free fix though.
  18. Nope, we used the spark plug socket. #2 and #3 we were able to take out with fingers once they were loose (and put new ones in with fingers). But, #4 and especially #1 were tight and difficult. #4 wasn't too terribly bad, but (like I said) #1 was so tight we couldn't get the plug in all the way.... I wish we would have known they were new NGK's in there before we took them out to replace them (but we needed #1 out to find TDC anyhow - I would have been much happier knowing there wasn't this problem as well. This car has just fought me the whole way one way or another.......
  19. Well, it's worth a shot I guess. I might get lucky once in my life, LOL. Are threads on spark plug holes different sizes for different brands? These holes almost felt like the wrong plugs with the wrong threads were put in it at one time - they don't look like they go in crooked......they are just tight (one is extremely tight). We always use anti-seize on our plugs too.
  20. Where do I buy the thread chaser tool that Ed mentions in the threads on cross-threaded spark plug holes? I have two plug holes in my engine that are messed up a bit - one bad enough that the plug doesn't seat all the way, the other one was just a pain to remove the plug and replace it (but that one did seat all the way luckily). Before I tear into the timing belt covers to check that they are installed properly, I want to see if I can get that plug thread fixed so I can see if that is part of my rough idle (the plug not seating all the way). Of course the bad threads have to be in the #1 cylinder too And, I'd rather try a thread chaser before we resort to a helicoil kit......
  21. Ya, I actually got some of those before and I hated them. They'd always get knocked off getting out ouf the car - and they are just in the way on the door to me.
  22. AH! I saw those fold-up ones at GI-Joe's - I think they were only $6 or so.
  23. I returned the new plug wires I got because they were not the right lengths (some were too long, one was too short). What plug wires are the best fitting/most reliable that you've found for an EA82?
  24. There are a couple interior design peeves I have for the Soob's - one is that there is no where for a drink holder - and two, that stupid coin holder (crumb/dust collector) under the e-brake lever. I *hate* that stupid crumb collector. Considering fabbing up a nice peice of figured maple or something pretty that isn't a dish shape to go under there. Anybody have a clever idea for fabbing in a cup holder? The flat dash is nice for resting stuff on if you are traveling a STRAIGHT line, but turn a corner and that stuff goes sailing (out the passenger window if it's open, LOL). My sunglasses have ended up in the door pocket on the passenger side more than once, LOL.
