  1. looks like I'll have to save up for one - they are a spendy unit! And one if I sold the car would stay with me! LOL!
  2. Is there a noticable improvement in performance with the weber carb? how much does it cost? Does it improve fuel economy? My wagon is only getting 22-23 MPG's and I sure miss the 30MPG's that the EA81's were giving me the last 10 years! Edit: can someone tell if this is the correct carb or not? http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/acartpro/product.asp?productid=95 it doesn't say what model/size it is, so didn't know. For $65 vs. what I'm seeing them go for on ebay, etc. - good deal if it's the right one...... Or http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/acartpro/product.asp?productid=97 Or http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7969644177&category=33550 ???????
  3. when the CV boots tear on the front axles, they FLING that grease everywhere, and usually on the exhaust too. Putrid smell - I have always been able to tell the very day that I lose a CV boot, LOL.
  4. Mine might be different than yours, the pipes that lead to the manifold from the ASV's - we plugged them off at the manifold. Didn't cost a penny (used scrap sheet metal to cap the holes.) I still get popping on deceleration, but the exhaust shop said it's because of the bigger than stock tailpipe (2 1/2" now with the new muffler - it used to be 4" though, so it's a LOT better now, LOL).
  5. have you run it to empty recently? I had a car that had junk in the gas tank or something and everytime I ran it to empty, it would clog up the filter even if I filled it up to full again.....I was careful usually to keep it above 1/4 tank, but sometimes I would forget......
  6. and another great place is http://www.littlenickel.com/ cut/pastes from ads on the little nickel: 1988 SUBARU 4X4 GL wagon. Mechanic owned. Excellent power train. Runs great. Needs body work. 7. Maybe off the $300 and see what he says - $500 is TOO much around here for a car with that many miles and in that condition. More like $250-300 IMO. You could get a decent running Soob for not much more than $500 and definitely under $1000. I sold an '83 4x4 wagon with 170K on it for $300 (needed a clutch cable immediately and a clutch soon, but it ran super and got 30MPG).
  8. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33253 My car was also popping terribly, shotgun sounds, and fire out the tailpipe.....
  9. I so agree with you there. My mother is a widow and my brothers and I are fatherless because my dad did not wear a seatbelt. We had an accident headed to our summer cabin for vacation - the truck rolled over him too. Left her to raise an 11 year old son, a 9 year old daughter(me), and 1 year old twin boys......
  10. I had an '85 turbo sedan with a 5-speed that popped out of gear (it was 2nd and reverse that it did it in though). It was on warantee (it was only 5 years old when this happened), so it went to the Subaru shop. They ended up having to rebuild most of the tranny......
  11. When I had that noise going on in my car, it ended up being an air pocket trapped in the heater core. I pulled my car up on the ramps when it was cold, put the hood up, started it, and took off the radiator cap. When the car warmed up enough for the thermostat to open up, the level in the radiator went down (there was that trapped air), and I added more fluid and let it run for several minutes until I was SURE all the air was gone. That fiixed it (until I got a leak in the heater core hose, grrr!!)
  12. I don't recall a locating dowel when we replaced the seal on the water pump on my car (when we found the crack in the block after taking out the pump! )I know there wasn't a dowel matter-of-fact - we had to use the bolt to line it up.
  13. I agree with that one! If the rubber cover was there, this thread wouldn't be here (must go find myself a rubber cover for my car - sounds like something that would happen to me! Ack!)
  14. While the air suspension is very cool, when we had an '85 Turbo 4-door sedan with the pneumatic suspension (our first Soob in about '90), and it was a pain in the arse. One air bag went out, and then it sat all wonky - got a new one (and it was NOT cheap), and then another one went wonky. Replaced that one, and it only worked for a little while! The front wouldn't work sometimes and you'd be pushing peanuts, then it went out all together - had to replace the pump at over $500 and it STILL didn't work right. Finally, we just switched to coil-overs. It was really cool when it worked, but it was a complete headache and wallet-draining to keep it working. I would never suggest that headache to anybody.
  15. That's what I'm getting with my 5-speed EA82 (22-23MPG, mixed hiway/town) and I am rather dissapointed. I am a very ''docile'' driver most of the time too. My 4-speed EA81's I had for the past 10 years would give me nearly 28-30MPG regularly!
  16. Oh, that's a good idea - while I'm there I need to find an 'ignition on' hot wire for the radio (it's hooked up to a constant on hot wire now and I'm afraid if it sat too long w/o being started that the battery would be dead from the light in the radio).
  17. Yes, the line is hooked up, but I didn't think about the vacuum canister...... That I can find at a JY I'm sure. I will pull the buttons off and see if I can take as little apart as possible......
  18. If you have a spare on the other car you mentioned, swap them and see.
  19. OK, did a search and only came up with that the push-button heater controls are vacuum operated, but didn't find any post that really helped past that .........My car has heater-control issues. It's the push-button heater controls, but the person I bought it from by-passed them when they quit working to a wire to turn the vent to the defroster. Pushing the bottons does nothing right now. And, sliding the hot/cool temp setting feels really 'iffy' like it's going to break if I'm not careful (that part does seem to work though). Now, with warmer weather coming, I KNOW I am going to want to use that vent setting since my car has no A/C. Rolled down windows muss my hair (quit laughing!) I had the whole dash apart on the '84 Soob I had a few years back to fix a leaky heater core, but it had the 'slide' type heater control, so it was way different (plus it was EA81). I'm not fond of doing another tear-down like that again - but if I have to do it to fix it right, then so-be-it. Seems like I will be forever 'un-rednecking' this rig. I hate it when cars have been neglected/abused! Also, I have no clue what was wrong with it that the previous owner did this by-pass. What is the common problem with them malfunctioning? The parts car that I had and gave away, it's push buttons were a wreck (all of them stuck in), so I didn't bother taking it apart (although maybe I should have for the learning experience.)
  20. .......or you got lucky and they got spooked in the midst of TRYING to steal your tools, etc!
  21. Since before I got my car, the key has been broken off in the ignition. I've just been using a stub of a key to start it. I discussed this a month or so ago, but one thing I don't think I mentioned was that the ignition sticks with the starter engaged unless you turn it back to the run position. Is this because of the broken off key or does it happen to others regardless if the key is intact or not? I was going to just leave it like it is because the locksmith wants a minimum of $60 to get the key stub out (he tried to pull it out with special tools, but concluded it would need to be pulled apart to get it out since it seems like the key is bent/twisted slightly inside the mechanism and is too tight to pull free. I would pay to have him take out the stub IF I knew that would also repair the sticking in 'start' position. Also, just headed out to put a new muffler on my car this morning! Got a great quote for $50 installed! Can't beat that!
  22. Dare to be different! I don't like the looks of the solid black as they blend into the tires too much. And, I just don't like white (don't like white shoes either!) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33552 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33109
  23. If it comes to it, I could take a picture of mine - although I am not confident that it will come out clear enough to be a huge help.
