  1. Okay, thanks RavenTBK... I just found an earlier thread on the topic of the pitch stopper, with some good background info. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35771&highlight=pitch+stopper and even a picture! http://random.removed.us/usmb/imagedump-070.jpg BUT I'm still not at all clear on how to get to this part and the 12mm bolts you describe... through the engine bay, or under the car? Pulling the engine is not a short term option unfortunately. EDIT: oh jeez, there are actually about a million "pitch stopper" threads here. I'll post back if I can't find the answer in one of them. Thanks again for the clue though.
  2. Wow, that car is beautiful. I'm not sure I've ever seen a picture of one in such good shape. Congratulations! I'll try to answer a few of your questions, I'm sure others here can answer many more.... cheers! 1) Oil leak: check all your gaskets, it could be about anywhere. Mine has a tiny leak, it also gets on the oil pan, and I have no idea where it's coming from. 2) These cars are tanks. People beat on them in the dirt, yah. CV joints are said to be the weak point, make sure your CV boots stay in good shape to increase the lifespan of the joints. 3) Online info source: you've found one of the best . 4) Aftermarket wheels are indeed super rare. Look for a 4x140mm bolt pattern. Lots of folks swap on Peugot 14/15" wheels, as they have the same pattern. You have about 25" diameter of clearance with tires. 5) lots of threads on this board by people hunting for certain parts, search on the parts you're looking for 6) about 10psi without upgrades to exhaust/intake, I believe - others can speak to this better or search this board, there are lots of threads on this 7) no clue
  3. On my D/R 4wd 5spd, the 4wd shifter for the Hi-Lo shift bounces down when I hit the gas, and up when I let off it. About a half an inch, I'd say... enough to be visible. It feels like the whole drive assembly is moving... like from __ to /\ if you get my meaning. Is this a problem with mounts? I've gone under the car and tried to wiggle stuff, but the driveshaft was solid and I couldn't move anything in that area. The clutch was replaced about 6 months ago, by a shop. Maybe something wasn't tightened all the way?
  4. I want a Bistro! Sorta looks like if a Mini (or a Justy) and an Impreza mated. http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/subaru/bistro/1997_1/photo/14052/
  5. Fix it if you can. I put 50-100 miles a day on an 85 GL carbed 5spd wagon for a few months with a full painter's crew kit in it. 20ft extension ladder up top, 12ft ladder, sprayer, pressure washer, 30+ gallons of paint, tools, cloths, bins inside. Never a hiccup. Oh yeah, it had 255K on it too.
  6. I know this is too ancient to count, but my 86 RX sedan has no body kit at all, just the nerf spoiler and some gnarly mudflaps (not sure if these are the same as the GL-10 mudflaps, they might be). Although they look cool, the mudflaps are actually kind of annoying, I'd have much more curb-hoppin' clearance without them!
  7. Hey, I have the same thing going on with an EA82T. The stumble is between 2K-3K. Plugs are new, OEM spec NGK. Wires are new OEM Subaru from dealer. No noticeable difference after doing that. I have OEM cap/rotor from dealer that I need to install. Maybe that'll solve it. coolant temp sensor was already replaced a while back.
  8. I have been driving on a used JDM EA82T (resealed) for a few months now with no apparent engine issues. Now, the accessories are another story... if you get a JDM engine be prepared to do all the normal 30-40,000 mile tuneup stuff.
  9. Congrats, keep us posted. If the AT is a pain to fix, replace it with a D/R 5-speed
  10. Hair dryer will help take the old ones off... Bump for pics like someone said, but ya gotta followup with "installed" shots for sure! (Related story: I went through a cheapo car wash and the channels in my sedan taillights were still filthy when I got out. Anyone else have this problem?)
  11. Nice job, that does look clean. Can't wait to hear it run
  12. Keep it. Old Soob wagons are solid gold. Lift? Mudrat79 (contact info above) just happens to be in Eugene. He can set you up.
  13. Verbatim from this article: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/39863/subarus_diesel_dilemma.html "After perfecting the design of its distinctive flat-four petrol engine, Subaru has admitted it's looking at the world's first flat-four diesel for a passenger car. "We have working prototype units," an insider told Auto Express. But there's no guarantee the engine will be built. "Subaru must make a business case for introducing a diesel, and currently we don't think sales would be high enough to justify the development costs," said our source."
  14. Derek - I'm in Eugene too, I drive an 86 turbo sedan but have also run an 84 GL 4WD wagon in the past. The wagon, to answer another question, had a fuel filter just in front of the rear axle. PITA to replace without lifting the car, I'd recommend jackstands.
  15. At least on my 86 sedan, they are different moldings for front and back mudflaps. HTH
  16. Thanks for this unique shot. But, does the 'Lac run?
  17. coolant temperature sensor can cause problems if it goes out... Is your engine going through a lot of coolant, i.e. does it need to be refilled often?
  18. I know this is a Frankenthread, but I just asked my local dealer the other day about this. Kendall Subaru in Eugene, OR can get RX struts, all four corners. Yes, I made sure it was a unique P/N. So maybe they are not all gone? BTW, I ordered a cap/rotor from the same dealer, also specific to this year of RX ?!. It arrived in the original 1986 boxes. fun stuff. Looks like "new old stock" for you collectors.
  19. I would replace the flasher. Especially if it's cheap. Let us know how it goes!
  20. I did it the quick way, running 2 front stock speakers from a $12 Goodwill-sourced Sony head unit. Metra brand dash+wiring adapters from The Stereo Shop on 7th and Washington. Took about 15 minutes to install, with the excellent directions on this site (search for "ea82 stereo"). So I finally have tunes in-dash! This is a good thing, cause I burnt out an alternator running an inverter to a boombox a while back. Still need a DIN "frame", not sure what you call it, the thing with the metal tabs that surrounds the head unit and holds it in place on the adapter plate. Right now the unit has a wicked lean on. Also, need to take the time to get the rear speakers hooked up - I think there's more than enough info on this site to do the job easily. Also came with the kit: Justy and EA81 adapter plates that I'm not using - if anyone wants them just let me know. I guess I could mail them out if you're not in my area. No guarantees that you'll have everything to install a stereo, but it should be all the adapter plates at least.
  21. I have a dumb question, when's the last time you checked the tranny fluid? Sounds like it was all replaced a year ago, but maybe a seal went or something?
  22. Well, here is a super-quick colorization. Looks kinda strange. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=4990&sort=1&cat=500&page=1 Edit: Oh jebus, what was I thinking? I'll try to work on something proper. A bit rusty with the photo editing. ---------- /usr/bin/gimp
  23. well, my g/f who also drives the car said she doesn't mind if I "make it sound cool", so I think I'll give it a shot. Hell, I can always put it back if I want to. In fact I think I just got permission to do the exhaust one of these days. LOL I forgot you were in Oregon, ... well those from out of state can just try to imagine our rally roads
  24. You know, I already did that. Then I put it back. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to removing the snorkel? It's just a big plastic tub shaped to fit in as much of the inner fenderwell as possible. Openings on either end are about 3-4 inches wide. Absolutely nothing inside of it. The open end (when installed) sits just rear and below the right headlight, behind the front of the frame. It's not pointing at any particular opening I can see. From what I've gathered, this system is designed to keep as much dirt/dust as possible out of the intake. How much of a part does the snorkel play? Is it just a silencer? If so, it's *so* outta there. Let me know. Removing it would leave the system open at the fender wall... intake filter exposed to the air... /me scared. I want to be able to take this thing over 50 miles of gravel without worrying. Here in Oregon, we have entire unpaved highways, with signage and everything, in the national and state forests (giant tree farms), so it's not just a dream
  25. Nice to hear I'm not the only one. It's a good thing I didn't have a breaker bar like I wanted, or I probably would have snapped a nut as well. Something just *didn't seem right* though, about accessing the fenderwell for that task... After removing the bumper I was able to adjust headlamps downwards, the whole point of the task... I will post a new thread with before and after flix when it's done.
