  1. That thing looks like the floor of the Alhambra!! Arabesques for days... is that contact paper?
  2. this thread is very awesome. *off to look at motorcycles*
  3. having purchased a turbo sedan which came with with rust and heads issues I couldn't agree more with Trogdor's post. condition of suspension/alignment is another one to watch for, it's soooo tempting to rally these things and sometimes bumps happen
  4. Any old Subaru that you can't see daylight under, looks low! Thanks for the photo!
  5. Hey, I don't get it. My RX sedan has clear turn signals up front. Is that "rare" or something? never mind that one of the turn signals needs some baling wire to attach it to the subframe under the hood
  6. Mobil 1: yes, runs well, but unless you are very very confident of your engine seals I wouldn't recommend it. I changed to Mobil 1 and my EA82T now drops a few drops of oil a day, steadily. Not good. Now I'm looking at a PITA reseal (edit: hey someone just posted a great advice thread on how to reseal without pulling the engine, good timing ). Just my 2 cents.
  7. Standard GL fenders should fit. Not sure about body kit molding.
  8. Agreed on the oil. The oil leaks on these cars can be maddening from what I've seen and heard. I'm at the point where I'm just going to put down a big cookie sheet in the carport and fill it with cat litter. Brand new seals in January and it's already dropping a few drops a day. Course, I ignored the advice of the mechanic to use 20W50... that might help you.
  9. that's great... at this rate, she should be able to buy an old Soob with paper route money by 13, and have it in good shape by the time she gets her license!
  10. The turbo is cooled by the engine oil, as I understand it, so there is no way to leak engine coolant to the exhaust... What did your temp gauge say while the white smoke was coming out? Were you overheating? A compression check on all 4 cylinders will be a very valuable test in your case.
  11. That's a sweet deal!! Off-topic: I've been looking out for a 323 GTX for ever and a day. I've only ever seen one. Lucky with the 4wd hatches!
  12. Cracking the door on this dusty thread... what's the status of this car today?
  13. Singletrack, the GL-10 you see might not have the stiffer RX struts. Other than that I can't imagine what would be different, other than the GL-10's (weighty) addition of sunroof, digidash etc
  14. very nice. like the stealth color. Also, it is my personal opinion that EA82 wagons were made as sticker stands, among their other 1001 uses. I will post a picture of my buddy's wagon someday. We calculated at one point that the stickers were worth twice as much as the wagon itself.
  15. Short answer: it depends on the engine and transmission. suspension may be air suspension on the GL-10. interior trim and such is fancier on the GL-10, digital dash etc.. apart from that it's a perfect parts car.
  16. I had a mechanic recommend that same oil, Castrol 20w50, for my EA82 turbo. How's it been for you? I of course went out and got a case of Mobil 1 and have had to deal with the 5 drips a day since then.
  17. Agreed with other posters, this sounds like plugged exhaust if you can't rev to 3000!! The turbo usually kicks in between 2000-3000 so that would explain why you're only seeing it once in a while... a bad turbo would NOT keep you from being able to rev up to my knowledge... The catalytic converters can get plugged up over time and need to be replaced when that happens. You have two, one on the downpipe and one down under the car.
  18. Marine Drive rocks. One time I took my old '76 Lincoln coupe out there and wound it up as far as I dared. 90mph at about 3000 RPM in OD and the shimmy scared me so I had to back down. The Mitsubishi is a Cordia. Sort of like an old Colt but wide track, turbo. Hot stuff in its day and quite rare here. http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=0045
  19. Definitely worth fixing, those are low miles . Shouldn't have to pay a mechanic more than 175 or so to do it for you, but I'd recommend to just sell the car "as is" to a more mechanically inclined person - the work is not too hard.
  20. If the radiator cap/thermostat/radiator flush doesn't fix it, you might want to check your coolant temperature sensor - it's down on the bottom corner of the radiator, passenger side IIRC, and a very cheap part. If you find that the radiator is just no good (damaged/rusted out/whatever) and you want to replace it, make sure you get a twin-row radiator ... they work a lot better. I've never seen my temp gauge over a tad over halfway, even after hours on the freeway, with a new twin-row radiator.
  21. Look out for a couple more symptoms: 1) does your oil look like oil? or milky with coolant? 2) exhaust smell sweet? 3) adding coolant all the time to keep it full? The above tends to indicate maybe blown head gasket, or cracked head. If none of that is going on, you might have a bad coolant temperature switch, thermostat, radiator cap, etc. Let us know more details if possible. How many miles on the engine? Or maybe the radiator is clogged and needs flushing... there are lots of possibilities based on what you've said. MOST IMPORTANT: Find the problem soon. If you drive the car when it's in the red zone you can probably kiss the engine goodbye.
  22. Nice shot. It's good to know that even the "hot" EA82Ts can make it to 300K with proper care - at that rate my JDM mill should make it to the year 2050 or so with the number of miles I put on it. I too am curious about the high end of these cars, but not that curious about mine yet The display in the center of the gauge lights up in at least 2 different colors, if I remember right - one for doors, one for 4WD HI / LO range. These instrument clusters have me scratching my head trying to figure out what else to add. I looked at new Imprezas and you have to spec the oil pressure gauge as an option, it sits outside the main instrument area on the dash!
  23. When you say the turbo light comes on "once in a while" that makes me think there is a problem with the turbo. I can get the turbo light to come on almost any time I hit the gas, if I lay into it. Normal driving under 35 doesn't usually get into the turbo, but when I'm accelerating onto the highway and keeping revs above 3000 I'll see the light in every gear. How many miles on the car/engine/turbo?
  24. Welcome to the board. We love Subarus too. I too have an 86 turbo sedan, they rock. The search feature in the toolbar up top has answered a ton of my questions about maintaining/upgrading the car. Have fun!
  25. The car's base model name is "GL", yes. A lot of parts catalogs seem to label the later (85-89) GLs as Loyales, since that is what the name changed to (in 1990?) though the body did not change.
