  1. Okay, I tuned up the Soob, plugs (NGK), wires (7mm silicon), new disty cap and rotor, new fuel filter, new exhaust, new fuel pump. Mileage still at 21-22 MPG. I am getting better mileage with my Explorer. I looked for the "other" fuel filter by the firewall, did not find it. Old fuel pump was leaking, entire area was soaked. Whoever put that one in there, really did a good rig job on it. The new one was made for my car and went on in less than 10 minutes, replaced the lines while I was there. Had the exhaust fixed, the cat was totally clogged, replaced with straight pipe, both the front and rear are gone, sounds pretty good. Now, why isn't my mileage getting any better? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  2. I have been looking at pictures in the Haynes manual again. They show a tank that is listed as a vacuum reservoir tank. My Soob does not have one. The pic shows it by the passenger side wheel well. Do I need one, and if so, how do I install it? This is a 1987 GL wagon, carbed, no turbo, 5Man D/R 4WD. I have a vacuum leak that can only be heard while accelerating. i have gone through the whole system and have replaced all lines. Now it sounds like it is under the dash, so I will be replacing the lines in there next. Any ideas?
  3. I got a vacuum leak on my Soobie on Monday. Today I found out it was the EGR valve. I called AutoZone, they can get it but they want $200 for it. I almost choked when they told me the price. I am going to the JY this weekend.
  4. I changed everything you listed except the front filter. Where do I look under the hood, left or right, front or back of engine compartment? I found a broken pruge valve yesterday. According to what I found and read it has to be replaced if any oil or fuel is present. The problem is that no one local that I can find has one. The only thing left is the dealership. Any ideas?
  5. I don't know what else it could be. I gave the car a good tune-up. It always lost some going up hill, now it loses 10 miles on the same hill.
  6. My Soobie is still getting mediocre mileage, and it is also starting to lose power going up hills. I think that the problem is either the catalytic converter or there is a collapsing exhaust pipe. My question is, what is the other piece of equipment in the exhaust system? I know what the muffler is, what is the first one where the pipe Y's, and the next one back? Any one know?
  7. I looked under the car yesterday, there is no O2 sensor. I am now out of ideas to fix my mileage. All I have left is the exhaust, which will be done on the weekend of the 9th next month. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  8. If I disconnect the ECU on my soob, and adjust the carb to lean out the mixture, will the car be alright? Is it possible to run it like a car from 20 years before, without all the compter controls?
  9. 4WD, carbed, 4 door, wagon, no turbo, EA82.
  10. I gapped them at .046 or .047. I also advanced the timing to match.
  11. 1987 GL Wagon. Carbed, 173K, supossed to be a newer engine, not really sure. I am getting 22MPG right now. New NGK plugs, Accel coil, 7mm silicone wires. Would like to get at least 25MPG. I drive 60 Miles round trip to work every day, and boost in milage would be great. I plan on addressing the O2 sensor this weekend, if it doesn't rain.
  12. I changed the coil, plugs, wires, cap & rotor. My mpg didn't go up 1/2 mile per gallon. Shouldn't I have gotton more than this? Please Help.
  13. OK, I changed the PCV valve and the fuel filter today. I found the vacuum leak. The idiot didn't hook it back up when he got done with it yesterday. Now it runs smooth and level. Now I have to fix the exhaust, and change the O2 sensor. I will let you know what the milage does.
  14. Replaced the Bosch with NGK's. replaced a few broken hoses, they were completely hardened. Ran the timing up some, doesn't ping any more, now we will see what happens. The engine runs a little rough now, I think there is a problem with a vacuum line somewhere. I pulled the connector from the breather to the fender off, and now when I put my hand over the end of the breather, engine idle comes up and it smooths out. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  15. I replaced the coil, plug wires, dist cap, and rotor, it seems to run a little better. I will let you know after a couple of days.
  16. We need to have a meet in Oklahoma. I know there are more from here than me. I need to find someone local to trade parts with, even though I don't have any right now that aren't on the car.
  17. What are the best ways to get the EA82 more fuel efficient? I am only getting about 21 mpg. I have replaced the plug with Bosch Platinums, put on a rebuilt carb. I plan on putting an Accel coil on this weekend. I put new plug wires on it last summer, except for one. The new ones were great except that the one for the passenger side front was about 6 inches short. I used the old one. I will be taking that one in next time. I pulled the connection from the end of the breather to the fender and pulled the valve out, then plugged the vacuum line to the valve. What else can I do? Please help.
  18. I'm new here but, I agree. I have been finding things by hit and miss. Got luckyand found most everything I was looking for. New links would help speed this up.
  19. Thanks again. I have learned more in the past two days on this sight than in all of the reading in the last year. My engine works well, just leaks a little oil. I already have new pan and cam cover gaskets. The tranny is very tight, doesn't leak, and the 4WD works well, no noise, shifts easy. It is very reassuring to know that when I need the parts, you guys are here. Does anyone have a diagram of the vacuum lines to the intake manifold. My brother had most of them off and I had to put them back without a picture. I am sure they are not all in the right place. Mileage is not that great right now, maybe 22 if I really pay attention to what I am doing and keep my foot out of the carb. How good are the Weber carbs? I put a rebuilt Hitachi on mine, then found out through this sight that Weber made kits for the Soobs for about the same price.
  20. Thanks, mine has the carb, and no turbo. You guys are great.
  21. Hey, I am new here and really like the place. I am learning more all the time. I have a 1987 GL 4WD Wagon, it was given to me. I would like to know what engine I have. I have read about the EA## but I don't know what I have. Please help.
  22. I have read on here that you can do a SPFI conversion on the carb models. What is involved? How hard is it? Do you have to buy new, or can you get used and refurbish? I have a junk yard by me that has a few Soobs on hand, and I think that they are all SPFI.
