I can smell your jealousy from here

That rally sounds like a lot of fun. And we still need pics. -
This to thank Turbone for the rear disks. I finally got them on today. I drilles them out for the 6 lug 14" before I put them on, and when I pick a set that I like, they will be easier to install since the holes are already there. The car stops a lot better now, and the pedal feels stiffer. Thanks again Turbone.

I have started working on the 1980 GL Wagon for my daughter. The gas tank is completely clogged, and needs to be dropped and cleaned. The Haynes manual says to unbolt and drop it. The problem that I see is the rear end sits in adepression in the bottom of the tank. Do I have to drop the rear end, or can I just lift the car by the frame and let the rear end drop to give me enough clearance? I also need a passenger rear light assembly, if anyone has one please give me a price. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How much for the rack?

Okay, I have looked all over and cannot find any place locally that sales a steering wheel adapter for a 1987 Subaru. The ones that they have do not list my car. Does anyone know what company makes an for a 1987 GL? I really want a new wheel. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

1987 GL Wagon, almost 208,000.

Who had the rear disk brakes for the wagons? I need to upgrade and remember someone on the boards had them. Please let me know, I plan to start this early next month.

OK, I have come to the realization that I really need to lift my Wagon. I have researched all over the internet, and I want the opinions of everyone on here. Which lift kit is the best for the money? And what are the best options for wheels? I wanted to just put 14" wheels on and let it go but, I have found that there are not a lot of tire choices in 14". I want to put 15" wheels and tires and I know that I have to put a lift on to make them fit. Any help and ideas are greatly appreciated.

"How many miles do you drive in a year?"
cd45 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
300 miles a week just to work and back. The 87 GL is the only car running right now, so it also gets driven around with the family. Mom gave me a 1983 Chevy Suburban a couple of weeks ago, and as soon as I get it legal, it becomes the family car and the GL is all mine again, finally. -
It snowed here in Oklahoma, finally. This is the first time that I have gotten to use the 4WD on my 87 wagon. It had the D/R 5 Speed. I drove around to get some errands done and to help some friends get some groceries. I am NOT ever getting rid of my Subie, it is the best car that I have ever owned. It would only spin if I made it spin, and I never got stuck, even when I parked in a small snow bank. If anything goes wrong and/or breaks, I will pay to fix it. This car ROCKS!!

I paid $100 for the one that I got for my daughter. 4 Speed single range 4WD, 1600 EA71. It needs some work but, it should be good for a first car for a teenager.

Rear hatch washer doesn't work.

Finally, a problem that I know how to fix. The hose has a check valve in line. Mine had rusted shut. Pull the hose at the valve, and use a puch or other suitable item to move the ball in the valve, that is what I did and now mine works fine. -
Ok, I have a 1987 GL Wagon. It was given to me by my Brother. It has been a daily driver for about 2 years. The only thing that I never liked about it was the color, kind of a pink, purple, champaigne. I wanted another color, I chose Olive Drab, you know Army Green. I have been painting it on calm days, with a spray can, and I am finally done with the drivers side. I am posting a pic to show it off. I got the wagon wheels off of a 1980 wagon, and painted them black. All the paint is flat, absolutey no shine. I love the way it turned out.

My choke was not working, so I put a manual choke on it. The only problem is that now the car runs very rich, and I am not sure what to do with the electrical. I tried grounding it to the chassis but, that only burns out the fuse. If anyone has any ideas, I really need to know what to do. I really don't want to put the original stuff back on. Thanks in advance.

I would be happy with 30MPG. I am lucky to get 24MPG. I have done everything that I can think of, and it finally went up to 23-24MPG. 1987 GL Wagon. Carbed, 5 Sp D/R 4WD. I am glad to hear that I am not the only one getting sucky mileage.

OK, I had the A/C upgraded to 134a, and now the compressor does not come on when I push the button on the dash. However, if I hot wire to the battery, it comes on and runs perfectly. If anyone has any ideas, please help.

edrach, i am very interested in the disk brake conversion. There are none in Oklahoma. The Subaru's are not very popular around here. Please let me know, that is the last thing that I need to do to upgrade my wagon.

I have a 1987 Gl Wagon, 1.8, carbed, no turbo, 5sp, D/R. I need to get the A/C fixed. I want to change it to R134, so I can keep it charged myself. I called the local parts stores looking for a new drier, and no one has what I need. The one in the car has a switch at the top and the lines are 180 degrees away from each other. The local stores have one without a switch, and the lines are only 90 degrees out. If anyone has any ideas, please help.

Vac. leak, what is this part!?
cd45 replied to BlindSight's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I pulled mine from the car. When it was given to me, the valve was broken and just sucking air. I removed it, put an aluminum plate under the EGR valve on the intake manifold, and plugged the other vaccuum line. It runs better than it did, with a better idle. I also had a bad backfire problem, and someone on this site told me that a quarter would fit the lines just above the exhaust outlet on the bottom of the engine. They fit perfectly, and now the car does not have a backfire problem. Good luck. -
I run my plugs at .055", and finally got the mileage up to 24 MPG. I have not heard of anyone running 25 degrees of timing before, what mileage do you get?
-
Brought it home today, you are right, it is the EA71. It cleaned up pretty good, used a pressure washer to get all the junk and dirt off of it. Vacuumed most of the crud out of it. When I pulled the dipstick out, the oil looked new, nice and clean. I hope that is a good sign. I will be getting back with you on how to wire up the switch. I am building this one for my daughter, she turned 15 last week, I am using the wagon to teach her what I can about cars, she will be helping me whenever there is something major being done. Thanks for the info.
