  1. That wasn't it. I checked, there only the main timing lines. I pulled the #1 plug, and made sure that the "0" lined up at the same time. Then I pulled the distributor, and lined the rotor up with #1 wire. I put the plug back, and adjusted the disty until the engine started. It ran pretty good. Then I set the timing with light, and took it for a quick trip. There is a lot of hesitation, but I think I can adjust it out after the sun comes up tomorrow. Thanks for the help. Now all I need to fix is the "STOP LIGHTS" light coming on whenever I step on the brake pedal. I disconnected the wires to the resevoir, and that did not stop the lights. Please help.
  2. Brought it home last month. Did a good tune up. New NGK plugs, MSD coil, MSD 8mm wires, new cap and rotor, oil and filter change. I will put the distributor back tomorrow, and start over. I put the carb to factory settings. Thanks.
  3. OK, I put a manual choke on the Weber today. I thought that would fix it. It didn't. Now it acts like it has a timing problem. I put the timing mark at "0", and looked at the rotor, it was pointing at the number 2 plug. I pulled the ignition, and pointed it at the number 1 plug wire. It refused to start, and started backfiring badly. The vacuum line to the distributor started blowing instead of sucking. I put the ignition back where it was, and at least it starts right up now but, the distributor is at the end of it's adjustment. I moved in on tooth in both directions, and it got better. I thought I had it, but now it has very bad lifter clatter unless you keep the idle below 1500RPM. And now it won't run again. Even with the choke set. Please Help!! I am lost.
  4. I saw that some people were using almost bone stock VW Beetles. Not sure how fast they were going. Just like the idea of using a Sooby.
  5. would the 205 fit? If so, those would be great on the Brat.
  6. I stayed home from work today to sit with my son, who has an earache. We were watching TV, and there was a show on about the Baja 1000. I got to thinking, would it be possible to build a wagon that could make it, not for the win, but for the run. I am thinking about a mid eighties wagon with a EA25 and all wheel drive, with at least a 4" lift. There are roads but, they are rather rough, and I think the all wheel drive would be better in the long run. Strip out the interior, put some comfortable seats in, and go. Just another idea, what do you think?
  7. How hard is it to do the 5 Sp swap? My Brat has the 3Sp auto. My wagon has the 5 sp D/R and I really like it.
  8. The light on the dash of the Brat that is supposed to warn you that you are low on brake fluid comes on every time I step on the brake pedal. I have thouroughly gone through the brake system, even replaced all the fluid. Is the problem with the sensor in the top of the resevoir? Can I just run a wire between the two on the top, or will that really mess things up? I am not worried about running out of brake fluid, I religously check all the fluids under the hood 2 or 3 times a week. I know the system is good, just worried about the light on the dash. Any help is good. Thanks.
  9. If you find anyone, let us know. I have been looking for a year or so and I can't find any.
  10. I found a 1985 Sedan in the local JY. It has the digital dash in it, and most of the interior. There is also a 1983? GL wagon that I am pulling parts off of that has a digital dash. I am thinking of getting them for my 1987 GL and the 1984 Brat. First, do I have to have the brain to make them work? If not then I might just go get them this weekend. If I do, I will just forget it. Most of the reason I like the cars I have so much is because there are no computers on them. Thanks.
  11. I put the new gaskets on the Weber carb yesterday. It seems to run smoother. I am still adjusting everything. There is a lag in it while doing around 25 MPH. I guess it needs more adjusting. After that, I get the radiator fixed, and start driving it, I can't wait.
  12. OK, fixed the brakes today. Lesson #1: Get the book out. If nothing else, look at the pictures. I put the brakes from the 1987 wagon last weekend. I DID NOT look at the book at any time. I had NO brakes. I changed the master cylinder, still no brakes. Broke open all the bleed valves and let the fluid run out, refilled the resevoir 2 times, just to make sure all air was out of the system, and to get new fluid in. Removed all tires, and pulled the rear drums. They were there, and installed backwards. If any of you know drum brakes, you know the springs are out, and the adjuster is on the back side. I put them in wrong because I DID NOT look at the book. I pulled them apart, put them back together the right way, BY THE BOOK. Then I bled the whole system one wheel at a time, now the brakes are great. I can actually stop while driving. I also replaced the plugs, with NGK's, wires, with MSD 8.5mm, the distributer, and rotor. I also put an MSD Blaster 2 coil on it, because I like the way my wagon runs with it. I opened the gap on the plugs .010 more than stock because of the more powerful coil. If anyone knows if this is the wrong thing to do, please let me know. Now the problem seems to be the carb needs to be overhauled. I have no experience with Weber. I am hoping they are like other carbs. Again, if anyone has any experience, please let me know. After that, I will be replacing the rear bearings. With everything off on the back, you can grab the end of the CV shaft, and it moves around 1/2" in all directions. I might have to replace the CV shafts also. Again, if anyone had info on any of the stuff that I have posted about, don't be shy, I need all the help I can get. Thanks.

    EA81 VS sammy?

Just did a quick search, and found out that Suzuki quit making the Samurai. I didn't know that. They are only offering the XL7 type truck now. They are not bad vehicles, for running around in. I don't like the high center of gravity, and the engine is only a 1.3L inline 4 cylinder. I am not sure of the horse power. I like the Subaru because of the low center of gravity. And the engines seem to go on forever, stout little buggers. I have only owned one other car longer than my current GL wagon, and that was a Mazda Protege that I bought to get my credit rating back up. Now I own 3 Subarus and 1 Chevy, and the Chevy is for sale. I would say buy the Subaru, 0more fun to play with. JMHO.
  14. I replaced the rear brakes today. I put the old ones from my GL wagon. The ole ones on the Brat were due replacement. Before I started, I had no pedal, after I got done, I still had no pedal. Even after I bled all four corners. I have decided that the problem lies in the master cylinder. There is also a lot of play in the rear drivers side axle, a little over 1/2" of movement in and out. I am going to replace both sides, and the rear bearings at the same time. I also found out why the engine was overheating, there is a leak in the radiator. I let it run long enough to get totally warmed up. I opened the hood and there was antifreeze shooting out across the engine. I will be buying a different part every pay day. I will have it on the road in about two months. I will also be doing the rust repair between the other repairs. I will post more pics as repairs and painting are done. I also plan to repaint the topper. Can anyone tell me where I can get a new Brat vinyl? I am thinking of repainting, and replacing the vinyl behind the cab.
  15. I am going to start working on the brakes this week. I am curious if the old rear brakes off my 1987 GL wagon will work on the 1984 Brat. They look like thaty have the same bolt pattern on them. If they do, I can just swap them out, until I get the rear disk brakes. It will also save me money if I have to replace the shoes, because I have a set that doesn't have 8 to 10K on them. Thanks. P.S.--I did a compression check last night, and all 4 cylinders stayed between 125 and 130 PSI.
  16. Thanks daeron, the write up was perfect. I did not have any problems getting the ignition to work. Next, I will use it for fog/driving lights. I might even set one up for lights above the cab, if I can find a light bar for the Brat, and I decide I don't like the topper.
  17. We are still putting her wagon back together. Finally found a 1984 GL10 that has good interior, with a good ignition switch, and all the other stuff we need for her wagon. We are going to strip the other wagon because it was rolled. I am taking the engine as a spare for the Brat. Whe doesn't even have her license yet, just a learners permit. She is glad we have found the donor wagon though.
  18. I now have the Brat fixed, mostly. I thought I would take some pics of all 3 cars together. They are a 1980 GL Wagon, a 1984 Brat, and a 1987 GL Wagon. The 1980 is my daughters, the others are mine. I can't wait until I get the Brat on the road.
  19. Right after I get the grill painted and put back on. I will post pics of all my Soobs together.
  20. OK, I put the relay in like I read on here. Now the truck starts with the key everytime. I am so stoked. Now I get to twork on the brakes, then I'll be almost ready to drive it all the time. Thanks for the info, it is now printed off and put into my Subaru Manual.
  21. Buy it!! Buy it!! I am finding that they are the coolest trucks made. I love mine.
  22. I got the Brat started yesterday. I had to use a screwdriver across the starter. It still needs a little work but, it does run, and sounds pretty good. I will be putting a relay on the starter today so I can use a key instead of the screwdriver. Then I need to look at the brakes, the pedal goes all the way to the floor. Other than that, just small things to check, change all the fluids, and drive the crap out of it. I have been working on the EA82 for 3 years now, and think that I know about it. Is there anything about the EA81 that I really need to know? I Like that there are no long timing belts but, those are really not a problem anymore, since I have changed them twice. From what I have read on here, the engine I have has the hydraulic lifters so I don't have to worry about adjusting them. Any tricks that have been learned, I would love to know about before I get surprised. Thanks for any and all info.
  23. Never mind. The car was rolled. The interior is still good, which is what I am looking for anyway. Still has the key in the ignition. Will probably take all the locks and the ignition setup to put on the 1980 wagon, that way they are all the same. Might even take the center console since it is the medium high one. He wants $300 for the whole car, and it has a set of 6 spoke aluminum Subaru wheels.
