  1. OK. It has rained in Oklahoma way too much. I can't drive anywhere without almost drowning out my car. How do I go about putting a snorkle on the Soobie? 2" or 3", PVC or what? I am thinking 3" PVC. Do I run 2 filters, or 1? Do I leave it at the carb or move it out to the top of the snorkle? Any ideas sould be a great help. I almost drowned it this morning on the way to work. Hit a flood that was a lot bigger than it looked in the headlights, and deeper. 1987, 5sp D/R Wagon with a carb. Where do I start?
  2. 1987 4WD 5Sp D/R--23MPG avg. No matter where I go, if the A/C is on or not. What am I doing wrong? It is also carbed, Hitachi.
  3. Buy it!! Fix it!! I put my t-belts on wrong twice, only took 20 minutes to figure out which way to move the pulley.
  4. I'm loving the roof rack. Did you buy it or make it? I really need one for my wagon.
  5. Hell yeah, it is better and cheaper to drive what I have than buy a new one. No car payments, easy to maintain, and on demand 4WD, it just doesn't get any better.
  6. I have tried most of this. I have a big gap on my plugs, running 8.5mm high output wires, MSD coil, tune up every March, 87 octane gas, new tires, straight wheels, and I still only get 23-24 MPG. I don't care any more, this is the best car I have ever owned, given to me by me brother, in 3 years, I have put about $3K into it. It is one of the most reliable cars ever. I have also dicovered that I enjoy working on it, maintenence was a chore on my other cars, this one is a reason spend time with a friend. MPG is nice but, there is a line that has to drawn, I will NOT worry about milage unless it drops to 20 or less. Just drive and enjoy.
  7. My front bearings were $20 each, and there are 2 per side. The rear were $62 each per side, luckily, there is only one set per side in the back. I wish there had been a choice of $8.
  8. Here is a pic of it before any work. There are 4 wagon wheels, and they are now black. The rust has not been touched yet. The hood had to be replaced because it had rusted out on the driver side. Other than that, she looks the same. My daughter wants to paint it desert camo. It even has the center head light.
  9. That is so cool, I knew Turbone was a good guy. I really like the disk brakes I got ftom him, but I did not get any pads with mine. They are very easy to install, did both sides in a little over an hour. I love the way it stops now, very smooth, and solid. Good luck.
  10. OK, today we are doing a tune up on my daughters 1980 Wagon. I bought NGK plugs, have already put an ACCELL coil on it, and she is getting my MSD 8.5mm wires. I looked in the manual for the gap on the plugs, it listed .035 as max, I plan to start at .040", then go from there to see milage improves. Any other ideas are welcome. Also going to run some engine flush and then change the oil today. Might even get to the tranny and rear end. The car was parked for 10 years at least, and when we got gas to the carb, she started right up.
  11. my1987 Gl Wagon did the same thing. I put a switch on the dash to turn it on when I need it. The only problem I have is that the electric fan is on anytime there is power to the system. I put a switch on it too, when I am not on the hiway, I turn the fan on if the A/C is on. I would like to go back to everything being like it should but, now I can run the A/C from any button on the climate control box. Good luck.
  12. I am thinking about changing the engine to a 2L or 2.2L. Does anyone make or have an intake for these engines set up for a carb? Preferably a Weber. I really don't want to add a comp to my car, or rewire it for all the stuff that goes with fuel injection. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  13. OK, just did some more painting on the GL. The black is spray on bed liner, the paint is OD Green. Just had to share. Enjoy.
  14. I use 87 octane here in Ok. I changed the thermo down to a 180 to do it. I get about 24 to 26 MPG. It is so much cheaper than premium.
  15. OK, I know this is a stupid question but, how do I remove the body side molding. I want to paint it, and get under them to make sure they are rust free and covered with paint before I put them back on. Thanks.
  16. OK, O'reilly's had the right one. The passenger side is in and the car rides great. I will do the drivers side this week. Thanks for all the info.
  17. I am having trouble finding rear wheel bearings for my 1987 GL 4WD Wagon. I have called every parts store in the area, and drove to one over an hour away because they said they had them. They did not. The bearings are cone roller bearing with a built in spacer. The part number on the bearing is 4T-CR1-0685. The number that the store found that might be it is 513056. If anyone has a source, please let me in on it. I have taken the passenger side rear completely off, and it will not be put back together until Monday. That is when the bearings will be in, they had to be ordered because no one keeps them in stock. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  18. I have been running a Blaster 2 for almost 2 years now, and my gap is .055". This car runs better now thatn when it was given to me. I have MSD 8mm wires on it. Had to buy the set for a V8, and had a spare set, that I now thinking of putting in the daughters 1980 DL Wagon. I have had good results with MSD, and will buy them again.
  19. I think that the strut has to go down into the cup on the hub. That should help remove some of the angle on the CV joint. Not positive, I just know that mine sits all the way to the bottom.
  20. I am going to replace the rear wheel bearing this weekend, replaced the front onw two weeks ago. I can't find anyone local who carries the drive shaft carrier bearing. Where do I look? 1987 GL Wagon, D/R 5 Speed, EA82 with a carb.
  21. I just redid the front bearings on my 87. They were not as bad as I thought they would be. I took the whole shaft off from the tranny out. Took the whole assy to a garage near me, they took them apart, and then turned my rotors while they were there, put everything back together, and only charged me $60. I will be doing the rear bearings this weekend, after I go get them. I don't think the bearings that were in there were ever changed.
  22. It is not going through axles or bearings that fast. This is the first time I have been in the bearing area, and they really needed replacing. The axle is a remanufactured one that I bought at the parts store, and it has a lifetime warranty, and they lived up to the warranty.
  23. A friend is looking at a 1991 Loyale. It has the EA82, no turbo, 5 Speed, push button 4WD. It has just had the timing belts replaced. The only reason it is for sale is that it is at a garage, and the guy that took it there has not come back for it, and brought no money to pay for the repairs. So he did the paperwork through the courts to get the title, and is going to sell it for the costs that he has in it, plus a little for himself. Does anyone have any idea what this car is worth? I don't know. It is white, blue interior, the only rust that I could see was on the back drivers side fender, and it was from a rub that removed part of the tail light. The interior is in good shape, no tears in the seats, carpet was all there, no stains that I could see. Power windows and locks. The only thing that I saw that I did not like was the 4WD system, I like my D/R. Than.ks
  24. Last weekend, ther was a new noise from my Subie. First I thought it was the brakes. Changed the pads but, that didn't help. The noise only happened after about 5 or 6 miles. After research, I figured out it was the front bearings. The parts store (O'rielly's) only had one on hand, they had to order the other three. The parts were here on Tuesday, and I took the front end apart on Monday night, getting ready for it. I took the shafts off with the hubs, since I don't have any way to remove them where I live. Took them to the garage, they took the drivers side apart, and the bearings were totally covered in rust, and they rolled very rough. Took the shaft with me to the parts store, since it was starting to click when I turned to the left, and got it replaced for free (lifetime warranty), pickep up all the other stuff that I ordered, bearings, timing belts, oil pressure sending unit, and went back to the garage. Put everything back together, took it all home, put the car back together and did it in good time. Finally, the car rides smooth again, and my milage went up to 27MPG!!! I will put the rear bearing on this weekend, and the timing belts, and then I should not have to do anything else to it for a while. I got most of my info from this site, thank all of you so much. BTW, that is the best milage I have ever had with this car.
  25. OK, got the 1980 running on Monday. The gas tank is cleaned out, and so far so good. Now we need a passenger rear tail light assy, if anyone has one, I am very interested. The car was parked for over 10 years, and as soon as we got gas to the carb, it started up and ran like it was just started yesterday. There are no leaks on the engine, it was parked over night on a friends new concrete floor, and there was no puddle after I drove it out. If anyone know any neat tricks with this car, put them here. Thanks.
