Fuel pump probs--89 RX......FIXED w/update
how do you add a ground wire? are the GLs and RXs similar in mechanical operation and design? I think I may be having fuel pump probs in my GL... but if adding a ground would fix it then i'll go for it.

the grinding sounds kinda serious..... does it make that noise when you're sitting still, or only when you're moving? And are you sure it's carbie? they started putting SPFI in their cars in 88... but maybe it's because of where you live? I dunno... but my old 93 Loyale used to make a gridning noise too, but it didn't change with revs, and it only did it when sitting still. It was because it had no diff oil.. lol. Maybe it's the distributor making that noise? next time you hear the noise and you're sitting still, get out and look for the noise under the hood. Jordan

fouling #3 plug
I dunno about a rebuild..... it only has 162,000 miles on it and the lady I bought it from didn't put cheap oil in it and always changed it on time. and if it needed a rebuild, it'd be smoking. It doesn't smoke hardly at all. So I'll see how much resistance the #3 wire has and I'll get back to you. Thanks guys. Jordan

My 87 gl feels like it's running on 3 cylinders again. I put new spark plugs in, but not new spark plug wires. it's the #3 plug, it's just not firing. Do you think that after the first plug stopped firing, the new plug temporarily fixed the prob but after a while even that wouldn't fire? the wires don't seem to look that old..... distrubitor? the idle is becomming eratic too. maybe I should check for vacuum leaks? thanks for any help Jordan

and make sure you aren't trying to put it in upside down.... lol. thanks for the information guys..... i just found out a tranny mount is $91. jeez..... that's a bit much. think i'll stick to duct tape.

i don't think i have that valve..... i didn't see anything behind the steering pump... maybe it's only on fuel injected engines? I also can't find the darn idle adjust screw..... i looked for it in Haynes and found it in the book..... but i just can't find it. Any suggestions? what else could my high idle problem be? Thanks for any help.

Weird Electrical Problems.
my right front parking light won't come on and neither will my right front turn signal, which has a new bulb... and my rear "night lights" don't work either.... could the problem be what you guys are talking about?

you gotta problem with us Tennesseans boy? lol..... how do you smoke the tires in 4 hi? i can't even smoke mine in 1st gear... lol. I think that calls for a new fuel filter.... are they supposed to look dark brown?

does it run smoothly? if your timing belt was even a notch off, you'd definitely know it.

i took my spare tire out from under the hood and saw a small rubber thingy on the back of the engine..... i took it off and found a big rusty plate. What is this thing?

I picked up some NGK at nappa, gonna get an NGK disty cap too... and pick up the wires later because they had to order them. I also noticed the tube going from the cat to the intake hose of the carburetor was ripped. what exactly does that thing do? and where is my ASV? thanks for the help.... my baby should be back on the road in no time ;] Jordan

the wires they gave me weren't long enough, so i just put the old ones on..... i'm gonna have to buy some new ones today and see what happens.... maybe that's the problem... i'll keep you updated

searched, no luck....
My 87 gl seems to have quite a fast idle, 2000 rpm, at start up and will not even kick down. Even after the car is warmed up, it still idles at about 1500 rpm. and also... could anybody explain to me in great detail how the Hitachi carburetor operates and where are all the adjustment screws located and what do all the vacuum hoses going to the carburetor do? if the vacuum hose question is too much trouble to answer then you don't have to answer it.... lol. thanks for any replies. Torn Boot. Is cost about right?
Sounds right. but yeah, you can drive a long time with a torn boot. I drove about 15,000 on mine and even then it didn't make any noise.

ok..... changed plugs and wires, but i put the crappy autolite plugs in from autozone and a new disty cap too.... also cheapo. tomorrow i'm gonna go buy some quality parts and just keep those for spares. my question is.... since I put those plugs in.... i'm noticing a slight smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe... I'm thinking it's probably just because I have crappy plugs. it also seems to stumble at lower rpms more than it did before. maybe there's a vacuum leak in there somewhere from where he was moving stuff around under the hood?? and it still jerks alot when you give it alot of gas. engine mount? thanks for clearing this up for me guys.

An RX story.
I've spotted a white one around here.... it turns out it got sold to this guy Johnny who should know about this website cuz ever since my dad sold him his first one about 15 years ago..... that's all he'll drive. He's rebuilding the engine and replacing some suspension components.... it'll be a beauty someday

My 89 GL10 wagon failed smog!
hmmm.... it seems that older Subarus have a really hard time passing smog. I honestly have no idea why the hell it's like that.... maybe they're not meant to? lol. What octane gas do you put in it? Good plugs and stuff? Disty timing alright? maybe i'm just stating the obvious.... i'm new to this stuff. don't be fooled by the number of posts.. lol.
