I just read about the thermo switch. Is this the coolant temp sensor or something else? There's only 1 plug going to my radiator.

Hey guys, im pretty sure my electric fan on the radiator isnt working. The temps get almost up to the red on my car then I have to turn on the heater to full blast before it starts to cool down. How do I test the fan to see if its any good anymore? Or how do I wire up a manual fan switch? The car is an 86 GL wagon. Thank you.

Friday I replaced the timing belts and water pump. As soon as I got the timing cover off, metal pieces just started falling out. That idler pulley was hammered. Now the car runs like a dream. Thanks guys for the help.

Yeah, I have 3 day weekends so I should have enough time to do the belts and both pumps. Ive never torn into a Subaru engine before so this should be fun.

The cover is definatly holding that pulley in. Im not sure if the bolt came loose, but I can move it by hand. I found a timing set on ebay for $100. It has the belts, pulley, tensioners, cam/crank seals, valve cover gaskets, and oil pump gaskets. Hopefully I can get the job done this coming weekend.

Thank you. I did some digging today and tried the wooden dowel trick. Definatly coming from the driver side, so I took the timing cover off and found the culprit. Its an idler gear or something. I didnt even notice till the cover was off, but that idler or whatever it is is wearing a hole in my timing cover.

Hey guys. I got the car towed home this weekend and started to look at it. I pulled both valve covers off and everything looked good in there. Do you guys think I should change the oil again and mabey use the lucas oil treatment? Ive had good luck with it taking away ticks and such. Ill get a bottle of seafoam and run it in my oil too this week and see what that does.

The day after I bought the car I changed the oil and put in a can of this http://m.oreillyauto.com/mt/www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/RST0/00011/N0443.oap?ck=Search_N0443_-1_3136&pt=N0443&ppt=C1941, changed the air filter, and ran a bottle of seafoam through the fuel system. When it happened I shut the car off and called a friend to tow me home. It drove fine getting on the trailer, but thats all I drove it. Sorry about the noob question, but whats an HLA?

The night it happened I had the car towed to my local mechanic, he listened to the motor and said it sounds like something in the head came loose or mabey a snapped cam. It definitely sounds like its coming from the driver side head. I read a post that General Disorder wrote saying he had lifters that wouldn't pump up. Does this sound like the problem to you guys? I also read a post about TOD, and about replacing oil pump seals. When this happens, does oil leak from the pump onto the ground or what? I have a small oil leak at the driver vc, and at the rear main seal or oil pan, but not the oil pump.

Hey thanks guys. Its definitely not a tick, its a bad knock. My buddys suby was a ticker untill we put lucas oil stabilizer in it. Can you post a link to the TOD thread? I tried searching for TOD, but you need at least 4 letters.

Hey guys. I just bought an 86 gl wagon a couple weeks ago. The car ran like a top until monday when I got dropped off after work. I started it up and it had a horrible knock to it so I shut it off and went to check the oil, it was a little low but not much. So I had to have it towed home that night from Tacoma. That morning the car ran fine. What would cause such a sudden motor knock?

I know its bad to run different size tires on an awd vehicle, but can it hurt anything on a 4wd wagon? I have 3 185/70r13 tires and 2 175/70r13 tires.

Ok, thanks. The hatch I bought had a bunch of "carpenter in a can" sprayed in it so I couldnt really see what to do. Ill rip as much of that stuff out as I can tonight and get that swapped over. Are there any special tools I need?

Hey guys. I just bought an 86 gl wagon saturday. The back window was broken out so I went to the jy and bought a new hatch with glass. I put it on last night, but wasn't really sure how to get the lock out to swap mine in. Has anybody done this before?

The battery cables looked fine, the guy my dad talked to suggested cutting the terminals off the wires and using some of those copper ends with a hole in the end of it (just slides over the exposed wire then you crimp it on), and getting new terminals to bolt to those. The car seemed to run better afterwards but still doing what its doing. The alternator was a reman unit, so I need to have that looked at. Its got a lifetime warranty, so if that's the culprit it'll be easy to take care of even though I hate reman products. The knock sensor has a small crack in it so I'm gonna replace that anyway, thay aren't that expensive last time I checked. If I get home early enough tonight ill check for the body grounds. If there isn't one (I'm sure there is) is it ok to pull a random bolt on the motor and run a wire to the body?

Im back with more problems
Hey yall, hows it goin? My dads car a 91 Legacy, blinks a few lights randomly while driving. The battery, at oil temp, brake, and stop lamp. The lights go dim at random times also, but the alt, and battery were replaced not too long ago. Sometimes when my dad shuts the car off the car wont start up after. The starter will click once then nothing. It takes anywhere from a few minutes to a couple hours to get it to start again. We had the starter tested and it came out good both times. I just checked the trouble codes and the only one is a code 22 knock sensor. Can you guys help me trouble shoot these problems?

Is it like my dads 91 and they're under the steering wheel? Or are they under the hood? I remember him saying something about unplugged wires under the hood, but I don't know if he plugged any together.

Well its not the exhaust, my buddy hacked it off as soon as the problem started. That was one of the things I fixed yesterday. We got a cherry bomb, an exhaust adapter, and a couple of clamps. Only problem with that though is the muffler is sitting tight against the carrier bearing. I think the fuel pump is ok, I put a clear filter in under the hood and when the car is running the filter stays full. That's at idle and when we're trying to get it to run over 3xxx rpms. The car just dies when you unplug the maf. I have some maf cleaner at home though, I might spray it down with that stuff couldnt hurt. No codes either.
