  1. To refresh a quote from a USMB member, "These cars are 25+ years olds, they should be paying US to take them away." if you don't like the $500. number.. offer him $200? or keep looking...
  2. The plumber side of me can not keep me quiet.. yup, Gen. D & Monstaru have the right mix... this is a low temp solder job. I use standard solder for use on copper pipe, flux (No-krode mfg) and tourch. Pre-Clean area with wire brush (a 1/2" or 3/4" copper fiting brush works great), schmear with flux using an acid brush then hit it with the heat and add solder.. and yes.. lid off radiator. don't put too much heat near joints as yes.. you can make a leak.. I have fixed like 4 of these thus far.. no biggie. If you want to give it that little extra touch you can clean up the area, tape off and touch up wth black matching paint.
  3. From the dry-cities I head down Columbia on Oregon side, take 205 North to I-5 and jump over at Longview and catch hwy-30 but I-5 Highway is screaming along so another trip, I did take HWY-30 out of Portland and that was a nice drive as it wasn't the huge free-way, good wide road, pleasant and my tom-tom made navigating easy to get to hwy-30. Besides if you do Hwy-30 you can stop by St. Helens and see where they filmed some of the, "Twilight" movie.... I took my teen girl to all the film spots (house, dress shop, alley, Bloated Toad,) ... I am, the best dad in the whole world! but I guess your probably NOT into THAT:mad:.. so just drive by...
  4. Sorry Teach.. I guess I was day dreaming... Kennewick, WA aka.. Tri-Cities...
  5. Slipping over from the old school section... I picked up an EJ-2.2 motor sitting on a crate. $50. The intake maniforld had been removed and the valve covers too... so figure I would take a stab at it. I know the guy who was selling it and he said his dad was going to put the motor into a small airplane.. in the box of parts was a Turbo... figure from an older roo... but I got thinking... did they make a EJ-2.2 Turbo? or was that some kind of mod he was going to do to the engine? so I guess the question is... does the EJ-2.2 come turbo and if it did how would I tell the difference as all I have is a motor with none of the fuel rails or wires etc.. just a motor stamped EJ-2.2
  6. Hey Mugs, Mike (Indrid cold) , Sorry I havn't e-mailed you, busy.... Appreciate info you gave me regarding packing gear etc.. , still digesting and looking over my gear and making changes. Will be lighter but no way near what you do... 43 days left.... check your mail...
  7. If your in the Tri-Cities as in Richland, Kennewick etc.. then expect a 2 hour drive to any real camping with pine tree's.. short of developed parts along the river. There are some back country roads, personal hide outs in the desert that you can go with friends etc.. If your into pine trees than try Tucannon area. Drive out above Camp Wooten to the Panjab North Camp grounds, there are camping spots along the Tucannon River. Up about 14 miles from "Last Resort KOA" there are some primitave places that are great. A short cut is to cut out of Dayton and take "Hartsock Grade" More above Yakima, Ellensburg or go out into the Blues etc... Also, plan on attending WCSS #12 at the end of August... you and g/f will enjoy it. It is held up in Cashmere this year and woth the effort.
  8. 84 Brat, stock but with a 5-spd & disc rear brakes: Figure this was as good as any place to put it, sorry no pics as camera left at home. Saturday I threw my fishing poles and 13 yr. old daughter in the Brat and we headed for the trout ponds 2 hrs away up in Tucanon area. (Mountains with pine trees.) sucks but I basicly live in a desert, sagebrush area and nearest pine tree are 2 hrs away in any direction. Getting close to the fishing hole we took the "short cut" which is a steep gravel road but maintained (means it gets graded once or twice a year) ...kind of. Easing it into 4 high on the down side saved the use of the breaks and help keep control do to the dreaded washpan ruts that can make you loose control. My brother in law totalled his pick-up and 3 months off work do too them.... alcohal might have helped.. but miles from no where... it is a bad spot to have problems. We caught up with my sister and her husband turkey hunting along the river. My daughter caught 3 trout and had a good time enjoying the smell of pine and seeing critters in the wild. We fished till a storm moved overhead follwed with pounding rain and lightening and thunder that followed instantly with every flash. Sitting in the Brat my daughter was very concerned. It is a bit different view when you can look UP through the Brats sun roof and see the flash and towering pines sway over head. With rain coming down we headed back to my sisters camp and we stopped to pick up a hunter that was 2 miles from camp and dropped him off... he had to ride in the back but he was greatful. We called it a day and headed back up and over the steep grade in the rain with deer flashing by in our headlights. With the weather and deer count I took my time heading down into the valley and on hwy back home. This was one of those adventures that again, the Brat earned its keep. We were warm and dry with fish in the ice chest.... My warm and fuzzy moment.
  9. why not an almost plugged radiator? are you loosing coolant? leaking out as GD stated above? how about your radiator cap not seating/old etc... just tossing ideas here... oh.. and congrats on the 83 wagon... hope it was an extra special price...
  10. Arizona probably isn't noted for it's hidden stash of Subarus but I bet they are out there... and cheaper. Even local there are stretches when there is nothing available for 6 months... then there are dozens.... In my area a new front window is like $275. if done by glass shop... agree with other prices... It is a 22+ year old car... it is going to need time... and $ .... if they are hard to come by in the area... $500 tops... If your not in a rush I would beat the brush a bit and watch but it is your call and maybe that is the last roo in Arizona.
  11. I had the EXACT same thing... it turned out to be a pin hole, casting inclusion or? .... not saying it couldn't be cracked but regardles.... you need to be on the "wanted section" and looking for a new head & get a new Felpro head gasket... My pin hole was found on the seal area on the exhaust gasket where the exhaust pipe bolts too... so I would see a trickle of coolant coming out from around the flange adapter.... it may be possible to use an expanding metal epoxy pushed up into the hole but I just tossed the head and didn't want the fight of an unwinable battle... but you never know.
  12. ooooohhhhhh!!! so have you checked the little compartment in the back under the carpet! Broken window sucks but sounds like it's straight and will make a good runner.... also... throw those timing belt covers away, runs fine with out them but your call....(This topic is kind of like poking a bee-hive)
  13. The axle nut is NOT left hand thread... righty tighty-lefty loosie. Put tire on less center rim cap if it has one, lower car till weight on tire and loosen nut. Yes, at least 1/2" drive with some pipe slid down handle as a cheater, just stand out on the end of the 3 or 4 ft cheater and it will loosen. Sounds like it was over done a bit on the torque. If for some reason you can't put the tire on: I use a piece of ply wood, about 14" wide x 20" tall. (cut to fit) After car is jacked to height I rest the board against the hub and drill 4 holes to match the studs and a center hole for the socket to slide in onto the axle nut. I slip the board on with board just touching the ground and use this as a jamming tool (no bar across studs to hold back) I can loosen or tighten axle nut with car in the air. Quick, simple and it works. welcome to the site.
  14. I loved my 88 wagon... as above posts... probable timing belt, set screw on rotor etc.. etc... just wanted to say... something about those 88 wagons, spfi... they just love to go! Let us know what you find...
  15. Thanks GD.... I will do the voltage check as you described... I am just hoping to run a while and not mess with cars right now.
  16. Yes I did a search and GD on another post gave a solution to look for bad ground, corroded wires etc.. and will do that when I have time... but... 84 Hatch has been sitting a year, before I parked it I noticed low voltes on guage and figure would figure it out in spring...."spring" ... I dropped in new alt, New battery, reading 14.2 off alt as checked by hand meter.. but gauge is still reading around 8... so A. I can consider this a false reading on the dash gauge? Meaning the out put is 14.2 so delivery to battery and coil should be fine but the information on dash gauge is in error which tells me I can run with this false indication till fix gauge.. or B. is my hand meter telling me the out put is 14.2 from alt. but the gauge is telling me only 8 volts is coursing through the system and destined for dead battery. Or C. I am making this way to complicated.. Update: After an hour of driving and washing off the dust from the years slumber the gauge crept up to 10 volts.. still on the negative side. When I turn on the key the gauge jumps so it is responsive and appears to function... just not reading where I would like it too..... (will dig into tomorrow if time allows.)
  17. Yes..... great area but I haven't had the chance to play tourist in that town... so will check that out too. Leavenworth WA, is right next door for those who have the time and never been there... Touristy place but I love German food!
  18. If the motor wasn't in just the right position for what ever reason a gentle pull back with a straight claw hammer under the engine by motor mount is all I have ever needed to wiggle engine to get push rods to slide through the frame holes or to align bolt holes to install bolts on motor mounts ... no need to jack up on motor, it isn't that heavy.
  19. If your talking keeping dust and foreign things from dropping in... not many open holes on Horizontal motor... .... when I had Ford motor opened up (lots of open vertical holes for things to drop into-stupid v-motors) I used "press & Seal" seran wrap. It made a great protective covering when working above with tools or walking away from motor for the night.... could be used on any opening... If a concern of potential surface contamination I wipe sealing surfaces with Alcohal to assure no residue remains. my .02 cents.
  20. Checking with wife... trying to get a green light.. (we visit dead people Memorial Day-Monday) (prying Brat keys from Son's hand) If I can't get the 84 Brat from my loving son... grrrr... I will bring my 84 Hatch. (got tabs and insurance today...been almost a year) Twitch... If I can break away I will join you Friday and will bring my Dutch Ovens for the dinner.... and maybe a Sat or Sun night dutch oven dessert for everyone!
  21. ....................................... Fenix747 made the call, followed by a second for name, date and location. ...for a rogue gathering... this is looking official!
  22. He has a good point..... campground full... familys spending time together... lots of cars on the HWAY'S.... .. Mothers day is 9th of May... no way there... so possibly weekends before Mothers day, we aren't scared of the cold and probably be left alone in the hills.... June 4th or 9th....... warmer... good luck sorting this out or keep it on the Memorial day weekend. Keep us posted.
  23. Hmmmmm... so tell us... how long has it been since you did your timing belts? Noticed the fresh looking drip of oil mixed in... possibly front seals, cam/crank seal? No rush... seen um poor oil out till changed. Yea, one thing after another but when they get to be 20 years old they like to have some attention... I call it "bonding time".
