  1. I bought an 84 Hatch 2 years ago, it could have perfect compression or it could be a mess in there... I didn't test it.... didn't care too and wouldn't make a difference to me if it was 5% or 20% off, it runs, it will continue to run and when it doesn't I will get on this board and track me down another engine. Should it get to where the valve is compromising performance to the point it becomes obvious .. then.. o.k, I would do valves, or find another engine or subaru.... last one I got was cheaper then doing valves... my .02cents
  2. YES.... SELL IT TOOOOO MEEEEEE!!!!!!! Not sure where Warren is but I would buy that car right now... sight un-seen for what you paid for it. (but my account says different.) First, you probably did compression test wrong. Does it need a valve job... probably not..but? Yea... agree shouldn't run motor with bad valve but a cheap fix is too turn up the radio and put another 100,000 mile on the motor. If you want a cheap runner I think you have one, bond with it. Check the usuall, plugs, wires, rotor, cap, check for vacuum leaks, loose oil cap, and I like to run "Seafoam" engine cleaner through them when I pick one up. The EA-81 engine is bullet proof little unit, trust it. I get the impression you are new to the EA-81 motor??... The valve adjustments don't take too long but a bit more then 10 min. for me:-p You will need new valve cover gaskets, if they are cork coat them in automotive-Grey RTV (got idea from GeneralDisorder) let them dry over night and then take covers off and adjust, put back together...the valve cover bolts are like 12 inch torque or something like that... not much. I have two 84's, my favorite year!
  3. Others who are in the know (carbs) will jump in and help on this..... I confess stupid when it comes to carb stuff.... agree... sounds like choke. How is the timing? Fuel pump possible...but I tend to think they work or don't work kind of thing.... fuel filter.... possible... Fresh gas and use Seafoam in the gas if they have sat helps. Sounds like a great find..... .............
  4. hahahaha.... ahhh... love the 88 DL. Was my second subaru. I don't care what the others say that is a fun rig. Keep us posted and send pics!
  5. hey, welcome to the board. Yea...lots of great info here. Your like the lone wolf way over there... keep an eye at the junk yards for any finds etc... that you care to share with us . I hate to see good old Subaru's go to a crusher.... Baker Oregon has a couple pop up now and then but a bit far for me.... FYI: there are several gatherings with the subaru's, the big one is usually the West Coast Subaru show in July, from kids to older people show off their rigs... Generation 1 to current models... great time.
  6. I love this topic... it pops up every so often... and sorry to copy but I can't pass up this opportunity: That's what girl friend (wife) is for! ..... on the serious side I found a small soft sided cooler, tipped it on its end with opening up against the back of the seats facing forward.. With the top flap pulled back and wedged in behind the seats so it makes a little cubby box. After I shift I just reach back and nap the cup/bottle. The box is leaning back so it cups stay back and if they spill the fluid stays in the container... not perfect but it worked. I found the soft sided small cooler at a garage sale for $1. so price was right.
  7. , well. his mind set was, "keep it running regardless of damage"... sorry it will cost you to change that back if you want to make it a nice runner vrs just something to beat up. This may not be the same case but on my 84 Hatch I thought the switch failed.. long story short after I replaced, the Locksmith re-keyed and looked at the original key and said here is your problem, key gets worn and acts just like a bad switch... lesson learned for me was cut new key, lube igniton switch on my next old roo before I toss switch... my .02 cents...
  8. Unless your ignition switch is dangling wires assure it isn't just a bad key. YOu can pull the passenger door cylender, take it to the lock-smith, get a new master key cut and try the ignition switch... Silicone spray and a new key goes a long way. Sounds like you get some bonding time with the Brat... still say it was a great save... enjoy.
  9. Welcome to the Brat club. 5-speed it....... contact Bratsrus (jerry) he can give you the word...
  10. The first gathering doesn't have to be anything to wild. I am thinking Spring.... Early spring shake down drive kind of thing. Check the callendars for Ellensberg chamber of commerce, college or rodeo events that we could possibly tie into the gathering... or a good steak place.... will drive a long way for a good steak! Keep us posted.....
  11. mmmmmm... $500 dollars.... been awhile since I have seen a price like that.... Thats a good entry price on getting into a Brat... unless it is beat up and rusted... A broken front window will cost you $280. that is a major cost if broken so you can use that as leverage if it is badly chipped or broken... so if that is good then $500. keeps sounding better. Bad tranny... might as well put a 5 speed in....
  12. More time consuming then anything.... On the crank seal I used a 1-1/2" or 2" abs plastic fitting against the seal and used a long steel bar to press against fitting... I slid bar between motor and radiator and secured one end with my foot and pushed on upper bar with hand or lower bar with foot to push in new seal to flush with motor... noob way of doing it I am sure but it worked... The cams were easy... surprised even me... then putting it all back together... I didn't have a tension setter 19ft pounds on tensioner I think... so I used the calibrated elbow.... You should be fine... just the time problem if only rig.
  13. EA-82, 88 wagon. The kid (family relation) stopped by yesterday, I could hear and feel a vibration and Buzz.. coming from the engine.... I took my 3/8" plastic plumbing supply tube that I use as a stethascope to listen around and his Alternator is Buzing.. sounds like a bee-hive that just got poked by a stick.... it is also sending a vibration into the car that can be felt... I thought it was the fuel pump vibrating at first as it is very high speed/short wave length frequency kind of thing... It did not sound like a usuall bearing going out (grinding, thunking etc...) or loud.... nor evident from the front or back of the alt... the whole thing just kind of buzz's... Figure the alt. will be short lived as something is wrong ...... you can put your hand on it and feel the "Buzz"... ever hear of something like this?
  14. A cat in Ellensburg was selling an EA-81 about 3 weeks ago, check the for sale items....
  15. Yellow wires are NEG., black wires go to POS. as identified on the Coil. (per looking at my EA-81 in 84 Brat and NoahDL88)
  16. Very clean! Mmmmmm.....Elbow Grease.... Looks like a new Ditzy, oil pump & water pump....! yea.. more pics of what it is going in... With all the new stuff looks like alot of trouble free driving. I didnt' see you at the Yearly Subaru show last month?... I tried to give you a call a month prior as I thought I had your number, ... no one from Tri-Cities but me and a kid went to Stevenson WA for the West Coast Subaru Show. Great time...
  17. In-floor heating.... ahhhhhhhhh.... nothing beats it on a cold day, but yes... $$$$$$$$ If your house all ready has a boiler/Hydronic heating system this is very doable... but back too the $$$$$$. congrats on a pending bigger/garage...
  18. On the 84 Brat a tune up before WCSS-11, on the 84 Hatch tires, but for the year they have been purrrring like a couple of young kittens.... Love um.
  19. sent you a message... may be possible... Update: Yup, should be able to do that.... find me at WCSS, I will be the one in the Subaru.
  20. Not specific to your WRX but a great time to be had in the Subaru world is the WCSS (West Coast Subaru Show)! It is a yearly event held somewhere in the Northwest. The WCSS is an open invitation for all years and makes of Subaru's. This year it will be happening east of Vancouver along the Columbia river in Stevenson WA, at the end of August. Look in the "meet and great section," top line and all the info is there.
  21. my .02 cents here: The old saying: "Something is better then nothing." may apply here. If you have the time and talent to mfg., sell, package and ship then you don't need the Lisle corp. to help you out... if you want to put it into someone elses hands and say "send me a check every 6 months" or what ever... then that can work but you are giving up some of the $... but, if you let the idea die on the vine or go in half heartedly then it doesn't matter as if it is a good idea it will probably get copied. I am sure Lisle corp. isn't out to steal idea's. It sounds like a workable avenue for those who don't want to be bothered by the production, selling etc... stocking, re-working, mfg. selling stocking etc... they can't protect your idea anymore then you can as they have to put the tool into someones hands that can prove there is a market for it... they don't want bad publicity neither... so my guess is they are straight shooters regarding the use of submitted ideas.... they assume the risk and you get a check once in awhile... may not be a bad option. If you believe you have the means to do the process and believe every V.W. mechanic will want one of these tools then look for investors by putting advertisements in the paper/automotive magazine (possibly V.W. type) looking for investors of a new automotive tools etc... they come in, sign non-disclosure's and give them the speal. There are people in this world that look for nitches like this to invest in. Mfg. a set number, 100 or 200 unites, with the investors and see what happens, sell them..... you will still be sharing the wealth so too speak... but you will have more control and active part of the sales. Many products started this way, assembly line at a home till picked up by a mfg. who bought the idea outright. Nothing will prevent someone, somewhere from taking your idea, tweeking it and selling it. A patent would give you some protection but I have no prior experience in this field so that is all I better say. Making a business based on that tool from the earlier post is an interesting idea.... On the bright side my Brother-in-law is a VW mechanic and is always looking for quicker ways of doing things... so yea.. he may be interested in what your offering.... My wife has produced 3 products from our home, one idea sold in 3 states for a bit and then faded, the other flopped and the 3rd idea was stolen and mass produced and the people made a fortune from my wife's inspiration... (some people are just sleezy and that is that)... we didn't see market potential on the last idea and fumbled with it half-heartedly and before we knew it they were on the market from an aquaintance of hers and truely there is nothing you can do on a easy to copy design, you snooze you loose .... so possibly, something is better then nothing by going through a tried and true company like Lisle or grab the reigns and tie into the right people and mfg. and sell your idea. again, my .02 cents worth. Good luck.
  22. "REAL MEN OF GENIUS PRESENTS: Mr. Expando Foam mold bondo guy!" Anything is possible with these rigs... try the road less traveled and see if there is a reason it is! Good luck... and send pics of results.. good or bad!
  23. Try shooting some silicone spray into the air/idle mixer, (don't have my book and been 2 years since I sold my 88 so not sure of exact name) it is located front/left on throttle body injector (carberator) ... pull 5/8" hose off top and spray silicone into (hose runs from Mass air flow sensor to front of Throttle body (Carberator).. this is uaully a problem during cold weather but who knows? Try spraying with engine running, remove hose and give a shot into air mixer thingy (shuttle moves back and forth to mix air/fuel and can become sticky).. motor speed will very as hose is removed... Maybe sticky?... also, possibly time for some, "Seafoam". (see auto parts dealer) some in your gas, some in your oil before next oil change-read directions... Subarus love this stuff! Best Subaru mechanic is yourself.... these cars take a bit of learning but once you have figured them out then you realize they are some of the last few cars that a person can tinker with and not that diffecult... just start slow and do a "search" on the site and every thing gets easier after each battle. Nothing on these cars are really diffecult, timing belts included... just plan on everything taking 2-3 times longer and don't be in a pinch where you "need" the car the next day... as what can go wrong, usually does as you bond with your rig. My .02 cents P.S.: I spent 4 days this spring in Astoria to get away, stayed at the Cannery Inn at end of pier, fantastic hotel (almost $200 night) and what a great town. I was there 2 years prior for the Subaru show and wanted to go back when I had more time... Sitting over here in the desert, the ocean and tourist attractions was such a great change before it gets too busy with summer traffic. I went out at Gearhart ? (by golf course) and ran my Brat up and down the Beach... ahhhh... I hate the desert.
  24. Welcome... and sounds like youre having some good bonding time with the Brat.. The WCSS#11, West Coast Subaru Show this year is just East of Vancouver in Stevenson WA at the end of August... not to far of a drive to show your Brat!
