  1. A co-workers roo died on him. His carbed 87 wagon that he bought for cheap transportation is blowing coolant out of the tail pipe. He changed both head gaskets, still leaking so suspect cracked head issues.... I have a head from a 1988 EA-82 SPFI engine, will my spare head work on a carberated EA-82. engine. Also; no coolant in oil, no bubbles in radiator.. I suspect crack in head. +1 for all the info below, I will print up and get it too him so he can come up with a plan. Thanks again.
  2. Oh no..... you broke it!!!!! That is going to turn some heads!
  3. Say no more.... I really love free.. even if it is broken. Diamond in the rough... well... maybe not a diamond but you know what I mean:-p
  4. What decision betters the family? Also noted your 46, with a 4 year old! Good on Ya mate!

Yea.. we need pics! and with the snow.. we got alot here in the Dry-Cities too... just got my Hatch running and having a ball... Been years since I have been to Lew/Clrk. Enjoy the snow and your project!
  6. Yes, agree not a crack and probably along the lines of corrosion. The engine walls itself may have thined and possibly could be other issues... but ... the original heater core is still in the Hatch and all other connections look.. somewhat uneffected. Not enough reason's here too scrap a strong running EA-81. Thanks for the input and help. A quick , to Jerry, "Bratsrus1" in Yakima for tossing a head my way so I can get my roo back on the road. I now have only 7months till WCSS#10.
  7. Just a bump too move this too the front page... kind of had me stumped as I looked everything over and over too find the leak... any way... I posted the pic at the front to update.
  8. Thats what I am thinking.. cracked head.... no idea what else it could be.. nor why... The piston heads are black,so no steam in the cylenders so not coming in with fuel... so I guess I pull it and get it tested.... which makes my first Subaru headgasket change out just a practice run:clap:
  9. OH SNAP.... , EA-81 Hatch, 1.8 Changed the head gasket and coolant still dumping out of Exhaust manifold. grrr... I looked everything over reall good... figured it was just a leaky head gasket after I adjusted the valve clearance and found Head nut#1 loose so I put it too proper torque and figured it just started leaking a week later. The bad thing is the Hatch has never ran better... :-\ FOUND THE LEAK!!!! It was between the cast-iron head/flange adapter and my head. It wasn't untill I removed the adapter for the replacement head that I found it...
  10. welcome... rust and all! Treat rust with Rust-mort, maybe some primer and 7 cans of Krylon spray paint for a new color and it will look like ne...... well.. better.. Welcome and yea.. great place! FYI: WCSS #10 in August, Astoria, Oregon, look in the "meet and great" area...
  11. Yes it could go the distance. Look on Craigs list for a cheap tow dolly, license, tag it etc.. and then you can sell it after you get back ... or keep it. As long as the Subaru is lighter then the truck so the tail isn't waging the dog kind of thing. You should have sufficient mechanical skills too save your bacon and not depend on calling others too rescue you. What ever you plan on time...add a couple extra days in there for the gremlins should they attach themselves. On long trips I keep AAA-Delux, 100 miles tow range... used it twice thus far and nice to have to get too the next town kind of thing.
  12. Subaruparts.com, they are in Tacoma WA ... but not sure what is on the East coast (If I want Subaru Parts) . With my 84 Hatch I had the same problem so I just have them look up Brat parts.. same for my year of Hatch.... may work for your Hatch/Brat kind of thing.
  13. Hey, Should the head bolt studs need to be pulled to clean the head gasket surface area to replace the head gasket? Any re-torqueing required if I use new original Subaru gasket? or re-torque required if I use Fel-pro head gasket? Thanks...
  14. Well... I guess I get to bond with the Subaru .... so will take the head off this week and see what I find. Thanks guys... all good... even when it isn't great it's great to be in the game rather then sitting on the sidelines.
  15. Remove loose rust, scale and treat with, "Rust-mort" seal with paint or I used Pro-15 along the under side seam welds where it got crinked from poor jack placement... got that ino from other members and so far has done great... stop that rust.. I am a believer.
  16. It is leaking, down from inside the exhuast manifold, down the exhaust pipe so it was leaking out at the pic. location. I lowered exhaust, put 15 psi... nothing.. bolted exhaust back up and heated engine. Put 15 psi on the radiator, lowered exhaust and it was running green from inside the exhaust head, dripping out the now open exhuast pipe... also; no bubbles in radiator.. so..... am I looking at a probable bad head gasket? Freeze plug etc..? I know I am going to poke the hornets nest with this next comment but what if I were too blank off the heater core, run some "Barrs Engine sealant" and then hook heater core back up.... neighbor made the suggestion but probably not the best solution? I kind of would like to do a head gasket as never done one on the roo's.. so just kind of thinking what would be best.. but yea.... it's cold out there.. WHAAAA...
  17. o.k.... I get the point so possibly I did overlook the obvious... I will pressureize the coolant system this weekend and get in close and see what I can find... possibly the bubbling I saw was tiny exhaust leak bubbles as the coolant was seeping around.. so will take another look... man.. it's cold out... will post answer when I find out what it is.... Thanks guys...
  18. yea... leaks when it builds pressure, stops when it cools...
  19. First, Merry Christmas eve, ... and I hear sleigh bells out in the distance so I best put my tools down... Coolant leak on my 84 Hatch, EA-81, 225,000 miles. Suspected from stud, maybe drilled out from previous owner (you know, Heli-coiled but drilled too deap and into water jacket), but when stud was removed it had never been pulled before and came out dry, so scratched that off the list. See pic at arrow point it bubbles between engine head and exhaust flange area... so suspect out of exhaust path, so is this the air intake cross over gasket or head gasket? No other visible leaks on top running down etc as all new hoses. I can SEE it bubble from the arrow location... still runs great just leaves puddle in the driveway... oil is clean... I havn't checked for bubbles in the radiator... so... ideas?
  20. You are talking about one of his two, "Hatchbrats" .... (he is one with the Subee's) he mix's, matches, makes, twists and add's things :-p so yea, he probably just added those for looks as the top is a Brat and lower part Hatch... I finaly drove over too have a look...
  21. Citrus clean: (citrus based cleaner) about $9 to $10 a gallon I think. Suppose to be safer on the human then the hard chemical cleaners and less harmfull in production and use too the enviroment.... I suppose that could all be a bunch of garbage but makes me feel good. Takes a bit more scrubing and buy brushs and rags and squirt bottles but does work. I do use carb cleaner/engine cleaner on the tough jobs.. but try to avoid them as target orgon is kidneys, liver etc..
  22. I remember some earlier posts about using a Dremel tool, cutting the side of the plastic heater housing, pulling out the heater core, putting the new in and epoxing the side back on... saving alot of time..... although I have never done it... nore sure if this applied to the ea-82's... so this is the part I say do a search on the subject.... and wish I had solid info...
  23. It depends upon what your going to do with the car, how handy you are with tools and what you expect it to do for the money. If your looking for transportation... they are good runners. I have a 1988 with the push button... I happen to like it but I do little off road but do alot of back road driving and it's great just to go "push" and there you go. The age is something that has to be considered and if you do your own mechanical work as it is getting to the age that even with all the new things... it will need TLC. If your looking for something too tear up, then it is better to start with something that is cheap and you put the sweat and tears into building it up. Right now your paying for the time that someone else has invested, if you can afford this cost of the car. (Just read above post by G.D. and he is right in regards that I payed $160 for my 88', swaped engine for $200 and been running for the last 2 years...but recently now sick, so my time was worth finding one that needed work, cost was way cheap. This would make a great second car if it runs out o.k. Always of course bring down the price a bit. No one can really say what is or isn't a good deal. Seems o.k. I guess, lets see what some of the others say.
