What kind of Kia and what kind of Mazda? Also, how new are you looking. Based on the 81 wagon I'd say if you can find a low mileage early 90's AWD Legacy they are awesome. Very reliable and go well in the snow. With out knowing lots of details it gets hard to say. If I find something that seems like an awesome deal my rule is don't do anything today unless you really have to. If you wake up tomorrow morning and still really think it's a good idea then go for it. Keith

question about turbos
RallyKeith replied to junkyardgabe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ha ha, dumb me. He didn't ask what turbo motors. Oh well, I don't think there is any difference in the turbos used through out the years, and yeah 106k should still be good enough to use without worry. Keith -
Well, its only snowing lightly where I am now, but by the end of the day they are calling for 2-4", and by the end of tomorrow 6-14" :bday: Since the RX is still in pieces I'll be out doing 300hp AWD doughnuts in the STi Not sure what it will do having LSDs on both ends Maybe I'll just open the center diff and let it all fly to the rear. That would be some serious doughtnut action It sure may hurt every month when I have to pay that car loan, but it's days like today that make it all worth while! Keith

question about turbos
RallyKeith replied to junkyardgabe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Depends on who you ask. The early motor used a little different electronics system, with the MAF being the most obvious difference. They weren't rated with quite the same power as the 87-90 turbos, but you can crank the boost on the older ones without the computer cutting fuel. On the flip side, the early motors, 85-86, have generation 1 heads which are know for cracking. Some would say the ideal motor is an 85-86 with better heads put on, but that's debatable. Keith -
The Outback is a Legacy station wagon with some options. The Forester on the other hand is a small sized "SUV" car. The Forester doesn't really cut into the Outback sales, it Cuts into Explorer, Honda CRV, and Toyota Rav4 sales. The Outback is a bigger vehicle but at the same time should drive better than the Forester. Keith

http://www.joesusedautoparts.com/ It is located a few miles east of New Ringgold on route 895. I'm not really sure how to tell you to get there. You could take the northeast extension up to allentown then take 22/78 west to 61 north to 895 east/north. I'm guessing from Faust's we might head out 78 and up. Otherwise you could go 422 through reading to 61 north to 895. Hope that helps. Keith

Well I hope this is the place. Faust Auto Parts 683 Grange Rd, Allentown, PA 18106 Phone: (610)395-2829 http://mapsonus.switchboard.com/bin/maps-maponly/usr=~3fce606a.b7372.813.6/c=1/refsrc=SB.newsb/isredir=1/ From the NORTH EAST you'll probably be taking 78 west to 222 south. Take 222 south until you get to a traffic light with a hess gas station on the left. Go through it and turn right at the next road, which I think is the next light. From the NORTH WEST you'll probably want to take rt. 100 south/east to 222 north. Head north until you pass the traffic light to turn into Walmart (On the right) The next light should be for a left side road which will be the one you want. I'll drive past here tonight on my way home from work (The joys of working in allentown but living in Reading) and make sure I've got the right place and the right directions. Keith

Well, I'm leaving at 9am tomorrow (wednesday) morning with a van full of crap to deliver to my brother. I'm probably heading home again saturday morning. We'll have some time to kill friday while his wife is at work so I thought it might be fun to run out to a junk yard to see what we find. I'm not looking for anything in particular, except my dad is now looking for a good alternator for his 91 Loyale wagon. I'll see how things go and maybe I can stop by saturday. Keith

I would actually not go to a chain muffler shop. 90% of the time they will only install a cheap generic muffler that will hurt your cars performance. Find a small exhaust specialty shop and talk to them. You could also just go to Pep Boys and get a nice flowmaster and install it. Flowmasters sound really nice and if you get the right series of muffler they aren't that loud. Keith

You have to pull the timing belts and covers to do it. While your at it, it is best to replace the water pump and timing bellts if you can afford it. Also, you must use a new "Mickey Mouse" seal for the oil pump. They call it that because of how it looks. It's just the seal from it to the block. Keith

Ok, VERY important thing to check while doing all of this. Once the flywheel is lined up so the #1 cylinder is at TDC (Top Dead Center) pull off the timing belt covers and make sure the marks on the cams line up with the notches on the back half of the timing belt covers. That side could have jumped a tooth on the timing belt and thrown every thing off. If that is the case it's time to replace your timing belts, and doing that will line up the ignition timing again. ? driving fast/looks
RallyKeith replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It was only a 2wd, and I don't remember. I know that I was past where the numbers stop on the Speed-o. This was about 7 or 8 years ago so I don't remember. Plus, it really is about a 10 mile stretch that we used to reach the final speeds. Keith -

04 STi 147 :moon: (And I would have gone faster if it wasn't electronically limited) Seriously, you guys are scaring me with how slow some of your SPFIs seem to be. I had my 1985 EA-82 Carbed GL wagon with the 3 speed automatic up to 120! I even did it racing a 4cyl susuki swift! For the record, it was about a 10 mile stretch of flat straight road with nothing more than a traffic light that happened to be green. 88 RX was only ever up to about 100 (traffic Limited), but that car really pulls hard off the line and out of a corner. I've never tried to see how fast it would go. Anyhow, Ricer really started with the crotch rocket moter cycles back in the 80s. The super fast street bikes were all coming from Asia, where rice is a staple in some diets. So, they started calling the little crotch rocket bikes rice eaters. Then it transformed into what we have now. All Show/No Go = Ricer Keith
