tighten your lugnuts...
My thread entitled "The Grand West Hollywood Misadventure" or something was caused entirely by loose lugnuts. I can't stress enough how important having them torqued down is. The minute of work is worth not having to run around LA at midnight and losing tons of money.

Crank pulley falls off
Tightened it again today, this time in 1st gear and the wheels blocked. Strange whirring still there and coming from the crank pulley, but I will try using Locktite. I was worried some permanent fastener had been destroyed, like what can happen to loose wheel hubs.

Crank pulley falls off
My engine makes a whining noise, sorta like an electric drill, goes up with the RPM. I thought it might be an idler pulley going bad. And it stalls..... so, to allow myself to look at the belts and such while moving, I turned up the idle.... accidentally dislodged the throttle cable.... the point is: when I reattached it, I revved her up to about 5K to make sure the gas pedal would work properly, but then all the warning lights came on, and the mysterious whirring stopped. Because the crank pulley had come off. On the surface that contacts the engine there is an indentation that looks like a nub on the crank should fit into, yet the crank has no such thing (and it does not look like one used to be there either) so I figured it just wasn't bolted on tightly enough and put it back on, although I couldn't get it as tight as I want because trying to do so just cranks the engine. Once everything was back in place I fired her up and held her at 5K for about 5 seconds and sure enough the same thing happened again. So...... what the heck am I doing wrong?

Aerodynamics
Really!? It sure doesn't look very aerodynamic, but neither does the Mercedes C Class (cd in the low .20s) That would be super cool if my wagon really is that good. One day when I have it running properly I'd like to do the string tassel test to identify weak points and modify them.

Dies at Idle
No, I have not cleaned out the idle circuit. And I'm somewhat ashamed to admit it's because I don't know what that is. Is it a tube in the carb or something electrical?? So far all I have done is used some carb cleaner while the engine was running (back when it would idle) haven't turned any screws or anything.

Dies at Idle
Annnnnnnnnnnd, bump! Still not sure if I have found the ADV or not. More info: when car is super warmed up, coasting off the freeway, she will idle fine for a while and not sputter. Would that make it something other than the anti diesel valve? Would it be bad to turn up my idle screw a little?

Aerodynamics
In my opinion, airflow around the vehicle is the single most important factor in increasing fuel economy. Think about how hard it would be to stand up in a 65mph wind, now multiply your body mass by 5 and that's about the frontal area of your car. A lot of power goes to not just moving the car, but thousands of cubic feet of air per second. Even a high powered V8 car can get good mileage with tall gearing and a slippery shape (Corvette) Look at all the highest mpg cars ever built, they almost all have lower than average .cda's

LMAO! Be honest, did you go out and do that just to prove me wrong? Holy crap that was funny!

About Buying JDM Engines
Ummmmm, no.... the only thing we got that you didn't was EA81 hatches. America pretty much receives the piss of the mix on everything else automotive.

Aerodynamics
I see I'm not the only ecomodder forum user here Yes, XTs pwn wagons in the cda department, but epically fail when it comes to hauling Christmas trees. One day I'll get one though to mess with. Mirrors are an easy fix. Get rid of 'em. For now my passenger is just folded in, but I'll remove it soon. Other plans for me in the future are rear wheel skirts and all wheel pizza pans, coroplast underbody cover, grille block, fuel injection conversion, possibly a 3.70 swap and port + polish (GF's dad is a CNC machinist woot) LLR tires, couple inches lower. Honestly an EJ22/18 (or EJ15!!) swap would probably be easier and more efficient, but I'm an EA lover. I'll mess with a Legacy or Impretzel when I have more money. As I've only gone through a couple tanks so far, I'm still experimenting with how RPM vs. speed effects my mileage. 55 should be better than 65, but then I need more throttle.... stupid carb! I drive 300 miles a week to work, so it shouldn't take me long to figure that one out.

Aerodynamics
Somehow, for some reason, there doesn't seem to be a thread devoted to aerodynamics.... That I could find anyway.... So, let this be it. Since I have become obsessed with fuel economy (57.51mpg in the Tercel baby!) I would like to experiment with modifying the EA82 wagon, which appears to be only slightly slippery than a Volvo brick wagon. Currently I am at 29.5mpg in the wagon..... not bad by most people's standards, but I'd like 40 a lot better. I know it can be done. I will post any results here when I get the numbers. For now, does any body know the Coefficient of Drag of an EA82 wagon? Can't find it on the net, since nobody seems interested in it : (

Dies at Idle
Is this thing my ADV?? It's the only thing that even remotely sounds like what the book describes, and is the only thing on the carb with a wire, but it points out of the passenger side of the carb.

christmas pictures
Dude, I made a thread about this car years ago! Never had my camera when I saw it though! Was that by the Pit Stop Tavern?

Dies at Idle
Hey, thanks for the info. I am out of the country for a few more days, but I'll be able to tackle the problem when I get back. Since this car is not my daily transportation I can take as much free time as I want to figure out how to fix everything the right way (rump roast opposed to my old way of fixing it just enough to get me to work and calling it good, ha)

What kind of gas milage do you get?
My 5MT 2WD carbed 86 GL wagon did 28.4 mpg. Albertsons 87 with some Seafoam and Lucas additive in there. This was my first calculation, used the same pump and setting. Drove moderately economical in town and 65 on the freeway. I hope to get 40 after I hypermile it.

Dies at Idle
Ferox, I looked into my copy of How to Keep Your Subaru Alive, and it also said the cause of an engine not wanting to idle (but run fine at higher RPMs) was likely the anti-diesel valve. It said the ADV is a hexagonal, thumb sized brass thing on the drivers side of the carburetor pointing to the left headlight, but when I searched there, I could not find anything resembling that. But, I also have a blasted AC compressor blocking part of the view. The book also said that I should hear a clicking sound when the ignition is on and the ADV is disconnected, then reconnected. Since I could not find the valve obviously I didn't do that, but I do hear a constand noise coming from the PASSENGER side of the carburetor. I did not see anything moving or obviously making noise. Sounds kinda likea fuel pump does, but it could also be interepreted as a constant rapid clicking. This is an 86 Hitachi carb, which should be covered by the book, but the words there and what I'm seeing just don't match up..... ??? Could the anti diesel valve be somewhere else?

Just purchased 82 GL Wagon with 54k in NC!!!
Dude, pics! Is it red by chance? Saw a mint condition red 82 at a dealers years ago.

what's it worth?
SakoTGrimes replied to Ceejus's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'd say $500-600 on the count of the CEL, rust spots and pissing parts. Looks like a decent car otherwise.

I have a subaruuuuuuuuu!
Never did live in the People's Republic of California, but moved from Medford to GP last year. Those dice are pretty sweet, aren't they? Came with the car.

I like me some fuel injection
Couple "newb" questions for the guys who have done it 100 times..... When going from carb to FI, is it easier to convert or change out the whole engine? Lots of wiring involved? Is MPFI harder to find, and is it significantly more efficient (fuel wise) than SPFI? If I did change to FI, would anybody want my carb stuff? About how much does it cost? I'm just 2WD and my main concern is fuel economy, don't really care much about power since I drive like a granny anyhow. Now I'll go and do what I should have already, search search search.

Dies at Idle
But only at idle, warm or cold. Runs perfectly otherwise. I'm sure this is a carburetor issue, but before I start turning the wrong screws the wrong way, could someone point out which one I should be turning? 86 EA82 stock carb

I have a subaruuuuuuuuu!
Seafoamed 'er, got the huge white cloud, haha, my neighbors already hated me I'm sure for what my diesel truck did. This car roooooocks!

I have a subaruuuuuuuuu!
There was a good roof rack and bike rack on the back, but I've already taken them and the rear wing off (aero drag) Couldn't resist attempting to ford the big mud pit right next to my house and got stuck. Haha, luckily a whole bunch of rocking got her loose. never gone "wheeling" 15 feet from my house before! Car runs very well, exhaust sounds great, very throaty yet still quiet, 213K, slight TOD, everything works I think. I'm very pleased with her so far.

What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
I took her though a mud pit. It's 2WD and got stuck. Rocked her out.

I have a subaruuuuuuuuu!
Yes! It has been approximately 1 year and 3 months since I sold the Brat. I've acquired 3 diesels (all sold/traded now) and a Tercel since then, and I've been urging to hear that boxer sound ever since. Well finally today I made a deal with a gentleman to trade my rusty 240D for his 86 2WD 5MT GL wagon. Carb, runs very well, only like 216K or so and in pretty good shape. This will sort of be my ecomodding car that I'm not afraid to scratch or get too dirty (The Tercel is the Concours Queen). Fighting off my sure thing hangover in the morning to go get it will literally be the first thing I do in this new decade. I am sooooo happy to have a Ru again. Oh yeah, new clutch, too. Pics will come soon.
