Coolant leak, exhaust, Leak found! Now what?
Skip replied to Indrid cold's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm sorry the only way I can see leaks from the area you depict are from the head being cracked. Almost unheard of ?? You do not have access to a coolant system leak down tester do you? -
Thanks to OB99W I have the diagrams he speaks of and I agree with his statement. Looks like the only way, aside from some corrosion, that the P0031 code can be thrown - alone is when the heater element in the 02 sensor goes bad. The diagram shows the two front 02 sensors OB99W mentions. Heater grounds provided by the ECU at pins 4,5 and 6,7 as shown.

One bit of help would be to get a height adjustable seat out of a GL 10 I'm about 6' 2"" and that sure helped in my GL. Rake the seat back back and jack up the height. Plus the cushion is "plusher?"

Easy question: Which A/C compressor is this?
Skip replied to psychsurf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
psyc, you have not described the problem except that the AC doesn't work and the comp is bad. The pulser is seen hanging in front of the comp pulley in the factory installed units. This sends pulses to the AC control unit, without this pulse the AC will not function. I do not know how common this type of protection circuit is, just wondering if your tech knows about it. Just a thought, sorry if it's NA (Not Applicable) -
or find a way to get a deal on 6800 Li Ion laptop bats like the Tesla Roadster has.

I hope your tech knows about the pulser cicuit on these and hasn't mis diagnosed the comp problem. -
P0031 Oxygen (A/F) Sensor Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 1) Santa was kind enough to bring me an early Xmas gift... CEL with the error code above. Car is a 2003 Legacy OB VDC (with the H6) ~ 70 kmi. I have searched through my .pdf versions of the FSM but can not find the wiring for this front 02 sensor's heater circuit. 1) The 02 sensor could have a bad heater. (my bet) 2) The fuse for this could be bad .. but why did it blow? 3) Some charts refer to a relay for this heater it could be bad. What fuse block contains it and what location in the block is this relay. Yes I could lift the car remove the under cover find the 02 and then check the wiring for shorts. I could then check the resistance of the heater and if it's getting it's correct voltage. To do this I need to know which wires to the 02 sensor are for the heater. Please, if anyone has the wiring/trouble shooting section for this heater circuit I would appreciate a link or an email. Happy Holly Daze to all. Note: if you have ever seen the under hood layout of the H6, you will have an idea why I would like to systematically check this problem.

If / Then statement in jest if this is true "the frequency doesn't seem to change with speed," ? then "then it has a speedo cable. And it could be running out of grease" doesn't make sense. Maybe I'm corn-fused (v.easy todu) but doesn't the speed-0 cable's rotational velocity change in direct proportion to the vehicle speed? thus-lee(sic) the frequency of the flapping should change in relation to the vehicle speed? As I mentioned very easy to corn-fuse me. A simple test before tearing the instrament cluster out might be removing the speed-0 drive from the transaxle. Mount is shown here automatic--> where the slotted screw is located manual ---> in the rear location IF the Noise quits --- we have a bingo!! Hope this helps.

Quoteth the Nipper "When we installed fuel cells in existing electrics" Please sir, will you link to these installs. I bow to your overwhelming knowledge and experience!! I, for one, would like to see this technology in existence in present day technology. Your input is most appreciated, sir.

Going along with John Historically, over the years that I have been a member, there have been dozens of Subarus fixed with the relay. No one has posted back that the fix failed after xx number of months / years. I personally have had to do it to three of mine. I have never had to change a starter. This admittedly statically inadequate observation is by no means meant to be a fix all for starter problems. The test shown on the above linked to post will help one decide whether they want to pull the starter and do a rebuild / replace or add the relay and fix what may be an issue with the ignition switch contacts.

Pulled the CEL codes... Now the fun starts
Skip replied to psychsurf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm on Cougar's team here. At least find this relay (way up under dash above the ECU) Maybe "Fonzi-ing" the ECU closed the relay. -
"The local Autozone had a coil but when installed it wouldn't even start the car" ???? this 87 XT has probably has a hot wire MAF'd MPFI system, so when you changed the coil did you leave the original bracket and it's ignition amplifier in place? The bracket needs grounded to work. I'd throw my money at NGK plugs and wires.

Trouble shooting help sought

"Replaced fuel filter (under hood) Will replace other" Think about which filter would suffer first. If you decide to try this use some tool to pinch the line from the tank as it will flow fuel when removed. "The heat riser tube is connect and intact." There also is a thermo valve in the snorkle that opens to allow warm air into the air flow. Does it open when cold?
