Maybe this should be in another forum? see the full story custom brat -
How do you check compression with engine out?
Skip replied to edrach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ed, have a look at this link Building and Using a Leak Down Tester I built one and it worked fine but.... I have been known to have bit more "stuff" laying around than some people do. ..................... -

Sorry Jim, I don't know about your 95. The electric VSS (if equiped) and speedo cable both connect at the place on the diff. From the pictures on the thread you can find out which you have. Sorry it didn't help more. -

PCV system issues, modified ea-82t
Skip replied to BoostedBalls's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The Autozone PCV valve is no doubt listed as the same one for the NA Sube. As the pressure builds positive in the manifold the valve is not designed to handle this "backward" as it may be pressure. This has been documented many times. Plumb as you may, please remember this positive pressure in the crankcase can result in blown seals. Sure sounds like a disconnected MAF or other major fault in this signal to the ECU. -

BB you say " I put in a new PCV valve" Was this an OEM or aftermarket? If OEM please excuse this question as... Many times mentioned - an aftermarket PCV valve is not the way to go on these cars. -
nylon, krylon The VSS on mine is just a Hall effect device, read very easy to turn, imagine a speedo cable needing lubed? I believe in my case the small connection link (thin stamped metal tang) broke and this jam caused the nylon gear to strip. No matter, it is a shame to have to pull the tranny and open and strip the diff to service this part. If FHI is so smart -- why not put the metal gear on the diff output and the nylon on an externally replaceable shaft? As it is, the metal gear which is on the shaft that turns the VSS, it has to be removed from the diff internal section even before changing the nylon gear which is on the output shaft. Again dumb idea for a device so important to the correct operation of a vehicle. I own over a dozen Subarus and this has to be one of the worst cases of under engineering I have experienced. Happy New Year

Looks like a great improvement, Dave Don't forget the headlight work opposite of domestic models. The main feed to the headlamps is positive battery voltage ( this connection is also known as the "common" terminal) and the hi/lo switch grounds the filament you want to illuminate.

Very well done Congrats to you Connie, and Andrew for his thoughtfulness. Happy Holly Daze indeed! -
from the look of the ehaust to the turbo it has atleast run? The exhaust running acorss the top of the back of the engine must cook the oil cooler. What is seen through the windsceen? Is this just a front clip with doors?

Joe says "There is also a terrible whistling at the higher RPM - almost like a belt squeal, but since I can change pitch with throttle position, sounds more like something induction related." Could at this early age a cat be getting plugged and the whistle is exhaust gas coming out of a system leak ? Would this back pressure cause pre-ignition?

Glad the incident didn't cause any more grief than it did. Have a look at the holes in the wheel that was loose and make sure there is still plenty of meat where the lugnut seats. Off a bit, but I shop at a local boneyard where you can take your vehicle to the car in the yard that you are working on. I sometimes take my Brat, well on one trip, I walked across the yard for parts from another car. That afternoon upon ariving home (did feel a bit funny on the ride home - thought it was mud in a rim). I come to find a lug nut missing and the other three very loose! Evidently, some one thought my Brat was in the boneyard and was snagging the wheels!! I guess I spooked him coming back!! Guess I see why he thought what he thought?

I need help with an A/F meter.....
Skip replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hi Frank Inanutshell no... yes.. As mentioned the A/F meter is a simple voltmeter It is reporting the output voltage of the 02 to the ECU. It is not a variable output as some suspect but more of a digital output - not really but it outputs a high voltage when rich, low when lean. The bouncing you see is the way the ECU tries to maintain the proper stoichiometric ratio given the unit is in closed loop (i.e up to temp and not at WOT). Yes, with a Weber even without the ECU, the 02 sensor will show you the rich/lean state of the mixture and the bouncing will stop (the ECU is no longer controling the mix). This is a good way to see if the jetting of the Weber's different stages is ~ correct. But is no substitute for a good wide band setup. -

The wide band set up is going to cost significantly more. I keep the type you have on all my turbo'd cars. Another tip is to use a hose clamp to fasten a wire to the body of the 02 sensor, run this wire to a ground point close to the ECU's ground. Corrosion and rubber isolation mounts can cause the exhaust system to isolate itself from ground. The 02 sensor needs this ground to communicate with the ECU properly. -
My method I've used for a few? (ahem) years. front - jack on the engine X-member as mentioned jack stands on the radius rod to body mount or "frame" rails. rear - jack under pumpkin, jack stands where rear sus. mounts to body good luck and glad to read you are being safe not sorry.

Peter I agree with you. There can be situations where one may miss the temp gauge rising quickly or reading incorrectly. Some old Subes would read normal to low if coolant loss (blown turbo cooling hose - my case) caused the level to fall below the temp gauge sensor - no coolant on the sensor -> incorrect reading. A turbo motor is a terrible thing to waste (any motor for that matter) so I installed an auxiliary 12V sounder (Rat Shack 5 George Washingtons) triggered by a thermoswitch (NAPA around 25 GWs). The adjustable switch has a capillary tube which I taped and insulated to the lower rad hose. Figuring it would have coolant the longest if a leak occurred. I set it to sound at about 3/4 dash gauge reading. I unplugged the fan to force this semi over heat. When/if the sounder goes off, even an inattentive driver will most likely look for the cause.

No Accelleration Power + Engine Sputters in 2nd gear (auto)
Skip replied to 211's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry guys, guess I'm kinda new to these 3AT problems ah-hum may I politely say you could be wolfin' up the wrong conifer i.e. all I'm say'in No power off the line -> is it in first gear? Try launching with the shifter in "2" while moving shift to "D" does it down shift? Yes? Well then you are normaly starting in first gear. as for Bad vac mod => will suck ATF into the intake and make clouds of white smoke. Lowering the ATF fluid level like Dave T said. BTW I have not seen one "leak a little". Gov. problem - will not up shift when it should. Governor is a rotatating centripetal device, as it spins faster a shuttle in it's body "shuttles" to a position allowing fluid to be tranfered to the shifting clutch. If what you say is happening at the speeds you infer. I am sorry to reiterate u b bakin' up da wong twee. ___________________ okay Doc, I go take my meds now -

How about a timing belt jumped a tooth? 1) How old are they? by chance does it have a cat? 2) Could it be plugging up? 3) When was the last time the plugs ect were examined/replaced? 4) Wild hair guess (WHG) has anyone had the distributer out?
