  1. Also, doesn't the year of the transmission affect whether the TCU engages the clutch pack when you shift the lever to 2?
  2. That's what I want to do. Someone over at XT6.net used a Kenworth light dimmer to generate the PWM signal, but he posted that he had done it and didn't give any details. I've started researching LED dimmer designs as a way of doing it.
  3. hahaha! This is a joke, right? There aren't any major hills on Long Island, are there? I agree about the Loyale's snow performance, though. Mine was great, even with just cheap, used studs on it. Now that I have good studless tires (Toyo Observes) on my XT6, I feel like I could go anywhere as long as I'm cautious. Straight line traction under heavy acceleration is really impressive.
  4. Every time you see a Subaru on the road, you'll be thinking, "Those were the days..." Sooner or later, your girlfriend will get tired of you pointing out every Subaru you see and talking about how great your Subaru was. Then she'll start to think that sleeping on the ground wasn't so bad after all.
  5. That oughta add some low end torque!
  6. Thanks for the answer. I was hoping that the TCU would engage the clutch pack whenever the rear drive shaft spun significantly slower than the front, whether under power or braking. I just realized that I sort of mis-stated the question. It wouldn't really "send power" to the rear wheels, just link the fronts and rears through the clutch pack.
  7. I just bought my first 4eat equipped car, a '91 XT6, and I have a question about how the AWD works in braking, especially in snow since we might have some coming soon and I haven't found this topic addressed specifically. One nice thing about 4WD is that it helps with braking in the snow because it helps keep one set of wheels from locking up before the others. Does the 4eat AWD system do this too? If the rear wheels start to lock up under braking, does the duty C solenoid send power to the rear, evening out the braking like a 4WD system?
  8. Are you welding the passenger door to keep passengers out or keep them in?
  9. I actually like MR-2's. They're supposed to handle really well. Too bad that one has the retina-searing paint job, clown-like body kit and a broken suspension.
  10. In the regular bulb for that car, there is nothing blocking the rest of the reflector from either the low beam or the high beam filament, so both of them use the whole reflector. The only differences are the positioning of the filament, which makes the light come off the reflector in a different direction, and the wattage. If the HID arc is positioned correctly, then they should create the same lighting pattern as the stock bulb's lowbeam filament, only brighter. That's not to say that they don't create an unacceptable amount of scatter. The scatter pattern will be the same as the stock bulb, but just like the desired part of the pattern, the scatter will be brighter too. Dave: Are these bulbs rated as street legal? Have you tested them by following a friend or passing a friend in opposite directions to see if they're too bright for other drivers? If they're street legal, I might look into a pair myself.
  11. Probably the torque converter locking up (which it's supposed to do).
  12. I remember reading part of the book Crap Cars in a book store, and one of the cars it listed was the XT, which it criticised for having 4WD that switched on with the wipers.
  13. I've never had a problem with the parking light switch, and it does provide entertainment in the form of the confusion it causes. I also like the ability to just leave my headlight switch on all the time, because I've driven with my headlights on night or day ever since I drove a silver car. It just didn't stand out on overcast Seattle days. I have more trouble with hitting the hazard light switch on occasion when I get out of the Loyale.
  14. We got off to a late start, hoping to meet everyone up there. We never found anyone, but we saw Scoobyclimbs going the opposite way once near the bottom of 70. Since I still haven't replaced my stolen Loyale, we took my Dakota. I managed to get stuck once when a guy driving down the east end of 72 in an H3 couldn't be bothered to move over farther than the center of the road. Of course he didn't stop to help either.
  15. Excellent choice! Since I got to see both your EJ20G powered cars at Subiefest, I can imagine seeing that old black hatch with the sound of a serious engine coming from it. ...plus it was Jackie Chan's car. You can't go wrong!
  16. Sure. The attached PDF has the best four runs sorted out and totaled on the right. The first page is sorted by best total of four runs and the second page is sorted by best single run. I was going to attach the Excel spreadsheet too, but it's too big. Subiefest2006RallycrossResults.pdf
  17. I put the results in a little more readable form. Each driver's fastest time is picked out in the right hand column, and the results are sorted by fastest time. Subiefest2006RallycrossResults.pdf
  18. I've got a bunch of pictures from Subiefest, including some great shots of the Rally X. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=934
  19. It was a lot of fun last year. I hope I have a new Subaru in time for this year's run.
  20. Thanks for the info, guys. I would like to get a wagon, but i figured being open to sedans too would give me more flexibility in buying. I do kind of like the old Legacy Sport turbo sedans, and some of them have been showing up on craigslist in my expected price range. What I'd really like is an Impreza wagon.
  21. I'm researching a replacement for my '92 Loyale wagon. One reason I have a wagon is to carry my 10" dobsonian telescope, which is basically a 5 foot long piece of 12" Sonotube with a mirror and a focuser attached. If I get a sedan, either an Impreza or a Legacy, do they have a big enough pass-through from the trunk or a fold-down rear seat for my telescope? A fold-down, split rear seat would be ideal so I could have a passenger in the back and the telescope sticking through from the trunk.
  22. Thanks to everyone for looking out for my car. The Des Moines police recovered it today and I went to look at it at the impound yard. The steering column was ripped open, the stereo was stolen, a couple windows broken, and anything of value was taken (including my 40 GB iPod), but the body seems fine. For some reason, they tried to rip out the headliner. They left the Hellas, pugs, and good tires. I'm not sure about the engine. It looks OK, but I couldn't start it because of the ignigion. This is where it gets weird. It was found in a trailer park just a few blocks from the middle school where I work. When I went to see it in the impound yard, there was a set of keys on the passenger seat, and they're from the school district where I work, including a key for a district vehicle. The person who drives that car lives just a few blocks from me, and my current theory is that the theives must have been prowling the neighborhood and stolen the keys from her car before stealing my car. Now I get to see how much the insurance company offers me. The adjuster is going to go look at it today, and if they decide it's worth salvaging, they'll move it to their own lot to stop the storage fees.
  23. Think I should forward that to my insurance adjuster to show how much my Loyale was worth?
