Clutch glitch in EJ22 swap - HELP!
that sounds like it could be the only thing, is the 2wd shaft a different diameter? I had the John/EJ swap kit, and it fit fine in my 80 gl wagon, and I had a N/A 5spd 4wd D/R tranny in there... time to add 4wd!!

The AA lift.....PICS
those axle angles dont look too bad to me, besides, EA rear axles are dual-DOJ action! more flex ability! my impreza's rears are more angled than that! take a look at my pics and see what i mean (well, when i get a shot of the diff)

EA 81 power
torq sounds about right... the advertised peak HP rating for the old subarus, EA81 and EA82, was usually at like... 5200 rpms.. (like when advertised by subaru) anyone run a dyno on a stock EA81?

trouble deciding... keep which car? brat or imp
well, yeah, its a 450 lb motorcycle.. and its not a small sized one either.. it would have to have a trailer, or truck (i dont even think it will fit in the back of the brat without being on the edge of the tailgate diagonally!

5spd tranny swap BIG PROBLEMS!! revised!
couple things to check.. gear oil? tranny ratio (front diff/rear diff) the same? was the tranny out of a known drivable car? is it a FT 4wd? or part time 4wd? sounds like you have a broken tranny.. if not then something is seriously binding up bad.. or do you have severly broken front axles?

trouble deciding... keep which car? brat or imp
I am preparing to move out into the world on my own.. (well, sorta on my own, but either way, paying rent is soon to come) and I feel like I cant afford to keep both cars and my motorcycle.. so I am faced with a decision.... keep one car and the bike... but wich car? keep the brat? its cute, its a brat, its origional, its nice.. and it has the truck functions (makes moving easy, and transporting things like the bike..) but.. its a 2 seater, and the radio is still the orig. tape/am/fm by subaur.. not that bumpin, like the impreza has... I could sell the brat and keep the $ in the bank to help me move, but i could do the same with the imp... the other thing that I am not too fond of, the brat is carbed.. the imp is a very nice EJ18... if i keep the impreza, i will miss the brattyness of the brat, but I will have a wagon, an offroader, but slightly beat up and more common to see.. which also makes finding parts easier/cheaper.. but I could always get another imp later or better.. but resale in current shape compared to the brat, is there interest in buying a pimped out lifted impreza over the brat? I really wouldnt mind keeping either car or both.... but one really needs to go to help me keep my finances manageable (I cant really afford, or dont want to afford putting both on insurance at the same time either) any ideas on what would be most practical to keep as a one-car driver? and if it matters, the impreza does not have AC, and the brat does.. and I will be living in MN or WI soon.. and possibilites of visiting grandmother in AZ too... any interest in one of these wonderful machines? I may just drag them with me till i can figure it out later! I can use the brat as a trailer behind the impreza right?

oe part number help
there is probably only 3 left in the whole country, as I ordered 2 of the 5 that were there about a month ago... and just to verify, the PN on the package is 791047190 (this is the trim assembly, which is the chrome trim, screws and plastic retainers for the screws all in one bag!) good luck! and if your parts dept at subaru cant find it in the subaru inventory, its under 1800/1600 (83-84)----> body parts ---> rear gate (MPV) I think thats what its under..

traveling across the I-90/I-94 to MN- back home, pics added!
wooohoo! made it home alive!!! the impreza is getting better gas milage now too! but the check engine/idle issue is not better... hmmmm :-\ calculated milage on most of the tanks coming back- 28 to 31mpg!! that includes the 85 octane gas in MT, with a constant speed of 65-75mph one bird bounced off the wagon @75mph, little tiny thing- I think it cracked the lense on the already-broken marker light.... and i got a rock chip in my new windshield! (stooopid sand trucks) good thing I had those snow tires on there (thanks Zap) i ran into some nice glare ice early in the morning on my way thru eastern MT.. also at about 70mph! some select pictures from the trip can be see in the gallery http://usmb.net/gallery/album137

Hello AUSTIN...
I'm home now!!!! woooo!! more details after I sleep.. i am tired!!! for now.. impreza got 31mpg tops on most of the trip (when it was not raining, worse gas milage in the mtns, and when it was wet/icey) no problems except the CEL coming on when sitting at idle too long... went away when driving though...

thanks for the help guys, this is my last post till after I get to MN or get home from MN! look for the lifted impreza along I-90/I-94!! what worries me... my check engine light came on today, while driving.. I am having issues with my idle system... code 24 came up I think while I am running on the freeway, I will be adding some fuel additives to clean it out a lil bit... hope it works! but matt gave me his spare! so I am covered there (and I got a portable E-tire pump)

Drain Plug Tool or Just Ratchet?
the special tool of choice by official Subaru mecanics at the dealer, is .... 1/2 drive snap-on breaker bar! (typically the 2 foot long bar) (i prefer craftsmen myself) yes, the 1/2 impact gun works well too.. in tight spaces especially

ea81 roof rack wanted, also y does it deseil
if you have a hitachi carb, check the big hex bolt thingy sticking off the front of the top of the carb (with a black wire coming out of it) it shuts off the fuel/air (?) supply when you turn off the ignition.. if it goes bad, your car will either, not run at all.. (if the wire breaks) or.. it will desiel (if its broke internally) at least thats what I can remember that thingy doing for the engine.. worth a check!

the center muffler thing
if your talking about the one that resides directly under your seat area.. that should be the resonator... you probably could get away with removing it and replacing it with pipe.. check with your local smog/inspection laws before doing it just to be safe.. some areas are anal about removing stupid things like that.. should make it sound "beefier" too without it..

This car is wonderful.
Ratty2Austin replied to M@dM@x's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI take it this is your first subaru, and you had some sort of "impossible to fix" american made car, prior to it? I know the feeling.. i bought a BMW once... it was nice, and fun to drive.. but when I went to go do regular maintenence on it, and fix a few "minor" things.. I ended up trading it UP for a impreza L and I wont go back.. not to mention, every time i work on "another" kind of car.. it just pisses me off and makes me love subarus simplicity more and more! welcome to the USMB!

What MPG do You Get in your 2.2L AWD?
Ratty2Austin replied to 95LEGOBW's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXmy (former) 1980 yellow wagon got a consistant 21mpg with the 2.2 D/R conversion and 27" BFG tires.. when I was traveling to MN from WA non stop.. uphill/downhill..sub-freezing temps, and about 70-90mph constant speed (where applicable :-p ) my 5spd impreza 1.8, recently got about 20-25 mpg mixed... but its a 1.8! my last impreza with the 1.8 and the AWD AT got 31 on the highway??? hmm... i just cleaned my IAC valve, PCV and TB... so we will see this week if it helpes!

hehe sounds like a good plan.. the xt can tow it.. as for saturday, i will probably be out and about, i dont think i can take too long for a meet/greet.. but i could stop by and say hi.. my mission for that day is to look around and get ideas on apartments/shared rent w/roommates/etc and jobs for that area- (planning to move fairly soon if you missed that thread) so if you let me know when/where i could see about stopping in on my way thru!

traveling across the I-90/I-94 to MN- back home, pics added!
i am just curious.. and I know everyone is different when it comes to this.. but what kind of foods/snacks/energy drinks should i have or are good/cheap/effective for long hauls like this? or for that matter, good safe places to stop and take a nap without being bothered by the fuzz? (last time i stopped in MT at a rest stop, they were sitting behind the car and woke me up.. they left very slowly when they saw me move!) I expect to be somewhere in western montana by late night/morning (nap time needed) probably only stopping for about a couple hours.. (like, 2 or 3 hours nap) daylight helps keep me awake luckly and the spare tire thing.. 50 seems too high.. i think i will see about grabbing one from work in the "used wheel and tire pile"

traveling across the I-90/I-94 to MN- back home, pics added!
on wednesday, the 11th.. I depart the Seattle area in route to Minneapolis... planning to arrive either late thursday night (in the midnight hours) or friday morning sometime... so its going to be a long haul in the impreza on my own.. hoping for no issues.. I got the alignment done, oil changed (and the belts and stuff is good too) and I am going to carry tools as always, however, no spare tire.. and only the stock scissor jack and no idea where the crank handle is.. but not expecting any issues.. afterall ... its highway driving all the way! any ideas on the weather conditions thru the mountain areas? i have snow tires on the car, but this trip was origionally planned for the motorcycle, so I am just curious as what to expect... also, if anyone wants to meet up along the way, i could be down for a quick stop at a gas station off the main freeway- come see the impreza! othewise, im off and runnin on wednesday!

Forester transmission problem
Ratty2Austin replied to bobw's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe best fix for this prob.... 5MT conversion! that and only that will be your sure way to keep it from breaking again... the subaru 4eat is garbage.. IMO I would take it to a dealer.. dealer depending of course.. as long as its a subaru-only dealer, they would know for sure whats wrong.. at least from what I have seen.. dealers vrs independant shops.. but that is also my opinion... if your up for the work yourself, you could swap out the tranny with a J/Y tranny (from a low milage wrecked car) it is usually cheaper than the reman route.. good luck with it...

6 cyl BRat
it can be done.. and the turbos could be done too.. you just couldnt mount them in the "normal" locations.. but if you could put them under the motor, or above it.. but yeah.. the EJ22, either single turbo or twin.. would be lots of fun too.. you have a 92 brumby? I have an 87, which was the last year imported to the US for the brats... are the 90's brumbys different much than the older ones? or did they just keep making them the same? (pictures? pictures are cool!)
