Where is all my oil going?
HooptyGL replied to HooptyGL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
is there any particular reason your not changing the oil at a more decent interval? Or, are you trying to see if you can actually make it to your 12000 mi goal? neal -

yeah the smaller jam nut appears to be absent, but its a done deal now i just hope the nut will stay in place without the locker. neal -

i dont see this second nut you speak of, is it located below the one i'm currently adjusting? im just using vice-grips so i cannot tell the mill size. maybe its located in the sleeve that runs along the clutch cable to the nut i was just spinning, thus it being located above the nut that ive been sending left. neal -
Where is all my oil going?
HooptyGL replied to HooptyGL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i love my GL and wouldn't mind the cost to run synth but im pretty sure that the engine will run hotter and would thus cause for my headgaskets to burn out quicker. or does that logic make less sense? neal -

ok im gonna go send that nut to the left so the pedal will engage a bit lower, just one more thing though....is that nut gonna fall off if i send it too far to the left? neal -
What to do with a tourning wagon?
HooptyGL replied to WoodsWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my 94 leg GT had the touring wagon roof w/ rack and i sure did love it. I loved it so much that i even replaced the head gaskets....then it was stolen in denver in january, some meth-head drove it like 6 blocks before totaling it into a lamp post in down town at like 3 am on new years day...but now ive got a GL thats almost a decade older with less miles...and he's in jail! -

HooptyGL replied to HooptyGL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
running conventional 10 weight 30 oil, no sense in switching over to synthetic unless im going to pull the head gaskets. 20 weight 50 motor oil eh? will that effect my mileage? neal -
Ever since i've owned this car i've been having to put like 1/4-1/3 a qt of oil in every 300-350 miles...roughly every time i fill up or check the level....i know im not burning it and i can see no apparent leak coming from the block...could it be going out the tail pipe? Its an ea82 5speed GL wagon. neal

Hey i've never had the reason to adjust the clutch on my '85 GL w/ an ea82 5speed (duh) until now! and i cannot locate my chilton. Anyone out there know where the adjustment screw/nut thingy is?!?!? What will i need to tweek it, and which direction do i send it? As far as i know its the original clutch set up, fly wheel/pressure plate etc.... and i want to keep it that way. neal

Working on washer fluid squiters
HooptyGL replied to HooptyGL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I ended up using canned air to blow down into the openings for the jets (after taking the hoses off) and blew out some crud that was loose in there, too big to come through the pinholes but got pushed up against them when the pump operated, blocking them. Also scrubbed around the pinholes with a toothbrush and cleaned some fuzz off them (maybe mineral deposits from decades of evaporation) that had made them rather smaller. ah yes canned air....but how to i get the the sending side of the jet? -
So I recently put a rear wiper motor into my GL and it works but; only the front passenger side squirter will squirt fluid and that is half the time coming out of one hole if im lucky or else its nothing at all, but the rear fluid squiter or dribbler or whatever it is will not function. ive tried to clean the front squiters many different ways and have made sure that the hoses are good but i dont know where to start with the rear. Anybody out there had much luck with this? I know the hatch has fluid. Neal

i dont remember her name but we floated right past her place she was living in or moving into on the river. cool story about the subsistance fishing village moving on the elders vision of destruction and saving them all! are you still running the smaller rims with that lift? neal

Calling John Bloom (again)
HooptyGL replied to NoahDL88's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i spoke with a friend of mine in lolo mont today who said they were going to roadtrip w/ jon to az to pick up that svx last weekend he ended up flaking on jon and, apparently jon went this weekend to get it. -
well to sound a lot like a free loading pachouli wearing freak driving in the creek bed sounds about as smart as dipping your undercarrige in a really big bucket/kiddie pool and dumping all that effluent into the riparian area. my tips would be quit your whining; your running the largest non suv stock subaru struts currently on the market and wait until the river is running real high like, then get into the forester get it into the creek and drive it in reverse real fast like up stream. dang that shure would be fun:dead:

uh in the all the miles ive spent touring across the country, up and down I-5, I-95, and the cali 395 ive seen more FORDS broke down on the side of the road than any other car ever. if your looking for a grocery-getter that sips on the gas i would go with a chevy malibu, they make a hatch too called the malibu maxx.

the 32/36 carter weber will improve all around performance with better high end accelerating and will give you better highway mileage in my opinion.

hey karinvail thanks for the tip on the rally rims in mt vernon my hoopty is running a LOT smoother now neal

im still searching for any part #'s for the front and rear struts for an 85 GL DR wagon. any beta would be much appreciated. neal

i just had all the pipes replaced (without the cats) on my 85 gl wagon. took it for a run on the highway down to phoenix and back to prescott which is about a 200 mile drive roundtrip and ive got a little under a half tank left. it looks as though its getting around 29 or 30 mpg with the rocket box on top.

i saw a lifted soob with what looked like 13-15 in rims in the chilkat river guides parking lot. this was back in june. maybe it was yours. my class took a float down the river and we had some cute girl paddling the boat. she was a riot though talking about these whale's that get off the cruise ships that she needs to keep from getting wet. i just put the thule feet onto my gutters and had to move them once and left some real bad marks above the gutters, im kicking myself in the rump roast over that one. but now the box will stay on without having to tie it down with shoelaces and i can get the hatch to open up all the way.

yeah my only reservation is the rack footing possibly damaging the roof. hows the weather up in haines? i was just up there in june and july as a part of a college class and it is freaking beautifal. i was thinking about doing my senior project up there doing some salmon studies on the chilkat. neal
